This is funny. OpenAI, who scraped the entire internet to build its product, is now enforcing copyright via notices. They still don’t give credit for stealing content from everyone, yet now acting like holier-than-thou https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT/comments/1cnvyzp/

    @nixCraft maybe others have pointed out already, but copyright and trademark violation are quite different, and OpenAI seems to be asserting on trademark not copyright in spite of the text here talking about "copyrighted logos" it seems more about unauthorized use of trademarked logo

    Not that I want to defend OpenAI, but if you want to pin them on something I don't think this would be it

    Over the weekend I applied this neat little CSS trick for implementing color change effect on the pagination component of my blog. One little CSS rule solves it for both light and dark themes!

    @Techaltar Cool Stuff!!

    Very briefly you mentioned how this might be useful for solar PV. Did you learn more on that?

    Theoretically it makes sense since silicon cells generate current from a certain wavelengths of light, meaning some of the sunlight is essentially unused, so putting some quantum dots in a layer to absorb those unused wavelengths and emit them as useful ones does sound like it would have a lot of promise, but I am sure there are reasons its not already being done.

    Me: I think I need more flexibility than what mastodon offers right now.

    Them: What do you mean? Mastodon is super flexible! What do you need?

    Me: Well I don't like X and I'd rather have Y.

    Them: Oh, yeah it definitely doesn't do that. But you're sort of wrong for wanting that anyway. Glad I could help!

    aeischeid ,
    @aeischeid@mastodon.social avatar

    @polotek This is clearly framed to make them seem absurd, but ...

    if X is a thing that is meant to be a thing that prevents abusive behavior and Y is a thing that enables even more abusive behavior (not saying it is... I haven't been following to know your X or Y, just, ya know...) then they would be absolutely be justified in replying that way

    ie. "you're sort of wrong for wanting that" is not necessarily an absurd stance/reply.

    That's right. It's sort of the core issue in educating people about LLMs. They don't "sometimes hallucinate". They always hallucinate. By design.

    But I also think we should graduate from saying they "just" make things up. They have a sophisticated inner model that means they're more likely to hallucinate towards things that seem correct when read by humans. And studying how they are able to do that is actually interesting.
    https://mastodon.social/@GeePawHill/112203183163246574

    aeischeid ,
    @aeischeid@mastodon.social avatar

    @polotek Pedantic maybe, but "hallucinating" is a thing that happens in a mind. There is no mind, there is no hallucination.

    Thus, there will be no progression, as is often implied, from it "imagining" fake things to "imagining" real things.

    Us humans are anthropomorphizing a process based on it's output, if anyone is hallucinating it is us.

    aeischeid ,
    @aeischeid@mastodon.social avatar

    @polotek None taken, "language is use" [Wittgenstein]. It evolves & is evolving for sure, but given how confused people are on this topic, as much as we can use more precise language I think it may be worth the effort.

    Instead of saying the machine hallucinated, or thought, or guessed, or any number of other subtle ways we suggest with our words that the machine had a mind or a mental model or emotions, we can frame it more accurately. Its not as easy as swapping one word for another, though.

    aeischeid ,
    @aeischeid@mastodon.social avatar

    @polotek @FeralRobots Yeah, it anthropomorphizes itself, but they are just words.

    You agree that uncritically believing whatever it says about the external world is bad, but seem to suggest its only natural to see its apologizes for being wrong as sincere, and, what, infer it is correcting its model of reality based on our input?

    Sure, re-roll the magic 8 ball for a better answer, but don't believe it's really sorry about its previous bad answer. If others do believe that, correct them.

    aeischeid ,
    @aeischeid@mastodon.social avatar

    @polotek @FeralRobots I am not attempting to be hostile. Aiming for dialog in good faith, not to pin you with some gotcha stuff.

    Based on what you were saying about the "ship had sailed" I was stating where I felt my assumptions were being led with attempt to have that in a question form that you could clarify if you wised to.

    Because you are not obligated to answer, I sort of followup with what I think the answer ought to be too, but it doesn't mean it wasn't a genuine question

    @arstechnica Not just big tech!

    devs or dev teams that aren't big enough to maintain apps in various app stores and wrestle with all the arbitrary approval hoops are also pissed. A lot of them just want PWAs to be a realistic option. Many already had working PWAs that will now be broken.

    Your focus on "big tech" sets up a Google & Meta vs Apple frame. but Apple vs the web and indie devs, while maybe less dramatic is probably where the real impact lies for most users and devs

Obviously most of them are over-hyped, but if just a couple major breakthroughs actually land, or if multiple alternatives to lithium ion that are somewhat on par with it do, then it feels like game over for fossil fuels.

    Ok, are there any folks out there who can help me with this annoying issue? On basically every browser I've tried, the text I've positioned under this icon on my home page (https://shellsharks.com) appears correctly. But on FF, it floats kinda above the icon. From what I've researched, there are some known issues with Firefox and the position:absolute tag but I just can't figure out a workaround/fix. What makes this more odd is I am doing what seems to be the exact same thing with the icon right next to this on my home page with text underneath and that one is working fine. Thanks for the help!!!

    Google witness accidentally blurts out that Apple gets 36% cut of Safari deal

    @arstechnica So one of the reason developers like @slightlyoff hypothesized that actual alternative browsers on iOS are not allowed was to protect App Store profits, and not to say that is wrong, but a 36% cut of Google's revenue from default placement in Safari has to factor in too!

    Though it only emphasizes how underfunded Safari development was for so long given how much revenue it was generating.
