My partner has just asked me the magic words I've never thought I'd hear in the years we've been together: "How do I set as my default browser?". Bye and thank you <3

irfan , to Linux
@irfan@sakurajima.social avatar

I've been meaning to cut down my power usage without disrupting my lifestyle too much, the first thought is for me to "decommission" my HTPC which I keep running all day, asleep at best, just so it's ready for me when I want to sleep and need it to watch (so I can get to sleep lol).

The "easiest" replacement is get an based computer to take over its job. My first thought it should run on just bcos I'm most familiar with it and it's an open ecosystem so I should be able to do a ton of things w it - but I only have a Pi 4 and that thing honestly sucks at streaming so nope. Tried on it to get it running TV and while at first it seemed great, it ended up being quite a hassle and a mess so I ditched that.

Then my dad asked me to get an Android TV box/stick for his TV, and I got him the Mi Box S (2nd gen). After I set it up and used it for a bit, I honestly kinda liked it. Tried , , , etc. and they all ran great. The only downside I thought to this option is that I won't be able to watch YouTube with adblockers like I could with something like on a desktop.

THEN I quickly discovered the existence of and GOD what a lifesaver it's been. It works just like the official YouTube client with all the pages and algos you're familiar with when you've authenticated, it blocks YouTube ads, but also it supports right out of the box without needing to self-host or wtv so it could even block sponsor segments in video if you want. Even has some nice accessibility options too like changing the subtitle colours, size, and positioning which is great for me who watches vids in bed w no audio.

This rant ended up being very long unnecessarily lol but all in all, that removed the only dealbreaker for me on getting and using said TV box for myself - so I did and have been using for abt a week now. The box turns itself and my TV off automatically after 30 mins of inactivity and I can easily turn the box and the TV back on using just my remote which is nice. Idek what'd I need the HTPC for anymore honestly since I already have a to take over its job gaming wise much, much earlier.

I was upset when I learned that Perlis (Malaysia's smallest state) is actually bigger than Singapore, because people often joked that Perlis could only fit 8 citizens and it broke my immersion knowing/recognising that Singapore isn't that small (hence, Perlis too) lmao.

I feel like the only complaint I have of , is that I use text editors like Kate/ a lot for searching certain keywords - this is a common use case I'm sure.

On VS Code this is easy, on Kate it can/should be too... except the arrows to go to the next or earlier iteration keeps moving when it reaches the very first iteration or very last iteration. It's such a little thing but genuinely frustrating - only bcos it is a very common use case when you're using a text editor like it.

I find it funny that is collaborating with to make a handheld called and it's not but just yet another handheld like the rest of the fleet? Isn't Orange Pi a popular alternative to that sells ARM-based SBCs?

Power to them I guess but I definitely would love to see more ARM-based gaming handhelds (not , we have a ton of those already) available, no matter how "not ready" ARM + Linux gaming is. Software support could always be improved and worked on later down the road once the hardware is available to target.

@shanmukhateja yes, software not being ready on top of also hardware is why we don't have many or any of them yet - just would have expected somebody like Orange Pi to be the one doing it if they were building one anyway - not build one that's x86. It's a lil unexpected, for sure.

This is wonderful news but seeing the list of patrons, why does not join the sponsorship programme though? - I know (or I think at least) that they often/occasionally sponsor (as an org, or devs) to do some work for them, and I'm not denying that they contribute a lot through funds/code to /, but seeing that the comes shipped with (which I still think is a really smart decision) and since Plasma is a huge part of the Steam Deck (literally half of the software exp), it'd be great to see Valve commit to a recurring sponsorship programme to the KDE folks.

They certainly have the money for it, surely. I hope this will be true someday.

The thing I hate most about is how simple problems which should have simple solutions on any other operating system almost ALWAYS have no solution at all. The Forum's super helpful too, can always count on them to give you the "welp, you should've not had that problem in the first place - too bad <3".

In this case, the context is: you cannot copy over your backups from a drive to another - which seems like a very fucking logical thing to do for when your backup is growing or your drive is aging. The solution provided by everyone is to just "start a new backup on the new drive" or "you should've used a bigger drive 3 years ago". These fucking bitches.

@NullNowhere that sounds like a nightmare, and I absolutely could relate to everything you’ve said - ESPECIALLY how the “workarounds” always (at least supposedly) work on older versions. I’ve encountered too many times when “oh I’m literally just 1 macOS version later than a version that would’ve worked fine or been able to fix this issue I’m having”. It almost feels like every update is meant to make ur device worse and less reliable. Heck, even this Time Machine problem I’m having too was a non-issue prior to Big Sur (Catalina or Mojave). This has always been my experience using macOS for years and it’s certainly have taught me to be so reluctant to push the update button.

thinking abt it, all the women that I know of from my mom's side of the family are superwomen, the lot. My mom, my aunt, my grandaunts, they're all genuinely a different breed lol.

i remember being pretty upset when i was a kid that i couldn't carry on the Raden name since it isn't my dad with the name but my mom, (but i'd be lying if i say i'm not partially glad now that i've grown up that my name isn't that striking and long hehe).

I'm getting a history lesson from my mom abt Kartini and the rest bcos I just seem to never remember and always ask the same qs every year haha

irfan OP ,
@irfan@sakurajima.social avatar

TIL there's a family register called "Perkumpulan Mangkunegaran Surakarta" dating back to my ancestors' time with details of all members of my family - including my own name which is pretty cool.

Referring to that, my Eyang Kakung (grandpa)'s father is 10 years younger than Kartini and are ~cousins. So Raden Adjeng Kartini's my Eyang Kung's (second) aunt, my mom's grand aunt, and my great grand aunt. She died when she was ~25 in 1904, while my Eyang Kung was born in 1931 so they've never been in the same era.

I really should care more about family history.

Imagine getting the cheapest, secondhand car you could find with the sole purpose of leaving it at a free parking spot nearest to your destination MRT station i.e. your workplace.

Then you can commute daily to your nearby home MRT station (through various means i.e. your "primary" car, hitching a ride with someone at your home, feeder bus), take the MRT to your destination station i.e. workplace, then take that car on the short drive to/from your workplace.

Heck you could even share this car with your colleagues or whomever as like a personal bus, granted, they're on a similar schedule.

Dk if this is a big brain move, T20 move, or something else entirely.

irfan OP ,
@irfan@sakurajima.social avatar

I'd suggest leaving a bicycle instead but I feel like you could die from that in Malaysia either due to heat stroke bcos of the complete absence of tree canopies, or just unsafe roads for cyclists and pedestrians lol.

You could also just take the bus (IF that's even an option), but I don't think that's really the Malaysian mindset (perhaps unless your daily commute is right in the centre of KL, but unlikely) bcos of the reliance on a public service - which often are simply unreliable. You could argue this for trains too, but trains at least aren't affected by Malaysian roads that are not only prone to heavy traffic but also floods caused by heavy rain and piss poor drainage system.

irfan OP ,
@irfan@sakurajima.social avatar

@anianimalsmoe oh yes, I agree not to do this as your primary mode of transportation - theft aside, cars are incredibly expensive to maintain so having it not break is too important.

This (totally not serious) situation I'm theorising is a lot more specific whereby the distance between the destination train station and the actual destination are close enough for a really short drive (~1-2km one way), but long/unsafe enough to not make walking viable. So that cheap car really is used for the very short last mile connection to your destination, and from said destination back to the train station - daily.

but yea haha how "brilliant" this idea is ultimately boils down to just how "cheap" really can you get this car for and how low maintenance it is.

irfan OP ,
@irfan@sakurajima.social avatar

@anianimalsmoe oh yes, this is also another very important bit which again applies for this very particular scenario I have in mind (for the longest time, to not make me consider otherwise), but unlikely to be applicable in most other scenarios haha.

All in all, the root issue is still how bad the last mile connectivity is here for people who rely on public transportation. In the end, you're almost always forced to get an e-hailing service (i.e. Grab, Uber) to get to your destination from the nearest train station - which is ofc, expensive, which incentivises you to just drive yourself, which then just causes heavy traffic.

Such a pain in the ass. Being in a country that does not expect you to own a car and drive is truly a privilege.

irfan OP ,
@irfan@sakurajima.social avatar

@rakyat DEFINITELY!! I've been seeing some really neat proposals by our own people on slowly fixing this for some stations - it's clear that our enthusiasts are more brilliant than anyone with actual power/resources, they just need someone to listen to them (which is somehow so hard to do).

I think the news about essentially "reinventing" cable channels again into their streaming service, is pretty hilarious, though I'm not exactly surprised by that since I too honestly have been wanting such a feature on or for really long time.

The idea is, you could still watch things on demand, unlike cable channels of old, but you could also just tune in to a channel and be "served" different things to watch by episode, or by movie, based on what is available. That'd be perfect when you just want to leave the TV on and have it play random stuffs all day.

Southeast Asian Muslims also retain the practice of cemetery caretaking without necessarily framing it as ancestor worship. As such, there are some customs we do for the dead that isn't always analogous elsewhere like doing the 40-day tahlil (sort of a wake 40 days after death) but since it's in keeping with the Islamic practice of respecting your elders and maintaining familial relations, there's historical and cultural continuity.

As such, while it doesn't have the force of religious law, Muslims here tend to visit family graves on Eid (usual al-Fitr but also al-Adha) to clean, and pray over the dead. But we don't have family plots so one fact about city Muslims these days is since the system is first-come-first-served, you likely have to visit multiple cemeteries to get to all of your family.

Anyway, climate change means I didn't need a hijab as all my UV covering sufficed.

irfan ,
@irfan@sakurajima.social avatar

@cendawanita what a genuinely nice photo, haha. My family used to go every year but have stopped for quite a long time unfortunately, prolly cos my parents also tak larat ady. We’ve 2 sites to go to with 3 graves in total in KL, and 1 site in Batu Pahat which has another ~2 graves.

irfan ,
@irfan@sakurajima.social avatar

@cendawanita for sure hahaha. speaking abt these 3 sites tho, dk what I’m thinking “reviewing” these sites haha but the one I liked the most is the 1 in Taman Ehsan - that one is like pretty huge and doesn’t sit on flat ground and the graves are sort of “planted” on a bit of a hill kind of. It also has a lot of tall trees around so it really gives some “FRIM” vibes and is pretty shady.

Another in Sungai Besi is like meh haha, a “proper” cemetery but pretty barren and surrounded by wire fences - also very hot cos of the lack of trees. The one in Batu Pahat is the simplest of them all, just a small flat site surrounded by lots and lots of trees, by the roadside and next to a large river. The whole area is quite rundown, with overgrown grass and whatnot but people do help tidy them up when they visit. It’s peaceful at least… until the moment someone decided it was a good/respectful idea to put in one of those… “fake”, empty, white building that has bird calls on loudspeaker to attract birds to nest there - if you know what I mean? That was horrible lol.

I love how on when you intend to move a bunch of files to a folder, and when one file with the same name already exists in the destination, you're only given the option to stop the entire thing, to replace the existing file, or move anyway under a different name. Not a single option that just... idk... skip moving that one (or however many affected) file maybe? The best thing is, that stop option, the dialog that asks you gives you a checkmark option to "Apply to all" (unchecked by default) - bcos of this, a user unfamiliar with 's brilliance might assume that "stop" simply means "skip" commonly found on other OS-es including and for file operations such as moving/copying, 'cept not, "stop" literally just stops doing anything.

Oh, also, you can't even enjoy what you have found to be so common such as doing a shift-click selection on Finder... unless you happen to be in the right "view" mode. That simple thing couldn't even just... work. I honestly can go on and on about how slow that piece of shit is at performing searches or copying/moving files, or how modifying all the ridiculous preferences take forever bcos they hide in multiple, nonsensical places when on for example, you get one nice menu with sensible tabs and options where you could do wtv needs doing in ~1 minute. Heck, even setting the default app to be used to open a certain file type requires a hidden shortcut that then opens up a stupid looking window at the edge of your screen with tiny af buttons and GOSH I CAN GO ON FOREVER.

Fuck Finder, honestly. I'd take that ugly ass anyday of the week if it means I don't have to deal with Finder. Thank god I'm a Linux user, blessed with 's Dolphin. I'm almost certain only hires interns for anything software over there.
