What are the top 3 favourite c-dramas that you watched this year? Let's go

My favourites are Meet Yourself 去有风的地方,There Will Be Ample Time 故乡,别来无恙, and Once Upon a Time in Lingjian Mountain 从前有座灵剑山 (this is an old one but didn't get to it until now).

I need to go and see what historical/wuxia/xianxia dramas i missed from this year

  • Lighter & Princess

Right when Park Seo-jun's character said he was screwed, and then smiled? It made me think of Byun Yohan in Mr. Sunshine as Kim Hui-seong. That rich, handsome, charming, smarmy capable guy.

Motorcycle mechanic Han Sohee? Yes, please!

Except, I am a person who always notices hands. Finger shapes, etc. And Han Sohee has unique paddle-shaped thumbs. (At least in "Nevertheless.") The hands assembling the motorcycle and pouring the petrol do not.

The front desk guy at the pawn shop has a very eye-catching knit vest!

Is the water that those two imprisoned women drinking contaminated with that tiny monster tadpole? Blech.

I love this watching the cherry blossoms slowly bloom as an indicator of time passing.

Wi Ha-Jun playing the piano! All kinds of eye candy in here.

So, if Myeong-ja is pregnant and drinks the monster juice, does her fetus become a monster?

Oh, it looks like the human is just for hatching the beast.

jillithd OP ,
@jillithd@tech.lgbt avatar

As an American, I find parallels between US media often showing the monstrous things German Nazis did and Korean media showing the monstrous things empire-expanding Japan did. Is there a culture whose media often shows the monstrous things the US has done? Where the US is the regular bogeyman?

(Our continued presence as a military superpower in the world probably makes this rare. At least in mainstream media.)

(I appreciated the unflattering image - although not monstrous - of the US military in Korean media like "Mr. Sunshine" and "Swing Kids." The racism is there. The self-serving agendas. I also appreciate the low-key snark in many Korean shows about how much better Korean food is over western food.)

The Moon (2023) ★★★★★★★★★★

This is the best "Moon" to date. The industry once again has proven that they can produce top notch productions. They never cease to amaze me on how they can keep the human aspect strong in their stories without it turning into a regular drama.

I highly recommend this!

You wouldn't even think it was an Asian production. They surpassed here, hands down.

Thank you for providing both a subtitled and dubbed versions. I enjoyed watching both versions. A great 2023 holiday gift for your subscribers.

And congratulations to the production team for giving the world a great film.

Thanks to folks on here who recommended the "W". The promo image never grabbed me, so I don't know that I would have picked it myself.

It was so good!

About a woman whose father is the author of a series of comic books, "W," and how suddenly the barrier between the real world and the comic's world gets fuzzy. Somehow, she and the comic book hero fall in love?

It could have been cheesed up to the gills, but it took the storyline seriously, and in thoughtful ways I did not expect. The ethics behind character creation and plot devices?

Action, romance, sci-fi, and Lee Si-Eon being an over-the-top hubae.

(It did bother me that he kept calling the FL "noona" when, in real life, he's 5 years older than her.)

Having just finished "Moving," which also stars Han Hyo-joo, AND she starred in the excellent "Happiness," I have to add her to my list of favorite actors!

TW for suicidal topics.

I am surprised that I haven't seen any of Namkoong Min's work before. I have to say, after not-quite two episodes, I really love him? No wonder @bougiewonderland is such a big fan of his.

I loved the female lead in as Chu Min-ha (Chu Chu!) but I'm not quite sold on her yet in this role. As terrible as it sounds, I think she's too old (age 33 in real life) to be the unmarried dream girl of all those rich young men. The show does kinda comment on the age thing as the one kisaeng is 16, and the male lead says she is much too young.

(33 is not too old for our 45yo male lead, however.)

Day 1 of where we recommend one thing every day in December (thanks @Forestofglory for the idea!):

My favorite graphic novel series - officially classified as "children's literature" - would be the Walker Bean series by Aaron Renier. Pirates, fantasy, friends, time travel, different cultures, magic, gold, adventures, sea monsters, inventions... Both my kid and myself LOVED these stories.

Both "The Unsinkable Walker Bean" and its sequel "The Unsinkable Walker Bean and the Knights of the Waxing Moon" received a star from Kirkus Reviews.

Legends of Atlantis, merwitches and pirates abound in this stunningly swashbuckling graphic novel.
https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/aaron-renier/unsinkable-walker-bean/

...after a fantastic battle at sea, bespectacled Walker Bean and his friends are marooned on a mysterious and seemingly deserted island but soon surmise they might not be alone.

Day 2 of and I want to recommend my favorite graphic novel series for young kids: CatStronauts!

Drawn by Minneapolis artist Drew Brockington, four cats become astronauts. Space race against Cosmo Cats! Science-adjacent shenanigans! Robots! Snacks!

...the fearless commander Major Meowser, brave-but-hungry pilot Waffles, genius technician and inventor Blanket, and quick thinking science officer Pom Pom...

Silly, fun, scientifically inaccurate yet accurate at the same time... these have been a favorite in our house.

Day 3 of is specific. My favorite calendar!

Minnesota Weatherguide Environment Calendar and Almanac from https://freshwater.org/weatherguide/

The second image is from my actual calendar, showing a lot of the neat historical, meteorological, astronomical factoids we see on each day and week. Daylight hours, astronomical events, average and record weather stats for cities across the state...

I have been buying these calendars for years. When my elderly father-in-law was still alive, he LOVED having data to back up his weather memories, and he was so happy to get a new calendar as a gift each year. (At 90-something, he really didn't want or need much else as gifts.)

Plus gorgeous photos and a page of month-specific flora and fauna facts between each month.

Photo of a chunk of days in a wall calendar. Images of the Minnesota state shape showing a gradient for sunrise and sunset times on the 20th. Icons for moon phases. Record and normal weather data for International Falls, Duluth, Rochester and St. Cloud across weeks. Ojibwe and Lakota names for the full moon on the 26th. Meteor shower on the 13th.

Day 4 of is another favorite comic series for middle grade readers (and adults):

The Creepy Casefiles of Margo Maloo by Drew Weing

Charles Thompson moves to Echo City, only to find monsters EVERYWHERE. Fortunately for him, he gets in touch with Margo Maloo, Monster Mediator, and discovers a new way to see the city's co-inhabitants.

I think this series does a good job of poking at humans' first instinct to "other" those who seem different from us. How do we empathize with them? How do we see how many ways they are similar to us (both in good and bad ways)? How do we figure out how to live together, especially in situations where they were here first?

Bonus: I was a Patreon supporter for the author, so one of the streets in the city road map in the first book is named after me. 😁

https://www.drewweing.com/books/

(You can read the whole first chapter online here: https://www.drewweing.com/comic/chapter-1-city-of-monsters/ )

Book "The Creepy Case Files of Margo Maloo - The Monster Mall" by Drew Weing. Two kids are on an escalator in a dark shopping mall. All kinds of monster faces peer from both floors of the mall at them.
Book "The Creepy Case Files of Margo Maloo - The Tangled Web" by Drew Weing. Far down in a dark cave, two kids are climbing down cobweb covered stairs. Many eyes of spiders peer at them from behind stalagmites.

Day 5 of is this great graphic novel trilogy:

The Nameless City series by Faith Erin Hicks

(Can you tell I was on a big middle grade graphic novel kick for a while?)

The Nameless City, by Faith Erin Hicks, takes place in a frequently invaded city with an ever-changing name. The story focuses on Rat who, like most natives, tries to avoid getting caught up in the unending wars and insists that those who try to name the city are forever outsiders. But when a threat to not only to the latest occupying nation, Dao, but also the entire city appears, she must learn to work with Kaidu, a Dao member, to save the city they love so much.

https://us.macmillan.com/series/thenamelesscity

If you are a fan of the "Avatar: The Last Airbender" cartoon series, I think you will also like this comic series. Faith has even worked on official Avatar comics!

Illustrated cover of the book "The Stone Heart" by Faith Erin Hicks. Two worried teens stand in front of a tall stone tower in the middle of an ancient city. The whole cover glows in a flame-orange glow, and there are villains behind them.
Illustrated cover of the book "The Divided Earth" by Faith Erin Hicks. Two teens stand back to back, one clutching a book to his chest. They are surrounded by smoke as houses go up in flames.

Day 6 of is my favorite NON graphic young adult novel:

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

"A deliciously warm-hearted nerd power ballad, destined for greatness.” - New York Journal of Books

The edition I have is even illustrated by ND Stephenson of Nimona and She-Ra fame!

I love this story because it talks about the first year Cath is in university, meeting her new roommate, her roommate's best friend who is a bit weird, and dealing with her twin sister and family. Multiple people in the story are neurodivergent or have some kind of learning disability or mental health issue, but each is treated like a whole, loveable person. It also has one of the healthiest first-love stories I've ever read.

Plus, she writes fanfic!

Day 7 of is my favorite carbonated mineral water.

S.PELLEGRINO ESSENZA, specifically the Dark Morello Cherry & Pomegranate flavor.

I have tried all of these (except maybe the grapefruit), and the only one I don't like is the lemon.

I initially found them at Walgreens (in the US) or also in cases of 24 (8 of 3 different flavors) at Costco.

Other carbonated water offerings often give me heartburn, but not these.

Day 8 of is my favorite N95 mask to wear when traveling all day.

Honeywell N95 Flatfold Disposable Respirators

I love these because they are comfortable to wear for long periods. They have two head straps instead of ear straps (less pain on my ears over long wear). They have a bendable foam cushioned nose piece to help conform to your face better and comfortable! They last more than one wearing and can fit many sized faces.

I wear them when traveling on planes and trains. I've worn them to concerts (although I prefer more fun prints on some KN94s). I am wearing them right now in my own house to keep my family members safe from my current illness - so that means all day and night, and still comfortable.

Honeywell is a well-known brand in the US for industrial supplies, so I know they are masks I can trust, even when ordering them over the internet.

Today, while digging through availability across streaming platforms, I found it on TWO: both Tubi and Amazon!

My favorite available on + (I am in the US, so your regional availability may differ) would be "Soundtrack #1" , starring Park Hyung-sik and Han Sohee.

✅️ This is a short series, beautifully shot, with good music, a sweet story, and A-list actors.

🦸‍♂️ is a modern story about kids (and their parents) who have extraordinary super powers, but try to hide them. If you enjoyed the US TV series "Heroes," this has a similar feel.

✅️ High production, A-list actors, deeply engaging story, international history.

🗺 is based on novels, about generations in a family, starting in Korea, moving to Japan, and then to the USA. Spanning from ~1900 to 1990, the world keeps changing, including the ways to survive in it, from a rural farm to an international conglomerate's board room.

🔃 Different languages are key here, and AppleTV does a great job indicating when folks are speaking Korean, Japanese, or English - all key to the story.

So, the exact words out of my mouth as the ending credits started: "what the fuck was that."

The movie seemed like a 30 1-hour episode series condensed into 100 minutes. It had so many expedited plot branches. I want to know more about Han Tai's older brother!

Was the story good? No.
Did the plot make sense? No.
But the ML and FL had good chemistry, right? No.
