Here's another handy feature you might not know about! If you're working on a long document and want to focus on the body text, uncheck View > Whitespace in the menu, and headers, footers and page breaks disappear: https://help.libreoffice.org/latest/en-US/text/swriter/01/show_whitespace.html

1st: Have a look at cross-platform applications that are available on the current platform and Linux, and see if they are good for you (e.g. #LibreOffice, #Zotero, #Firefox, #Thunderbird, #Qoppa #PDFStudio, ...)

2nd: Is your computer/notebook and your printer etc. well supported by #Linux? Check the internet for it.

3rd: After switching: Look first for software in the distribution repositories and not on the websites of the projects. Install it from the distribution if available.

Boom 💥

I use libreoffice all day every day but still spend an unreasonable amount of time trawling through menus trying to find functions.

When I was in Indiana last week, I found a floppy disk in my dad's desk and was able to recover the files from them and put them on a USB drive. They were documents and forms he had created back in 1994 with Word Perfect that triggered a number of memories for him. Luckily, I could read the floppy disk from and could read/convert the files.

Yay! German state moving 30,000 PCs to LibreOffice https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2024/04/04/german-state-moving-30000-pcs-to-libreoffice/ Taxpayers money should go towards FLOSS and not the proprietary vendors.

Question! Why should local governments use taxpayers’ money to buy proprietary, closed software from a single vendor? And what happens to citizens' data? A solution is to move to free and open source software like and – which is exactly what Schleswig-Holstein is doing: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2024/04/04/german-state-moving-30000-pcs-to-libreoffice/

I had a sudden "what if…?" intuition for a potential speedup in my bug reporting workflow when tables of data are involved, and… it turns out that it is actually possible.

As you can see in this short demonstration I recorded below, you can paste cells into a ticket, and it automatically converts it to a proper table. It just works! What is this sorcery!? 🤯 What a time to be alive.

A short video showing a LibreOffice Calc spreadsheet with many cells selected, copy-pasted into a GitLab ticket editing form, and the cells get converted to MarkDown table format
