I'm not sure telling them to hire an assassin is the right move, but it sounds like you have some personal experience here.

First online friend I ever made, decades ago at this point, seemed like an alright dude, but was a little too knowledgeable about viruses and malware. Lost contact, ten or so years later I found his Facebook and discovered he'd gone to prison for nearly half a million dollars of check fraud.

That must have been some really awful gravy, 😞

Not in the sense that there's some separate component than body and mind.

I mean this as nicely as possible but if the difference between 30fps tops and steady 60 isn't obvious to you, you're either ignorant of what you're missing, or you're too casual for it to matter

My comment didn't mention resolution or quality of graphics at all. I'm only talking about framerate, which has a major impact on how responsive and fluid the controls feel. All else being equal, a higher framerate typically just feels nicer to play. Compare Super Mario 64 (30fps) to Super Smash Bros. (60fps).

Jesus was in all likelihood a person who existed, he just didn't have the credentials often attributed to him

Limited, sure, but not absent. How much of the article you linked did you read? The second and further sections of that article make a fairly compelling case for there having been someone who fit most of the criteria, and it also specifically addresses your "bunch of Christian historians" bit.

“These are all Christian and are obviously and understandably biased in what they report, and have to be evaluated very critically indeed to establish any historically reliable information,” Ehrman says. “But their central claims about Jesus as a historical figure—a Jew, with followers, executed on orders of the Roman governor of Judea, Pontius Pilate, during the reign of the Emperor Tiberius—are borne out by later sources with a completely different set of biases.”

It's not like

I think it is well beyond rumors when a historian four generations later writes about you. You're welcome to disagree though. That's the nice thing about opinions is that everybody gets to have their own.

Shouldn't minimum wage just increase proportionately to inflation?

Most jobs will give you a performance review and a raise every year to account for inflation and any increased duties you’ve taken on. We increase minimum wage by massive amounts after far too many years which causes all sorts of economic concerns, business complaints, and just a bunch of arguments everywhere. Shouldn’t they...

Cost of living adjustments need to become a regular and expected demand from workers. Because yes, if they conveniently fail to give you a raise that at least meets inflation every year, they are effectively cutting your pay in a way that the legal system has absolutely no problems with.

Edit: Not just minimum wage, ALL wage. Inflation adjustments are the bare minimum for the company to be maintaining your value. Performance raises etc. need to happen in addition to that.

Don't even need to spend too much effort making sure you hit the target.

Tons of obvious scam storefronts in the shopping results lately, too. (I mainly use it to compare prices and to try to find things that might be in local stores near me.)

  1. I don't intend to victim blame or defend any abusers here; this shit is vile and should not be tolerated, period.

  2. From the below, it sounds like it was determined that, despite Omegle's moderation efforts, Omegle could have done better in areas relating to age verification and matchmaking. So I'm not trying to defend or minimize Omegle's role either, I don't know the details of how the site worked but it sounds like this was a problem for a long time:

the judge in A.M.’s case found last July that Omegle’s design was at fault and it was not protected by Section 230: It could have worked to prevent matches between minors and adults before sexual content was even sent, the judge said.

  1. However, I really don't like the choice of phrasing "forced", and I wonder whether that's poor paraphrasing or actually taken from the lawsuit.

Her lawsuit, filed in 2021, alleged that she met a man in his thirties on Omegle who forced her to take naked photos and videos over a three-year period. She was just 11 when it began in 2014.

Again, to be clear, not trying to say that the victim should, or even could, have done anything differently. Victim blaming is bad. But how the hell are they saying "forced" to do something by some scumbag over the internet? What kind of conditions does a kid have to be in at home to feel like they can't turn to their parent/guardian for help in a terrifying situation like that? How is an 11-year-old in 2014 being allowed to get into that situation in the first place, between her parents and her school?

It seems like this victim was failed by every support system she should have been able to rely on. This is so messed up. This is exactly why we need things like sex education and Internet safety education.

why do some people really dislike google??

i don’t want to offend anyone, but some open source/privacy enthusiasts dislike google, but why?? google has made chromium, android, etc and most of the things they do are open source, and not only that, they also support creative commons media or public domain. i know the privacy concernes they may have, but they would never...

Multi-billion-dollar corporations do not deserve the benefit of the doubt. Companies do not act morally unless they are legally compelled to.

[US] Looking for some ideas for freelance work / "side hustle"

Title. I found out recently that I need some major dental work in the near future and I don't have a damn clue how I am going to raise the extra money. I want to explore any realistic options for increasing my earnings before I have to resort to taking on debt, and I suspect that soliciting ideas in a semi-public place like this...

Maybe that was the wrong choice of words. What would you suggest? I guess I can edit that to "side hustle" instead if that's more appropriate...?

I wish I had even a mote of bilingual ability, translation work sounds like it would be interesting. I should definitely try my hand at amateur voice work though! That's a great idea, and I would never have considered it an option. Thank you!

Well, you're entirely right, but unfortunately that doesn't help me much in the moment. I appreciate your response regardless. <3

I will look into the dental schools in my area, thank you. I was so focused on finding a local dentist that would take an uninsured patient that it completely slipped my mind.
