While the United States holiday was adopted by some other countries, existing celebrations, held on different dates, honoring motherhood have become described as "Mother's Day", such as Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom or, in Greece, the Eastern Orthodox celebration of the presentation of Jesus Christ to the temple (2 February of Julian Calendar). Both the secular and religious Mother Day are present in Greece. Mothering Sunday is often referred to as "Mother's Day" even though it is an unrelated celebration.

In some countries, the date adopted is one significant to the majority religion, such as Virgin Mary Day in Catholic countries. Other countries selected a date with historical significance. For example, Bolivia's Mother's Day is a fixed date, commemorating a battle in which women participated to defend their children.

Some countries, such as Russia, celebrated International Women's Day instead of Mother's Day or simply celebrate both holidays, which is the custom in Ukraine. Kyrgyzstan has recently introduced Mother's Day, but "year on year International Women's Day is certainly increasing in status". Source via Wikipedia

TL;DR In many countries the modern form of the holiday is strongly influenced by the US version but may be centered around an pre-existing holiday intended to celebrate motherhood from their unique cultural/religious traditions.

The Mummy at 25

Dangit... This makes me feel so old right now. Call me Imhotep because I'm downright ancient. 🤦‍♂️

Well he's not the one running a Presidential campaign as an Independent and telling the world about his brain worms. Believe it or not, not everything is about Bernie Sanders.

Your ignorance of current events does not make it a bad political cartoon.

r/The_Donald helped radicalize users into far-right identities and discourse – Active users on r/The_Donald increasingly used white nationalist vocabularies in their comments within three months. ( journals.sagepub.com )

I know most people that were on reddit at the time are fully aware of this and won't be surprised but don't dismiss the findings out of hand. It's important that studies are being conducted and the fact that the finding match our lived experience is still noteworthy.

Yeah, I've always described r/Conservative as The_Donald dressed up in their dad's suit and tie. But once The_Donald was finally banned (after they already left for their own website - thanks for nothing spez) r/Conservative dropped all pretenses.

It's 2024, anyone feigning ignorance about what constitutes a "far-right vocabulary" is just being disingenuous.

Did it actually radicalize, or just take the mask off?

When a community allows you to feel comfortable "taking the mask off" and embracing your inner bigot that is radicalization. So yes, The_Donald did radicalize people. Your comment is an attempt to highlight a distinction without a functional difference.

"Increasingly" is the key word there, pal.

I use Alexandrite on desktop but I'm excited about Lemmy-UI-Next which (IIRC) is being developed by one of admins of lemm.ee. It looks very promising.

For mobile I'm using Voyager (this account is actually on the instance for supporters.) I've tried everything available for iOS but Voyager is my daily driver, nothing else comes close to ticking as many boxes as Voyager does for me. I have Apollo sideloaded on my phone and it's incredible how much progress Voyager has made toward replicating the experience which is exactly what I want in a mobile app for Lemmy. The only thing it's missing is my favorite Apollo theme (Outrun).

Yeah I wanted to love mlmym but it's just too buggy and laggy for me. Hopefully lemmy-ui-next will prove to be a good replacement. If anyone's curious, that UI can previewed at: next.lemm.ee

Yeah, it's messed up that nearly everyone from the US would read that headline and make the same assumption without batting an eye because we've been conditioned to expect nothing else from police. It sure would be nice if we lived in a country where policing was actually a civil service and not a damn street gang.

"You had very fine people on both sides" - Donald Trump, after neo-Nazis marched through the streets of Charlottesville shouting "Jews will not replace us" while one of their own ran over counter-protesters with his car in August of 2017. Full transcript via Politico

lmao I'm always glad when I stumble upon a comment section like this where someone makes it abundantly clear that blocking them will be of no consequence whatsoever because they have absolutely no intention of approaching any discussion in good faith. It saves us all a little hassle, so thanks!

I would LOVE to be wrong, but sometimes that how the human scientific process works. We make a prediction THEN look at the evidence to see if we were right

A baseless prediction is of no value whatsoever. A theory with no evidence to support your claims is not worth anyone's time or consideration. But please, continue lecturing us about the scientific method.

Republicans are now the pro-dog killing party lol. If there's one thing you can depend on Republicans to do, it's make the dumbest choice imaginable in any given situation.

Rugrats was always my favorite by a wide margin but I was also a big fan of Rocko’s Modern Life, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Hey Arnold!, and The Angry Beavers as a kid. To be honest though I watched and enjoyed pretty much everything that aired on Nickelodeon in the ‘90s.

Seinfeld slams woke student audiences: “Back when I dated high school girls, they found me hilarious!” ( www.thebeaverton.com )

HOLLYWOOD – With his Netflix comedy film Unfrosted debuting to abysmal reviews, 70-year-old comedian Jerry Seinfeld blames the failure on “extreme left, and PC college campus audiences”, unlike in his heyday, when the teenage girls he dated were fans of his comedy.

I think many eventually do realize they've been burned and just stop showing up in these forums/groups. But you don't hear from them, just the diehards who are too deep into it and too dim to ever pick up on the fact that the SovCit movement is baseless nonsense no matter how often they're confronted with evidence of these little magical loopholes failing to work.

Change '90s to the '80s and you might have a point. Seinfeld debuted in 1989. His stand up career peaked in the mid '80s. Which makes me think you don't actually know what you're talking about and are just repeating something you heard from someone else.
