Joe Biden's claim that Hamas’s October 7 attacks were “driven by ancient desire to wipe out the Jewish people" is ahistorical and dangerous. In fact, Jewish history shows that antisemitism is a Western problem.

They knew Israel would react like this: they expected and provoked this response because it supports other goals they have, which do not include saving Palestinian lives.

Trump has said FOUR times that he will withhold federal funding from schools that require vaccines. Not just COVID. ALL.

This is most schools. This is hitting me where I work. This will lead to children dead from measles. It's obvious, inevitable.

Someone on here said they just couldn't bear to vote for Biden to keep Trump from office since at least under Trump there were better masking rules.

Recently found another time saver at TSA. You don’t actually have to take your hoodie off. When they ask you to, you can usually just say you don’t want to, then they’ll warn you it might cause the scanner to flag you for pat down but let you keep it on. If it doesn’t have zips or any metal, it’s unlikely to trigger the scanner, but even if it does the pat down is way quicker than having to take it off and put it back on.

/ Annual Antisemitism Report (with TAU): "Antisemitism Worldwide Report for 2023
Concern for the Future of Jewish Life in the West"

I had to read it again: "Concern for the Future of Jewish Life in the West"... Also absent in the aftermath of October 7th discussion is any reference to the atrocities committed by Israel in Gaza, for which it is under active investigation both in the and and is an obvious contributor to the rise in anti-war protests around the world.

Reminder: The is a controversial North American organization, claiming to be an authority on the subject of antisemitism. It has been criticized for its equation of anti-Zionism with antisemitism and for allegedly undermining left-wing and pro-Palestinian activism.

The has been accused of inflating the number of antisemitic incidents to support its narrative of rising antisemitism. For example, in 2017, the ADL included 163 bomb threats to synagogues in its "harassment" statistics, even though these threats were attributed to a single disturbed individual. Critics argue that this "alarmism" serves the institutional imperative of the ADL and other similar organizations. https://www.wrmea.org/israel-palestine/adls-campaign-to-silence-criticism-of-israel-by-calling-it-anti-semitism.html

Critics also argue that the 's conflation of with -Zionism and criticism of Israel silences legitimate criticism of Israel's policies and actions toward Palestinians. They claim that this equation deflects attention from the actions of the Israeli government, soldiers, and settlers, and threatens the livelihoods of journalists and academics who deviate from the ADL's narrative. https://www.theguardian.com/news/2024/jan/05/adl-pro-israel-advocacy-zionism-antisemitism

In May 2022, ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt sparked controversy by equating anti-Zionism with antisemitism and labeling groups advocating for Palestinian rights, such as Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), and the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), as "extremist." This comparison was criticized by both ADL staff and external observers, who argued that it undermined the ADL's ability to build coalitions with other groups and fight antisemitism effectively. https://jewishcurrents.org/adl-staffers-dissented-after-ceo-compared-palestinian-rights-groups-to-right-wing-extremists-leaked-audio-reveals

The Report:

Interestingly, though, the authors do not perceive criticism of Israel as antisemitism. They state that "criticizing Israel, including in harsh terms, is NOT antisemitism." However, seeking its elimination as the national home of the Jewish people, including through the false argument that it is an unlawful colonial enterprise, is antisemitic. The problem is, of course, that Israel is a "colonial" byproduct, while calling for its elimination is not a conclusion of such an observation more than the elimination of the USA, Australia, New Zealand, or any other colonies.

The authors identify several factors that have contributed to the rise of antisemitism, including:

  • The war in Gaza
  • The rise of populism in the West
  • The spread of antisemitism on social media
  • The failure of academia to address antisemitism on campus
  • The influence of foreign funding on academia
  • The failure of political leaders to condemn antisemitism

[...] The Report notes that hate speech was articulated even before Israel launched its campaign in Gaza, including on leading university campuses, and thus urged against seeing the recent wave of antisemitism as an emotional response to the war. "Some antisemitic attackers emphasize their problem is with Israel, not with Jews, and then attack Jews and Jewish institutions."

[...] Dr. Carl Yonker, Senior Researcher and Project Manager at the "Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry," TAU, who wrote a study for the Report on antisemitism in the United States, said: "Contrary to the conventional wisdom, post-October 7 incidents were also led from the far right in America. Neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and others glorified Hamas and used the war to spread antisemitic propaganda along with conspiracy theories, according to which the crisis will advance the replacement of the white majority in the West by migrants from the Middle East. The fringes in the United States are encroaching on the political center from both right and left, making combating antisemitism much trickier."

    Finally, a clear-eyed view of the fantasy of reviving energy as a major component of the energy transition to tackle climate change:

    MisuseCase ,
    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    @petergleick @martinvermeer Well, that’s the case for every other form of low-GhG energy right now too, because it’s mostly market-based and there’s a lack of political will to transition faster. So it’s not like this is a problem exclusive to nuclear.

    Also the people who say things like this don’t care to acknowledge the role of past anti-nuclear sentiment (sometimes their own) in preventing nuclear from being built when it could have made a difference.

    1/2

    MisuseCase ,
    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    @petergleick @martinvermeer So “compared to what?” and “why is it too late now?” are both key questions/considerations that people like the author of this piece don’t care to ask or prompt people to think about.

    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    @martinvermeer @petergleick Massive subsidies like solar and wind got (and are still getting) to make it to this point?

    Again, “compared to what” is an important consideration.

    MisuseCase ,
    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    @martinvermeer @petergleick France got it to work by standardizing on one kind of reactor and they decarbonized their whole grid back in the 70s. China’s able to build them quickly because they standardized on 2 reactors (although they are also building solar and coal).

    It’s not like it isn’t doable, but most Western countries were prevented from doing it back then, by the same contingent who says it’s too late now.

    MisuseCase ,
    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    @petergleick @martinvermeer The thing about this argument is that it’s a hard-nosed capitalist argument when hard-nosed capitalists have been the ones saying it’s too expensive to decarbonize, build mass transportation, build sense housing, etc.

    And if you can say “the cost is too high and it takes too long,” you could say it about offshore wind projects too, which are costly and take years to start generating power.

    At this juncture, the International Court of Justice () should probably hold both the United States and Israel accountable for their actions in Gaza, which may amount to ....

    The Biden administration is considering over $1 billion in new weapons deals for Israel, including tank ammunition, military vehicles, and mortar rounds. The proposed weapons transfers would be one of the largest to Israel since its invasion of Gaza that resulted in the deaths of more than 30,000 Gazans, at least. @w7voa Iran was courteous enough to give plenty of warning ahead of time and use something relatively slow, I think they want to show they are serious but also want us to de-escalate.

    Netanyahu is the one who wants an all-out war because butchering Palestinians isn’t working out well. We should regime change him, he’s too dangerous.

    / Save the Hostages, Save Israel (Haaretz Editorial)

    Haaretz's editorial raises serious questions about the breakdown in the chain of command within the Israeli defense establishment, suggesting that the decision to carry out the assassination of some of the children and grandchildren of Ismail Haniyeh, may have been made without the knowledge or approval of senior political and military leaders. This points to a concerning pattern of reckless decisions, from bombing a university to employing tactics that jeopardize the lives of hostages, that have only served to complicate and prolong the crisis.

    [...] The public has no real way of knowing whether the defense establishment failed to inform the government and obtain its approval before the attack; whether it's true that not even the head of Southern Command, much less the military chief of staff, were informed of the attack in advance; or whether the person who approved the attack was the commander of Southern Command's targeting center, an officer with the rank of colonel. Trust in the system is so low that it's hard to accept the explanations that were given without a dose of skepticism.

    [...] If the public doesn't turn out en masse to demand that the people responsible for the rolling disaster they have brought down on Israel vacate their offices and give someone else a chance to salvage the situation, the country's future will be at risk, and so will the hostages' lives.

    @oatmeal @israel @palestine The murder of the WCK volunteers was like this too, with the officer who ordered the air strikes apparently going rogue. Apparently.

    I should know I have been working in security policy and compliance for 15+ years.

    Netanyahu is the symptom, not the disease.

    The disease is the system that elected him twice to Prime Minister.

    The disease is the society that approves of the slaughter in .

    The disease is an apartheid State that has fostered a racist society that doesn't think of Palestinians as human beings.

    The disease is the USA funding all of this because they care more about their interests (Israel is an unsinkable aircraft carrier) than about human life or the rule of law.
