A butterfly with black and yellow patterned wings perched on a yellow thistle flower with thistles leaves, buds and other foliage in the background. The butterfly is facing left and has its proboscis poking inside the top spines of the flower. The thistle flower is a green ball of spines with small spiny arugula-like leaves wrapped around the bud. On top of the green ball are numerous yellow spikes.

The thorax is very fuzzy and yellow, and the abdomen is black and fuzzy. Its wings are clear but with black veins. And the photo they’re rather blurry because they beat very fast. In this pic, the moth has pulled away and its proboscis is hanging out in front.

    @plants I showed Draba aizoides yesterday, which was the first to open in the on Sunday, but several more opened yesterday, in time for
    2 vids in replies show all the flowers and a short walk.
    Sunny heading for 18C today, so there should be lots more Crocus at least today!

    A mound of low stiff deep green foliage arranged in tightly packed rosettes of tightly packed overlapping leaves, with scattered dry seed stems from last year, and many apical bud clusters., surrounded by and growing between rocks. A single tiny white flower is open.

    A zebra swallowtail butterfly on leafy green blackberry brambles full of white buds and white flowers. This pic is taken more towards its side and is facing top left. The wings are mostly open and the left wing is pointed to the camera.

    A zebra swallowtail butterfly on leafy green blackberry brambles full of white buds and white flowers. The black stripes run parallel to its black body, except on the end of his wings where curves at an angle with the shape of its wings. At the end of its wings is an eye spot that looks more red-haired matryoshka doll head with black eyes nose and mouth. Above either side of the doll is dusted iridescent blue specks. The tips of the swallowtail’s tails are white.

    A Common Buckeye!!!

    This butterfly has been on my wish list for years! I mean YEARS!!! I've never even SEEN one before!

    (*they're supposed to be common - it's literally in the name - but they've felt like the white whale of butterflies for me lol.)

    It was gone so fast. One quick stop & then it zoomed away. I was only able to get a few mediocre shots, but OMG! A Common Buckeye! FINALLY!!!

    My heart is still pounding! 😂

    A slightly different angle of the same Common Buckeye on pink yarrow flowers. This is a better shot of the dorsal side with the wings spread wide, although slightly off kilter because I had a bad angle. But it shows the full extent of the exquisite patterning of the wings (see first photo for a description). The left and right sides are a perfect mirror image of one another.

    A Common Buckeye on pink yarrow flowers. Further detail: it is a brown butterfly with very large, distinctive "eyespots" on the wings. There are also two rectangular orange patches on the leading edge of the forewings & additional orange and white coloration around the dark eyespots. The yarrow flowers are pink with white centers. They're tiny flowers that bloom in dense clusters. They appear a bit washed out in this photo due to very strong afternoon sunlight.

    I was working in the garden - and didn't really want to stop to go get the camera - but it's brilliantly sunny today. And in strong sunlight these wings have a gorgeous metallic glow.

    So I went & got the camera.

    And that's when the Common Buckeye zoomed into my garden. I had a few seconds to try for a good angle (meh) and then it was gone.

    But the fact I have any pics at all is literally thanks to this beauty!!!

    I don't remember taking this picture, but I must have, and recently. I think that this butterfly is a common buckeye (Junonia coenia), I don't have an app for insects but I try to ID them with google search. When I post a photo.

    This butterfly sits on a dead branch. The background is mostly branches and leaves. The butterfly is brown with orange and black markings. The underside of the right wing is visible revealing and orange section with a round decorative marking that includes a black dot surrounded by a lighter orange ring that is in turn surrounded by a black ring. Very pretty. "Common buckeye butterflies are colored mostly brown with some orange, black, white, blue, and magenta. The forewing features two proximal orange bars and a postmedian white band, which surrounds a prominent black eyespot and borders a smaller, more distal eyespot; both eyespots have a bluish center and each border a distal orange mark. The hindwing is mostly brown with an orange band towards the edge and a brown and white margin. It also has two eyespots, one larger and one smaller, each with a black and white outline, and a center consisting of black, blue, magenta, and orange.
