Four years ago today, the CDC advised all Americans to wear masks in public to avoid spreading covid.

Trump immediately announced he would refuse to wear one, needlessly turning masking into a divisive partisan issue and contributing to countless avoidable deaths.

Something I've been struggling with for a while now...

The web used to excite me! I'd find writing code exciting, and new tech in general (not just the web) inspiring.

Now, if I take a break or go on vacation or whatever, the idea of the web and tech feels draining and completely uninteresting. It's what I generally want to escape from.

I can't really decide if I changed or the web did. I suspect a bit of both.

I've been fighting this fight—for a better, faster, simpler web—for damn near 10 years.

And things just keep getting worse.

I've seen so many folks who fight that same fight get burnt out, wreck their emotional health, and quit. Meanwhile the grifters and bandwagon hoppers flourish.

I just had to manually moderate @hypebot for the first time due to it reposting Holocaust denial by a well known "open/small web" advocate. Given how that person is on antisemitic rants for days now, they're blocked.

Biden wasn't my first choice in 2020, and his administration has made some egregious mistakes.

But he has been a far, far better president than I could have imagined. His administration's achievements have been extraordinary in all kinds of ways.

Now the nation is confronted by the Republicans' plain-as-day goal: undo all progressive policies and institute what amounts to fascism.

If I ran a news organization, we would have one primary agenda: being activists to save democracy.

Covid is killing a 9/11 worth of Americans every week or two and his administration is doing nothing about it. He's actively, enthusiastically funding genocide in Palestine. Women's reproductive rights have been gutted. People can't afford housing or food.

But he's not a fascist like the GOP candidates are.

That's a sad, low bar, but that's where we're at.

They seem to come out in election years, almost like a stealth campaign to elect Republicans.

I assume that there are people in that wave who are genuinely confused, but ignorance can also be dangerous.

It worked in 2000. Blaming the Dems helped elect George W.

@josephdickson Funny thing about America is that minimum wage hasn't provided a livable salary for decades, millions of people lack the income to build three months of savings, and even if you do, you're just one medical emergency away from losing all of it and more because our healthcare system is so fucked.

I don't believe this was Anna's original point, but this includes wearing masks at indoor events.

If you're on stage unmasked talking about accessibility, you're doing it wrong. You're not being inclusive to folks at high risk or with chronic illness (which includes everyone who's already had covid), and you're practicing eugenics, a key white supremacy policy.

Been using both Mastodon and Bluesky for a little bit now.

BlueSky feels a lot more like home than Mastodon. They’ve smoothed over so many of the rough edges that exist here.
