Devout Christian Mike Johnson shows up to hush money trial to defend a guy accused of cheating on his wife with a porn star ( www.vanityfair.com )

House Speaker Mike Johnson describes himself as a Christian before anything else. He has said his “faith informs everything I do.” He has told people curious about his views to “pick up a Bible.” His wife reportedly runs a counseling service whose operating agreement, which he himself notarized, states, “We...

Brexit has left the building. :(

That aside, i dont agree and this way lies stagnation.

The Russian Government has nothing in common with the goals of climate mitigation nor does the US government for that matter. The US and Russian government's for example are well aligned in the biospheres destruction.

If you're not closing airports, banning cars, rebuilding roads and car parks with cycling and small medium density well insulated with and shrubs and trees around s, solar on the roof, closing roads and buildong electrified trains, if you're not banning meat eating pet ownership, cruise ships, personal yachts, jet skis, power boats, banning advertising then you're going the wrong way.

All we get fron cooperation is slight incrementism that's then argued away.

My proof ? We're not even taking baby steps in the rihht dirction, if we were it would have at least paused CO2 emissions with a slight decline but April saw the single largest increase in CO2ppm ever recorded and people are jetting around the world to attend a Taylor Swift concert in response.

While there is more then a grain of truth to this, still seems to be time for distracted voters to watch Netflix, goto concerts, watch movies, goto sporting events. You're not going to get out from under any of this by substituting screeching about the need to pay bills, for activism.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bread_and_circuses

Juvenal originally used it to decry the "selfishness" of common people and their neglect of wider concerns. The phrase implies a population's erosion or ignorance of civic duty as a priority

You can be distracted and not Vote GOP for example.

29" ebike. Giant or Merida, they are like Toyota, mostly reliable, well priced, most boring but normally well made. I have a Giant.. The more you pay normally the better you get with diminishing returns though. Maybe Trek as well ?

Depending on the front fork it will have a QR lever or a thru Axel, either way you'll be able to take the front off easily to load it into a car. Not so the back wheel albeit it can be done if you have to. Ebikes are heavy, onto the roof is probably out.

I remember reading once an interview with an Australian female MTB racer who used to race road and swapped to MTB, she said she tought it would be like riding a road bike on dirt trails and as she said, it's NOTHING like that.

If you take to it you'll be more in tune with a better bike to suit your needs in a couple more years. If you buy something too cheap you WILL be disappointed as it will let you down. Off road is much harder on the bike.

Bikes are stupidly priced.

Good luck and have fun

They don't care. They are lazy cowards who will give up everyone's rights for a false sense of safety.

Thats how it is for most of humanity, from Hitler, through Putin, to Trump, same playbook to appeal to the 80%

“Susan Sontag was asked what she had learned from the Holocaust, and she said that 10% of any population is cruel, no matter what, and that 10% is merciful, no matter what, and that the remaining 80% could be moved in either direction” —Kurt Vonnegut

I don't believe you. What you're describing in regards the weather is most of Australia and it's even more car dependent then the US. If you were there, you'd drive.

It's snow bound northern Euro countries that are way more advanced in being car free then sunny warm countries. Have you seen Manila? Jakarta ?

hanrahan ,
@hanrahan@slrpnk.net avatar

Butt hurt much?

Why didnt they barricade the car lane off and use that to install the bike barrier lane protectors from ? Use stop / go personell so cars can use the other lane.

They've blocked the entire cycle lane with what looks like a compressor up ahead as well (presumably to supply a pneumatic drill for the bolts)

Or here's an idea, install concrete barricades from the back of a truck with a crane that actually project cyclists from being murdered.

What are the most private social media platforms?

I've been feeling uneasy about the privacy implications of using Lemmy and similar platforms. The ability for anyone to view your entire posting history feels to me like publicly sharing my browser history. In contrast, most other social media platforms allow you to limit your feed visibility to just friends or followers....

A perfectly private social media service could be constructed but it likely won't because there is no profit motive.

And here it is, that thing you said most likely won't be..

https://gadgeteer.co.za/gotosocial-is-a-new-activitypub-social-network-server-for-the-fediverse/

Even if it were, how many people would truly use it.

To be social, 3 people, maybe 5 is all you'd need.

As to proft motive, maybe you're not aware of FOSS?

The problem is human, it's us and we're not taking anything seriously. How much more ? April was the single largest increase in monthly ppm ever recorded

The climates not the problem, we have any number of solutions. Lots of really easy stuff we're not doing, like not flying and cycling and not driving cars, not replacing meat eating pets when they pass. Alll too inconvenient ? Yes ? Well that just makes my point. We assume our entitlment can continue with a few tweaks, well, we can fool ourselves and each other but nature cannot be fooled.

Ask a behavioral expert not a climate scientiest. Can't even get people to stop flying to a Taylor Swift concert or a football match what hope ?

Fuck hope, Plan for the worst.

Not having outdoor lighting, seriously. I've been workibg on using less for years, trying to drill down between needs and wants.

We can't buy our way out of this using more resources, the only thing truly renewable is organic.

We don't build homes to house people either. Unlike say these guys

hanrahan ,

We coukd start by not replacing meat eating pet's when they pass, this fetisihization of pets is bizzare. The US uses more meat for pet dogs then all of the meat conumed in Germany as one example.

That aside, we could start with banning advertising, private jets, cruise ships, jet skis, flying, motocross bikes, private cars etc why ? Some poor dude being told to stop eating a burger isn't going to take anyone seriously if Gate's etal are still flying around in a private jet and folks are jetting around the world to see a Taylor Swift concert.

I quit at 35 and am now 58. My only regret was being too afraid to do it earlier.

How ? I long ago was able to to differentiate needs from wants.

I do own my own small house. Each year I have excess funds, some is rolled over and reinvested, some is donated to charity, because the small investments I do have earn way more then my needs.

I'd consider euthanasia if I had to return to work because of some unforseen reason, after deaades of freedom Arbeit macht frei is prison.
