"As a chili pepper lover myself I absolutely do not get this garbage trope of treating chili pepper consumption as some kind of contest. The idea is to add heat to your food - not prove your pathetic "manliness.""

I agree and so does Aunty Donna:

Just DON'T go to the tour office in Hawaii 😳

Yes, it took eighty years but they eventually realized making their Yakuza affiliation obvious to everyone could hinder some of the criming.

Recommended focal length for outdoor youth sports?

I think I'm going to lean into the FF E-mount world, which means giving up my D5300 + Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR (115 - 450 FF equivalent). Before kids, I used this lens for motorsports/landscape/travel. Post kids we don't do a ton of that, so I've been getting along well with a pair of 35mm and 50mm primes....

Andonyx ,

I assume you know this, but I believe the d5300 has a crop sensor of 1.5. So if you shoot at say 300 regularly with that you would need to shoot 450 with an a9 to get the same FOV/zoom.

I have the Sigma 100-400 DX for my a6400 so I'm getting an equivalent FOV of 600mm. The lens is still rock solid with image stabilization, even fully hand-held. The auto focus motors are lickety-fast. It's ~$900, and I'm thrilled with it.

It sound like you really liked the a9, which is cool, get a body you like and are comfortable with, but you may still get more use from an APS-C than a full frame for less money. You said everything is outdoor day, and now the upscaling in PS, or Capture One, etc are so good prints from the smaller sensor don't have to suffer.

Well, that's two of my particular cents, but I also would be curious what others would have to say.

Andonyx ,

Yeah, I hope I didn't come off as like I was talking down, I was trying to keep the numbers and concerns in my head, and I see your first paragraph makes it clear you already understand all that.

I have used it for sports, not as a pro, and not often, I thought it did an admirable job. I mostly use it for birds, but it really handles fast panning well in my opinion, which think translates reasonably from birds to sports.

Now one thing I'm not necessarily trying for is the blurred background panning to give a sense of speed and motion. At least I'm not making that priority, so can't speak to that kind of performance. But I think it should be as easily doable as most of the lenses you mentioned.

Andonyx ,

I actually took it to one MLB game and a couple farm games more to experiment and learn than anything else.

I'm guessing as far as range, the farm stadium setup would be a decent approximation of what you're doing. And if I wanted to get the very cool shot of a pitcher mid throw with sweat coming off the face, and the ball leaving the hand from say the waist up... yeah I would have to use pretty close to 400. But most action shots, like a slide, or home plate tag... No, more like you said, 300 ish, maybe less.

You talked about future proofing, I don't know if this is relevant but I can say the larger stadium makes a significant difference, but also because they don't let me hang out with the actual press on the field.

I do also have a feeling that at least on my APS-C , anything longer would absolutely require a monopod at least, even with the stabilization on the lens. (The 6400 doesn't have IBIS). I don't know if that would be practical for your purposes or setup.

Those shots are from years ago on a HDD somewhere. I'll see if can find any to give you an example.

Andonyx ,

Sorry, all my measurements are without conversion. So yeah I'm shooting between 450-600. Mostly towards the lower end but occasionally all the way. I also think the150-500 would be a nice move but I have no experience with the Tamron as far as focus speed and stability.

Ditto on the Sony G-master or whatever, when I see birders with one, I always wonder if they worked up to it or just bought the highest end lens they could. It has to be super hard to use that range without a gimble mount.

Andonyx ,

UC cousin in the house. I got a cheap bidet seat, loved it, and ended up splurging for the full on Toto, automated, temperature adjusted, and air dry bidet. If THAT'S not heaven, it's awfully close .

Seriously, you'll practically weep with how much less miserable a flare up is with one of these nearby.

Andonyx ,

As Melisdrawing made clear, never feel bad about using new information to make a better decision.

Andonyx ,

I do work for a bunch of pharmaceutical companies and developing nation health outreach type organizations. (Don't ask me much technical, I'm not personally on the medical side.) But I can tell you that most major pharmas, Health NGOs and Government drug safety regulatory bodies are keenly aware that "Vaccines are a victim of their own success." They have multiple approaches to dealing with the problem that a successful vaccine campaign makes the need for the vaccines socially invisible. There are varying degrees of success, but not a lot of generalized and reliable ways to combat this kind of cognitive disconnect.

Also thought it was webs in a sunbeam for a sec. The opposite of calming, really.

Would Lemmy Benefit from Implementing Polls? ( slrpnk.net )

A popular way of dealing with discussions, and familiar to most people, I assume. As far as I see it, adding a poll system to Lemmy is a good way to enhance user engagement. I'm not really aware if this has been a topic before or not, tried looking it up but didn't see much juice on the topic, so thought I'd spark it up....

Andonyx ,

Why is Javascript on Twitter?

Andonyx ,

That was a lame joke about the check mark. 😔

Andonyx ,

Yeah honestly. I know we (USA), do any number of things In a screwed up way, but it's also what I'm used to. There's NO border control anywhere around there? Seems weird to me.

Andonyx ,

Surewhynotlem is right...buuuut. Shorting is very much like betting, in that the more people who bet the same way, the worse those odds get; like how a bookmaker does things to balance cash in vs cash out.

The bookie reduces exposure by changing payout odds as betting increases on one side, so you win less and less as more people buy in on a specific bet over time.

In this case, the fees, which are the price of "buying" the short bet go up and up as more people get in line to short. That means the short has to go very far very fast to make up the initial share cost plus fees.

TLDR, you could short the stock, but so many people already have, the fees are starting to become prohibitive unless you have a large bankroll for investing.

I'm actually almost impressed that it cites the Lord Mansfield decision of 1772, which effectively abolished slavery throughout the British Empire, and was foundational to the American Abolition movement. It makes a weird kind of sense.

Then again, are they saying they're not beholden to the US government because they're still working under imperial law? 🤔

'Cause that's where I draw the line! 😡

Andonyx OP ,

Yes, but I find their uncovered legs disturbing. It's like full body shots of Kermit, something ain't right.

Andonyx OP ,

Serious question, did you actually have / find that picture laying around or is that an AI image? No shade either way, it's fantastic, I'm just always amazed that someone can find a perfect specific picture no matter where the conversation goes.

Andonyx OP ,

Appreciate the informative response. Thanks!

Andonyx ,

Because those very same cops also have access to evidence. And within days every single female officer's bathroom pics will be in the text messages of every male officer.

Andonyx ,

I think we're saying the same thing. 🤔

Andonyx ,

I grew up in NOVA. And while I agree with your assessment, you can't in good faith sell someone on those benefits without also mentioning the miserable, never-ending traffic nightmare that exists 24 hours a day anywhere near the beltway. I've lived in Manhattan, Chicago in three different neighborhoods and of course the DC metro area. I just spent a week in Fairfax, and it is the worst traffic I've ever seen outside of Atlanta at rush hour. And in VA, it's ALL THE TIME.

Andonyx ,

When I was in HS, back in the early 90s, my friend's father worked for a 3 letter office, near the Fed Triangle. He got up at 4:30 am every morning to make it to the office by 6 to avoid the worst traffic. That was 30 years ago!

Andonyx ,

I have to agree, if the headline says, "Man dies after drinking Drano," nobody is under the impression it was a coincidence.

Andonyx ,

"Ofc, Bender Bending Rodriguez is capable and willing to bend anything, including gender, but this wasn't that episode"

Good save, you almost got one helluva nerd thrashing.

Andonyx ,

For real? That's how we got ours too! (I'm exactly stranger things age.) Who was leaving all the porn in the woods?!?! Why? Why are anthropologists not dropping everything to figure this out?

Andonyx ,

Sniff...maybe I should try to reconcile with my older brother... 😥

Andonyx ,

I like cinnamon raisin bagels...with scallion and herb cream cheese. It's sweet and savory and the contrast is as good as a super hot shower with an ice cold drink.

Breugger's bagels, may they rest in peace, used to have a bacon/scallion cream cheese. That was divine on cinnamon raisin bagels. I don't know what upset people more, the scallion on a sweet substrate, or the bacon on a bagel. It doesn't matter, if this is goy, I don't want to be kosher.

Andonyx ,

Apparently they still exist. I just haven't seen one in my city in almost 20 years. A quick search shows they're now owned by the same parent company as Einstein. Einstein is fine but I liked Breugger's better.

Andonyx ,

Didn't know they could look like that. Neat!

Andonyx ,

Hey everybody! ConstipatedWatson is Satoshi!

Andonyx ,

Is this the same person who does Elden Ring lore analysis? They do good shit.

Andonyx ,

I don't want to spoil anything, but if you decide that his back story has twisted him into a vengeful madman, you can uhh...get pretty crazy powerful with him late game.

Andonyx ,

Don't forget to have a proper polish with mustard, onions and sport peppers.

Andonyx ,

This should be another origin scenario for Cyberpunk 2077.

Andonyx ,

Don't forget ghost serial murderer / demon in Exorcist 3!

Andonyx ,

I'm guessing the same reason there are professional certifications for stage combat coordinators, stunt choreographers, and firearms instructors even for movies. If doing your job poorly could very likely result in harm to others on the job site, there should be some standards and practices that are explicit and measureable, and like the SAE, maybe a trade group who assists their members with certs and continuing education.

Handling sexual activity on a set can definitely result in harm if done poorly or negligently.

Andonyx ,

There's still plenty of time for Rockstar to make this a mission in GTAVI.

Lemmy.world Should Defederate with Threads

I think it’s pretty safe to say that the majority of us are here to avoid another corporate takeover of our preferred platforms. It would seem to me to be a tad irresponsible to allow Facebook into our space with open arms, allowing them to hoover up our data. I would love to keep using Lemmy.world, but will happily change...

Andonyx ,

If this functions to poll users broadly, then count another one for NOT federating. I came to Lemmy to not have my feed dominated by a tsunami of corporate junk curated by one of the worst influences in modern society. And if the counter argument is that I can block their content, then you can go join threads. I have no desire to be on a service where the majority of other users are constanly being fed crap from Meta and then interacting here, even if I can’t see the initial influence. I can go elsewhere, sure, and will if they federate, but I like it so far and would rather not. But consider, at least, the kind of thing .world will become if the only people here are people who think, “Hey, maybe Zuck’s new project won’t be so bad!”
