    Leaves and flowers are edible but not fine eating. The flowers are better than the leaves - tastes like a floral, a bit overripe cucumber. The leaves are grassy.

    Rabbits love this plant and will chew it down to stubble so if you actually want to see flowers, it needs protection.

    A gloriously beautiful fly that looks a bit like a bee on white flowers with green foliage in the background. The direction of the photo is looking down on the fly’s head. The eyes are an opaque matte black and look like a bikini top on its head. The rest of the head is sunflower yellow with a long black stripe in the center. It has a black tongue sticking into the flower. The thorax is mostly black with two pairs of short yellow stripes. Its two wings are resting closed together and are translucent reddish brown. The legs are long, thin and reddish towards the tarsi and yellow near the abdomen. The flowers are closely packed together on a stem with thin white petals looking like they’re barely hanging on to the green star-shaped cup center.

    The blooms started in early spring. The internet says they bloom in the fall. (Lies, LIES!) Plant is not self-fertile so you need two. Currently hand-pollinating bc only two plants have opened flowers and the rest are still buds. No pests noticed. Needs protection from high winds.

    year and 1/2 ago, chipdrop arborists used a stump grinder and chopped up a lot of iris bulbs with the tree and brought the bulbs with the drop. I planted all of them and some are flowering now… a couple months early.

    And this winter was so mild, squirrels planted peanuts in the yard last fall and they survived and grew. Replanted them in the garden.

    Partially dug up peanut seedlings on bare ground. There are five clustered together. The stalks were nibbled on by rabbits and are regrowing along the sides.

The bee is hanging upside down at the base of one ripe whitish flower so that you only see its fuzzy, yellow, thorax, and black head and antennae sticking out on either side with its prickly legs cling to the flowe. The immature unopened flowers are a bright pink and look like deflated balloons. The whitish ones are more puffed out and have faded shades of pink. The lighting is late afternoon sun and it casts a yellow light that makes the flowers glow with color.
