On Android, using an app like DuckDuckGo or TrackerControl is huge for protecting your data in other apps

lone_faerie ,

Not the search engine. The Android app has a feature called App Tracking Protection that blocks trackers in other apps, akin to PiHole, but run on the device.

If you abuse someone for decades, they're going to bite back eventually

lone_faerie ,

This is also why people think being trans is a "new" thing. The Institute For Sexuality was the first and only place performing research and on trans people and offering gender affirming care. When the Nazi book burnings happened, they burned the entirety of the world's research on trans people.

lone_faerie ,

The last couple of days have been a hell of a month.

I feel that in my soul

lone_faerie ,

The best discovery in my life is something called the Elephant Ear. It's a squirt bottle for getting water behind your earwax and pushing it out from the back

lone_faerie ,

As a kid, I had really bad earwax and had to go to the doctor because it was affecting my hearing. They used this and it was life changing.

Home Assistant. I wouldn't use it just for calendars, but I already had it set up for home automation and calendars are a built in feature.

lone_faerie ,

The Local Calendar integration stores the calendar on the server running Home Assistant, so as long as you can access the server remotely, you should be able to access it through the Home Assistant app. If you want it stored offline on a mobile device, there's also an integration for calendars stored in a .ics file which you could sync with something like syncthing.

Mine is a toaster oven/air fryer combo and it's amazing. I don't even touch my normal oven anymore.

Ninja Foodi SP101

lone_faerie ,

It actually flips up, so it takes up minimal counter space when you're not using it

lone_faerie ,

It's still all stored as YAML, there's just a lot more help on the frontend

lone_faerie ,

That's true, I was thinking more about automations and scripts, which are still stored as YAML

lone_faerie ,

Oh wow, that must've been painful

What is a gender neutral replacement for man, guys, buddy, etc?

So I've realized that in conversations I'll use traditional terms for men as general terms for all genders, both singularly and for groups. I always mean it well, but I've been thinking that it's not as inclusive to women/trans people....

lone_faerie ,

KYC is "Know Your Customer" aka identity verification. Usually it would be something like a selfie of you holding your ID, proving you are the person on the card. If you think getting your identity stolen from one picture is bad, wait until you learn about social security numbers. It's a 9 digit number based on publicly available information about you that is incredibly easy to figure out, and are used as like the defacto way of verifying your identity in the US, when that was never its intended purpose.

lone_faerie ,

I think they work, but will quickly be defeated. Facial recognition is nothing more than advanced pattern recognition. This clothing works by confusing the pattern the AI is trained to recognize. That may work with current models, but all it takes is to train the AI on what this adversarial clothing looks like so it can differentiate it from actual faces.

lone_faerie ,

That's certainly true. I think the more effective method is using makeup/face paint instead. But any of these methods are designed to confuse AI, they fall apart as soon as there's any human intervention.

lone_faerie ,

Building a 3d printer is really its own hobby. You don't build a 3d printer because you want to print stuff, you build one because you want something to tinker with

lone_faerie ,

Well that sounds like price gouging with extra steps

Israeli ground offensive in Rafah ‘aimed at making Gaza uninhabitable’ ( www.france24.com )

Israel has announced plans to launch a full-scale offensive on the town of Rafah in the southern Gaza strip, claiming it is the only way to "completely destroy" Hamas. But according to former French military officer and author Guillaume Ancel, a large-scale military operation in the city that is now host to half of Gaza’s...

The offered a deal to release the hostages if there's a ceasefire and Israel rejected it. Israel doesn't care about the hostages, they care about ethnic cleansing

Home Assistant actually has its own voice control now. You can even set it up to trigger on the wake word "Alexa"

lone_faerie ,

Project 2025 goes a lot farther than just climate change. It's the plan to set Trump up as a dictator. It's like the modern day Mein Kampf

lone_faerie ,

The majority of people would likely be are feudal peasants, working under a warmonger family that owns the sustaining land by force. No upward mobility except through bloodshed.

It's literally just the effects of estrogen. This post is essentially the forms you're given for informed consent, just in meme format

lone_faerie ,

I started HRT at 22 and it absolutely made my hips wider. And yeah estrogen would tank a cis man's mood, good thing it's not for them. The same way testosterone can make trans women dysphoric, estrogen would make cis men dysphoric. And HRT may not directly affect your mannerisms, but the mental changes and being happier certainly will.

It's just a silly little meme, it doesn't need to be a peer reviewed scientific paper. Let OP share the enjoyment E brings her.

CheesyCheese1 [She/her]

All I see here is a real woman

lone_faerie ,

Why shouldn't they? The city government represents the citizens of that city, who are calling for a ceasefire. They're saying "we hear you and agree there should be a ceasefire"

lone_faerie ,

Every social media site does the exact same thing. There was just an article on here the other day about the US government buying people's information from data brokers. How is that any different? Meta has been censoring anything pro-Palestine, Twitter is a breeding ground for Nazis, YouTube picks and chooses what counts as "mature content" aka what gets monetized. The way TikTok treats privacy is how every social media platform treats it, it has nothing to do with them being Chinese.

lone_faerie ,

There was literally a Senate hearing today about KOSA, the bill allowing the US government the legal grounds to control sources of information on the internet. So no, they aren't totally different things.

And I was specifically referring to this part that OP said:

I heard that the Chinese Communist Party was collecting some worrying amount of information on their user base

The only difference between the Chinese government and the US government collecting information is that the US goes through a middleman who aggregates it from multiple sources.

Meta/Twitter/YouTube have everything to do with this because they're doing the exact same thing. Do I need to mention the numerous times Facebook has been sued for illegal data collection? Cambridge Analytica ring a bell?

lone_faerie ,

It's literally just racism. People act like other social media platforms aren't just as bad about privacy because they sell your information instead of giving it directly to the government.

Gen Z boys and men more likely than baby boomers to believe feminism harmful, says poll ( www.theguardian.com )

Boys and men from generation Z are more likely than older baby boomers to believe that feminism has done more harm than good, according to research that shows a “real risk of fractious division among this coming generation”....

lone_faerie ,

Feminism is leftism and leftism is feminism. It's always been that way because it's all about the same issue, equality. Women's rights, civil rights, trans rights, they're all fighting for the same thing. One of my favorite quotes comes from Fannie Lou Hamer, civil rights and women's rights activist, "Nobody's free until everybody's free"

lone_faerie ,

It's like the $5 foot long, which was neither $5 or a foot long

lone_faerie ,

Most ISPs are also the default DNS resolver for a lot of people, so they see the domain you're requesting an IP for.

Chromecast with Google TV is now serving full-screen, auto-playing Chicken Tender Wrap ads ( www.androidauthority.com )

Reddit users thevincentasteroid and MMD3_ posted about an auto-playing video ad (with sound) on the home screen. The ad is for Chicken Tender Wraps from Carl’s Jr. When it begins auto-playing, it pushes all the other UI elements out of focus and goes almost full-screen, returning to the home screen after it has played through...

lone_faerie ,

There are apps that circumvent DNS blocking. They hard code the DNS server into the app, so instead of making requests to your set DNS, they make them directly to, say, Google's DNS (8.8.8.8)

lone_faerie ,

Honestly, I'm surprised it works too, especially for apps like the launcher. I guess we can thank the engineers for taking the easy route

lone_faerie ,

Rerouting DNS requests to your Pi Hole is the solution to this, unfortunately not every router supports this. My Netgear router, for example, doesn't have the option, and of course I ended up getting a model that doesn't work with custom firmware. I'm considering setting up a Raspberry Pi as the gateway for my network so I can do stuff like this.
