Who should be software packaging is a tough problem, I can see the value in distros pushing for better changes downstream, encouraging upstream to change (double click in ) but then I see cases like KeepassXC where the Debian package is now by default broken, actively damaging the reputation of upstream but then I remember where upstream was left unchecked and hid bad code in plain sight and I go back around in a circle.

@BrodieOnLinux I strongly believe in distro packaged software.
But we have to move the culture so that users report their bugs to the software distributor, and not directly to the upstream github. Upstream "issues" should be reserved for the developers and their inner circle of people who test the latest versions, and maybe the distributors themselves.

Users of the distributors (i.e. distros) should encourage users reporting bugs to them, and they report up when needed.

FOSS - ensuring even new hardware stays in use when vendor-support eventually ends!

Whether or not you install GNU/Linux on it today, your new will eventually lose support. Thanks to the impressive work of project (@AsahiLinux), it will not need to end up in the landfill once it does.

Stallman intervened in the Q&A section of "AI in a Closed World", objecting to the term Artificial Intelligence

After a lengthy discussion, RMS said he'd rather call it "Machine Learning."

And there we are, once again reducing a technological revolution to a petty lexicological argument, just like the "Free Software" vs "Open Source Software" flamewars 20 years ago 🤦‍♀️

Bittersweet feelings on day 2 of the @fsf conference! So many amazing talks are waiting, and I am expecially looking forward to "Software enshittification or freedom? It's not a hard choice!" by @lxo but also sad that this event is almost over. Determined to make the most of it!

I've seen a lot of interesting discussion regarding Mint's choice to downgrade some apps to the GTK3 version, later fork them. Whilst a lot of people have been critical let me provide another perspective

Projects like Mint do not like the state of GNOME/where it is going, instead of just sitting around whining about how much they don't like it they've taken it upon themselves to fork tools and maintain them for their own project. You may disagree with that choice but this is the spirit of FOSS

nicemicro ,
@nicemicro@fosstodon.org avatar

@BrodieOnLinux are we really at the point in when people will whine about those who only complain and do nothing, and they equally whine about those who actually work on the thing?

Is a user only satisfied when all the developers are working exactly on the things that specific user needs?

It has the same energy as the "why isn't X distribution cater to everyone instead of their specific target user?" comments.

EU elections to the will take place at the beginning of June. 🇪🇺

As a enthusiast you can advocate for it!

💡 For example, you can ask your candidates if they know what Free Software is and tell them why it is important for a democratic society!
