The #Netflix drama's depiction of China is, well, problematic. How did the people of China react to it? In this issue I highlight what Chinese viewers think about the 3 Body Problem.
Have just begun watching “The Spirealm” with Huang Junjie and Xia Zhiguang 🌸 It’s not my usual genre, but since it is perhaps a Chinese BL or danmei, it is rather remarkable that is is airing at all. The idea is that people are drawn into a computer game where they can die in the real world if they die in the game. There is suspense and a delicate chemistry between the leads.
@Sollenbum I've heard good reviews of this show, it receives such a good rating on Viki. Not sure if its up my street, I usually like period pieces, but might give it a go. Thanks for mentioning it.
@stevendrowe Like you, I prefer historical dramas but venture into other genres, too. BL dramas always seem to have extremely high ratings on Viki, so perhaps that is because the fan base is particularly effective in their ratings?
The first episodes were a little slow, because of the world-building but the relationship between the two main leads is nice so I’ll stay to see what happens in the next arc of the drama…
I guess they had a good run. Here's the new ruling:
“Key ultrashort dramas” — those with a budget of over 1 million yuan ($138,000) or touching on “special” themes — will be reviewed directly by the National Radio and Television Administration, while smaller projects will be screened by provincial authorities or streaming platforms. Any drama that has not passed through this review system must be removed from circulation.
Hi all! Thought I'd do a public intro post now that things are mostly set up here! Long time fangirl, more recent few years have gotten into Chinese BL novels and haven't found my way out yet. Not specifically fannish on any particular novel but I go through them quick! The occasional #cdrama when I have time to marathon through 40 eps in one weekend. 😂 Account is locked cos I post about RL a lot but feel free to add! I'll friend back! 中文和粤语都还行!
My dad loved old Chinese tales and used to tell me the stories. One of the ones I remember best is The Eight Immortals. Someone on Youtube described them as the "OG Chinese Avengers" and I was like, this is a perfect description of them. And each character is so iconic.
And I must've watched this 1985 version cos I remember the song so much!
I need a #kdrama or #cdrama recommendation where the romance has a happy ending, please? I cannot afford to have my heart shredded by fiction currently.
And my brain doesn’t seem to be able to deal with words currently so I’m not reading.
Am now watching episode 13 of "Under the Skin" 🌸 The scene where Shen Yi releases the butterflies is visually stunning and is laden with symbolism. The case was a heavy one about gang rape and abuse but the girl was symbolically set free with those butterflies 🦋
@geraineon@liztai I can relate to that sentiment although I quite like the team spirit in the department. The main leads also develop a relationship of respect that I think possibly has been created more by the acting than the plot in the script.
From MyDramaList's 2023 year summary. This is actually a good reflection of my taste in dramas. (Note the lack of romance dramas lol and lots of wuxias & thrillers hehe.) And apparently 90% of my dramas are rated 7 or 8, and about 8% or so are 9.
@liztai You inspired me to have a look at my 2023 in dramas 🌸 Mine are quite different from yours 😄 Actually, almost the reverse. Except for Mysterious Lotus Casebook, my highest rated dramas are all romances.
So a Discord group I am part of asked - what 12 dramas will I recommend people?
So this is a list of my favourite #CDramas and #KDramas. Have you seen any of them?
@liztai@Sollenbum Just realized that Cheng Lei is the male lead in "A Familiar Stranger" but, of course, also the charismatic second lead in "My Journey to You" 🌸 Odd that I hadn't seen that before, because he is remarkable in both dramas.
What are the top 3 favourite c-dramas that you watched this year? Let's go #cdrama
My favourites are Meet Yourself 去有风的地方,There Will Be Ample Time 故乡,别来无恙, and Once Upon a Time in Lingjian Mountain 从前有座灵剑山 (this is an old one but didn't get to it until now).
I need to go and see what historical/wuxia/xianxia dramas i missed from this year
I am watching the #ThreeBody#CDrama version and also saw the #Netflix version's teaser. I compared the same scene with the Cdrama one, and I can tell you - I do not have a good feeling about the Netflix adaptation. The Netflix version of that scene lacks the gravitas, urgency and sophistication of the Cdrama version.
I am also worried they are going to water down or completely erase the Chinese perspectives and cultural context, which is really important.
@cpkimber they turned that scene into a comedic moment. Dear lord, that was the first sign something was wrong. The whole game sequence was ominous and almost terrifying due to the implications, so i am not sure why they did that scene that way.
Saw someone use "emotional support celebrity" (I think!) in the fandom chat replies. ZRY is my emotional support cdrama celebrity because (touch wood so I don't curse this) he is zero percent controversial and very carefully picks projects that doesn't invite shipping...
(This is not a judgment on RPS ships. It's a me thing)
*Not really support I guess. Hm. Emotional assurance?
#AJourneyToLove is one of those rare #CDramas with gorgeous cinematography. Saw the first episode and was immediately hooked. Assassins, embroidered guards, spies, oh my! Trying to control myself and stockpile the episodes so that I don't have to wait too long for new episodes 😁
@villainousfriend TBH I don't really care if it's idol or not as long as it's a good drama. I loved Wonderland of Love for one! Tho, I don't really know Liu Yuning lol
