It really is hard to put Republican assholery on a scale of "worst in our lifetime".

GWB got us in multiple multiple decade long wars.

Mitt Romney or Dick Cheney might have turned the great recession into another great depression.

Trump nearly got us into another full blown recession, got rid of Roe V Wade, tried to overturn Democracy, and nearly got us into a war with Iran.

Trump this time around will try to overturn Democracy again, might bring back the full blown recession we almost had, will let Russia steamroll Ukraine, will support Israel harder than any US president, etc. etc.

popcap200 ,

How'd they find out the north Korea one?

popcap200 ,

Majora's mask graphic novel seems to be coming along well!

US finds five Israeli military units guilty of 'gross human rights violations' ( www.middleeasteye.net )

"After a careful process, we found five Israeli units responsible for individual incidents of gross violations of human rights. All of these were incidents much before October 7th and none took place in Gaza," State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said Monday....

popcap200 ,

For some more context, the article says four of the five units have remedied their issues, and the State Department is working with the Israeli government to remedy the issue with the fifth unit. I'm not sure what they mean by "remedy", but I'm assuming they mean punishing the individuals responsible or something.

popcap200 ,

Yeah, it's bonkers it's been out for months and months and the Spear is still completely broken.

popcap200 ,

I'm shocked. Every time I use it, I can't get a lock on anything. When I manage to, it works great, but it's not worth it for me over the quasar.

popcap200 ,

Yeah, in one game I was having issues locking at a big distance. Maybe the hitboxes of the hills the hulk was running across were being funky, so it was thinking it was out of sight. Idk.

popcap200 ,

They also cited Nicaragua's recent push towards authoritarianism modeled after Putin's regime, and how Russia can use this case as a propaganda talking point point to defend their genocide in Ukraine.

Not mentioned in the article was Nicaragua's support of Putin's invasion of Ukraine, as well as Russia's military and intelligence support of Nicaragua, which is also relevant information imo.

To me, it's pretty clear that it would be to Ortega's political advantage to continue to do as Putin asks. Even if Russia didn't ask Ortega to file, it's pretty obvious a dictator like him doesn't care about Palestinians and is filing in bad faith to please Putin.

popcap200 ,

Pelosi caveated this statement saying that most of them are probably organic and sincere, but the pro Palestine movement aligns with the goals of Russia 🤷‍♂️, which doesn't make the pro Palestine movement wrong.

It's pretty well documented that Russia attempted to spur conflict within the US by trying to instigate the BLM movement. The BLM movement may overall be a good thing, but that doesn't mean we should be happy that antagonistic foreign governments are trying to add to them.

Further, look at all the tankie influencers online who suddenly are super pro Palestine, such as Jackson Hinckle, even though they have no issue with governments putting down protest in their preferred countries like China.

popcap200 ,

Weren't they literally from Codepink? Like 25% of their funding comes from the Shanghai based billionaire husband of a cofounder. Since they got married, Codepink changed their opinions SHARPLY on China. It seems like a good excuse for shouting "go back to China".

popcap200 ,

This looks like the cutscene for the boss fight in a game where you've spent the whole time fighting bugs.

popcap200 ,

I can't think of any, but I can think of a ton in the reverse direction lol. How I Met Your Mother, Game of Thrones, etc.

popcap200 ,

That's fair! I can think of shows where the beginning was meh, and they got better like Parks and Rec IMO, but I don't remember the ending being particularly amazing compared to the rest.

popcap200 ,

I'm hoping it's fine given how many supplies have been coming from European partners as of late.

popcap200 ,

Is this something people actually do? I know here in the states we have the cannonball run. I doubt people actually drive the whole route very often.

popcap200 ,

Yeah, that makes sense to me!

popcap200 ,

Oh I was genuinely curious if people drive across Europe like this often.

popcap200 ,

Based on what happened to Ukraine, I don't blame any nation for running to NATO as fast as they can.

popcap200 ,

Venezuela almost invaded Guyana. If Guyana was a NATO member it never would have been considered.

popcap200 ,

Didn't happen yet. Venezuela is still escalating tensions with force buildups on the border and passing laws claiming the territory, even though they agreed to go through the ICJ to settle the dispute.

popcap200 ,

I lost all respect for Ramsey when I came across a video of him saying he wouldn't take a 0% interest million dollar loan. His opinions on finance are outrageous and dumb.

popcap200 ,

They used to for cars, but obviously that's a depreciating asset or w/e so it's not really the same thing.

popcap200 ,

I'm sorry Frodo. The government has put too many regulations on eagle riding for it to be cost effective. Also, protestors in Gondor have concerns about flying eagles ruining the views from their huts' backyards. You can't simply fly the ring to Mordor.

popcap200 ,

Honestly, I'm so confused why radical leftists are so pro Russia. It's not like they're communist anymore. In fact, they're an authoritarian kleptocracy, which sounds like the type of government the folks on hexbear and lemmygrad would like the least.

Biden vows to reopen Baltimore port, rebuild collapsed Key Bridge ( thehill.com )

President Biden vowed Tuesday to rebuild Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge after it collapsed into the water when a cargo ship rammed into it, echoing what some Maryland officials said earlier but adding that he expects the federal government to foot the bill....

popcap200 ,

Someone doesn't remember the 9/11 responder funding, hurricane funding, the rhetoric around COVID funding, etc. etc.

popcap200 ,

He's on lemmy. He def means "non-tankies"

popcap200 ,

😂 okay buddy.

popcap200 ,

Like the other guy said, authoritarian communists.

Or authoritarian communists pretending not to be. The type of people to come out and defend everything China and Russia do while decrying "the west" at every opportunity. Constantly at it with "what aboutisms" and other bad faith arguments. People who claim we should vote third party/not vote while pretending they want to make the US better through these actions, when really they just want the US to fail. Jackson Hinkle types or Infra Haz types.

If I recall correctly, tankies are named because tanks were used to put down protests in Czechoslovakia under the USSR and tankies will defend it.

popcap200 ,

Oh yeah, I definitely thought you were the other guy when I was responding, who definitely seems like a tankie.

how can something be so courageous and yet so true ( slrpnk.net )

Edit: Jesus Christ, people. If you buy a $150 Thinkpad made by slave labor instead of a $1,200 MacBook made by slave labor, you're still supporting a capitalist economy based on slave labor. We all do. We have no choice. The number of smug liberals in the comments saying "well I buy a cheap used laptop" or "well I buy coffee...

popcap200 ,

Also, having seen new macs, if I wasn't into gaming the m chip macs seem better for the price than anything else on the market. 🤷‍♂️

popcap200 ,

Really? I thought I saw multiple benchmarks with the m-chips blowing all the other Intel and AMD chips out of the water.

popcap200 ,

Ah okay! Thank you for providing sources. It still seems like a competitive chip, but I see I was wrong about it being outright better.

I think the first two comparisons are a little unfair (unless I'm mistaken) since those are both desktop spec chips and apple doesn't realllyyy do desktops anymore.

popcap200 ,

Ohhh I missed the "H" when I read that. My bad.

Edit: Yeah, I saw the Mac Pro release, but didn't hear much after that. It seemed like it would end up being really niche. I didn't realize they had made a desktop specific m3 chip for it. This is what I get for not following tech recently haha.

I would imagine with apple's poor cooling, many of the Intel and AMD chips would perform worse in the real world in one of their laptops given the difference in power usage. That's just a theory though given their past thermal issues.

US sues Apple for illegal monopoly over smartphones ( www.theverge.com )

The US Department of Justice and 16 state and district attorneys general accused Apple of operating an illegal monopoly in the smartphone market in a new antitrust lawsuit. The DOJ and states are accusing Apple of driving up prices for consumers and developers at the expense of making users more reliant on its iPhones.

popcap200 ,

The EU said so, and the US did successfully sue valve for monopoly practices.

popcap200 ,

Oh lol my b. I saw the ads for being eligible for compensation and thought they lost.

The Secret behind Metformin’s weightloss-effect ( scitechdaily.com )

Metformin is a widely prescribed anti-diabetic medicine that also reduces body weight. There is ongoing debate about the mechanisms that mediate metformin’s effects on energy balance. This study shows that metformin induces the formation of hunger-reducing metabolite N-lactoyl-phenylalanine (Lac-Phe), a byproduct of muscle...

popcap200 ,

I'm surprised muscle fatigue reduces hunger. I would have thought the body would want to make up the caloric deficit.

popcap200 ,

I don't know why people are surprised. Expecting Nissan to make any good car anytime in the last like 20 years is a lot of them.

popcap200 ,

I googled it. They have energy stored from when they were caterpillars.

popcap200 ,

At least the US pier headed for Gaza is making progress.

popcap200 ,

I think the concern is the stack up you get in latency between the controller, the computer, and the monitor.

popcap200 ,

You should be able to check the maintenance schedule to see if there's anything electric related, but a normal mechanic should be fine.

popcap200 ,

I mean I'd rather vote for the guy who didn't get rid of Roe v Wade, but that's just me.

popcap200 ,

Yeah! I love Biden. Between the student debt changes, build back better plan, insulin price changes for Medicare patients, helping Ukraine, etc. etc. all with only a 1 seat majority in the Senate, a conservative court that trump filled, and a now conservative house.

As for your other question, a Republic is still a form of Democracy. You have the ability to vote for whoever you want.

popcap200 ,

Whoever you wanna write in? Unfortunately for your personal beliefs, most Americans are batshit conservatives or moderate to progressive liberals, therefore usually a batshit Republican, and a moderate dem win the primaries, which frequently have more populist candidates as an option. Sanders was in the 2020 primary. I voted for him. He didn't win, so I voted for Biden in the general.

Maybe I'm wrong, but It feels like you'd have the same complaints you have under this system that you'd have under any democratic system of government.

popcap200 ,

A third party vote is still supporting Trump if you have a left mindset (and vice versa for conservatives). You CAN vote for whoever you want, that doesn't make it moral. The purpose of primaries is for the voters within the party to get together and decide the platform and candidate for that party.

Plus, between local and state elections, you have even more say with your vote. You could even run for office locally and have a chance of winning.

popcap200 ,

Your issue isn't with the lack of choice. Your issue is that your candidates don't win.
