We're at the hospital now and we can't wait to meet our little one. Mom's doing great after they placed the epidural. Excited to join the Dad crew with you all. :)
My dream is to own my own business (just kidding--own several businesses), but I'm currently experiencing financial hardship. After frantically looking for work for over a year with a network that let me down, I finally managed to find part-time work at a local nonprofit....
I'm not one for groups as an introvert, but I listen to the Recovery Elevator podcast for the connection piece. My dog is my best buddy, and he always just listens and lets me rubber duck my problems.
Now that the weather doesn't suck, I'm going for a run when I get the "this calls for a drink" kinda frustration. Yard work is becoming my new meditation.
Play the tape forward is a classic goto. The tried and true, sleep it off and try again tomorrow hasn't failed me yet.
... Oh and I use the Habits app with a "IWNDWYT" widget to count my days. I tick it off in the morning and the mental hurdle to uncheck the box and break my streak helps against even having one drink.
My preferred way to browse here is using All and blocking communities I don't want to see. That way I get exposed to new things I wouldn't seek out on my own (for example: British archaeology)...
My blocked community list got significantly shorter when they introduced instance blocking. Got pretty tired of playing furry porn community whackamole.
I am a nobody who was stolen from there parents. I've spent my life in constant pain and have always been abused. In many ways I Have struggled to stay strong in life and have grown so wise in doing so. Being raised in a place of faith, and under the age of 7 as a young child I questioned such intentions upon me and already...
One strategy that worked with my spouse since it was also new for them is to temporarily shift into reverse before shifting into park. The back up camera let's them visually confirm that they have made it far enough into the garage. You can even place tape down for them to indicate off of.
I back my vehicle into parking spaces almost exclusively so it was natural for me, but it did take them some getting used to. Now we have no issues and they're confident each time.
Jokes about bomb threats aren't exactly cool even if you're "thick skinned" and "humor filled". That's not a trigger warning thing, it's tactless to joke about harming people when acts of terror are becoming a common occurrence.
I just finished installing an air horn on my truck. Certainly louder which was my goal, but it's higher pitched than I was expecting. Not sure how I feel about it yet. Still have the OEM horn to replace if it's annoying.
Researching around this cause I thought it was interesting, certainly not an expert. Apparently your case is considered an "accidental American" and you can probably search for others in your scenario. The IRS has a tax treaty with Germany that should be able to help you reduce (or maybe eliminate) your tax burden.
Traveling this week and we got booked at a pretty nice hotel. They had a happy hour cocktail mixer thing with "spiked" and "non-spiked" options. The drink was a Matcha Mule that they would typically serve with whiskey. Not sure if that would have made it better, but it certainly wasn't awesome as they served it NA. I'll stick to Arnold Palmers. IWNDWYT!
I woke up at 2a with nightmares about work then the anxiety started. I'm currently laying in bed not able to go back to sleep but not ready to commit to starting my day this early.
Work has been emotionally and mentally draining this week, and my mental health group was cancelled last week. I'm running on fumes, but IWNDWYT.
My undergraduate education was absolutely invaluable to setting me up on the path I'm on today. In part because of the academics, but also because of the opportunities I was afforded through internships and organizations which have morphed into a career. My best friends to this day came from those experiences. It gave me an opportunity to learn about myself, make some mistakes that thankfully didn't set me back too far, and the flexibility to give me room to grow into who I am today.
My graduate education on the other hand was simply a checkbox for job recruiters. I did the bare minimum to get the grades I needed, but my heart wasn't in it. I figure the hiring manager will see the benefits of my on the job training, and HR will use my degree in their matrix to decide what salary I'm worth.
Time units being base 12, 24, 60 are fairly convenient in that you can divide them evenly in many ways. I find this highly advantageous, turns out lots of folks did too and that's why we use it today.
I used to get confused doing arithmetic between AM/PM until I switched my life over to a 24 hour clock. Also why folks who do time math often like in hospitals or military use that system. It's comes down to convenience.
As a recovery facilitator for a decade, hopefully you would have developed some skills in empathy. Everyone is approaching their sobriety journey from a different place, and it's reasonable to assume that their world view and lived environment is foundational to their story.
It's unfortunate that you are feeling personally attacked by the recovery community striving to be inclusive of all who struggle in different ways than you do. What happened to "look for the similarities, not the differences"?
It's not lost on us that saw you share your vitriol this morning, have it summarily rejected by reasonable minds, then go shop around for affirmation in different circles. If this is your idea of creating a safe space recovery, maybe you should reconsider your role. I'm sure there's a place for you somewhere, but I imagine your politics are blinding your ability to help others progress on their journey. You're not the leader you think you are.
@Thekingoflorda, we understand this is a volunteer effort, but as the community lead, would you be able to shed some light into the status of the upgrade? I don't think we are asking or pressuring for the upgrade to happen ASAP, just some transparency would be nice. We're two weeks past the proposed update, and almost a month beyond the last communication on the topic. Appreciate what you all do to provide the community for us, we ask because we care.
The special was actually really good in my opinion. I personally like the idea of preserving cultural icons a la the talking heads in Futurama via AI. I do think the estate should get royalty rights like they would with deceased artists, but why not embrace this medium of immortality?
Did you pot directly into planting soil bags? That seems pretty a smart and efficient idea. How do you deal with drainage, just poke holes in the bottoms?
That's an awesome run down. Thanks! In the past I've seeded into jiffy pods, moved to solo cups, then into their cloth grow bags. About to start for this season and always looking for new ideas.

I picked up The Daily Stoic to start incorporating stoicism into my life. 1 Jan was about focusing on what you are able to control and the Serenity Prayer. Fitting for this community.
Thanks for posting. I realized I do need to vent to folks who maybe could relate or at least understand.
We went to the house of some acquaintances for NYE last night. Got offered bourbon, sounded great, but no water is fine. He poured himself a refill of his wine and offered me some. Nah, I’m good with water. He had one more glass for what I assume was the rest of the bottle, then switched to Pepsi until they popped champagne for the ball drop. They were nice enough to pour me a glass of sparkling grape juice alongside their 4 year old. Cool. I’m “participating.” Same feeling I had growing up, sorta like being at the kids table again.
All-in-all, they were respectful of my choices, not pushy just hospitable. But it was frustrating for me knowing how I used to celebrate what is clearly a drinking holiday, right? How can someone have just a bottle of wine? How do you switch to soda after happy hour already started, the drinking holiday is over when you stop drinking, right? I was upset cause I was projecting how I would have handled the situation, but clearly they were fine. Which meant that I was the one with the problem. Got it, already knew that, moving on.
Overall though, we had a nice night socializing with some nice friends. We drove home without concerns of DUIs or putting anyone at risk. We woke up without hangovers. I’m ready to tackle my New Year clear headed. I played the tape forward successfully and for that I’m grateful. I did want to recognize the stages of grief I experienced though. I’m starting 2024 with 489 days of sobriety, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything. IWNDWYT.
I’m in! I always enjoy the clarity that sobriety allows me to have when reevaluating my life’s journey in the New Year. I’ll acknowledge that you still get the uncomfortable bits of facing life’s problems head on, but I’ve found it gets easier every year and that the spice of life is found in the journey. IWNDWYT and for Dry January!
