Time for this week's #Linux and #OpenSource News video!
In this one, we have the law forcing #TikTok to sell or be banned in the US being passed, we have an article explaining why #Google Search is so much worse these days, we have the release of #Fedora 40 and #Ubuntu 24.04, and #Nvidia contributing to the NVK open source drivers:
Just bought an #Intel Arc 310, the lowest end Intel GPU. I've had an #nvidia card before that but it's too much of a trouble with #Linux. Except the artifacts in #Fedora 40 under #Wayland with the official driver, it doesn't wake up from sleep after 2-3 sleep-wake up cycles. The #Nouveau driver is too slow for 2D/video (and buggy with #Blender 's official appimage), so I decided, that's it, time to move on from nVidia.
Also decided to try out #Debian#Trixie as my main distro to replace Fedora.
@gamingonlinux I recently bought an #Asus#Zephyrus G14, hoping to have one laptop for work, hobbies and light gaming (dual-boot). How disappointed I was to find that #Linux is almost unusable on this machine (fuck #Nvidia). I tried to adapt to #Windows because most of the software I need is available for Windows. But Windows is so disgusting, I don't understand how anyone can choose Windows. Linux desktop environments are simply superior to Windows (or #MacOS for that matter). Linux FTW.
Photo library Getty Images has entered into a deal with Nvidia to create AI tools trained on its copyright-protected stock images. Getty's CEO, Craig Peters, talked to the Hollywood Reporter about why he thinks this could be beneficial to creators, how the material created by this system will be labeled, copyright systems, and who gets paid.
Accidentally updated my entire system yesterday (instead of just my #Flatpak apps which I normally do for regular updates), which also updated #KDEPlasma to version 6. The first exp was broken, no doubt, since it defaults to #Wayland, which isn't great for my #NVIDIA GPU (the entire desktop was slow to a crawl, like it's being rendered using my CPU). Even after switching to #X11 tho, while that slowness quickly disappeared, I found that there are some widgets I rely on that are broken on Plasma 6, and even my Plank dock wasn't behaving properly (i.e. not identifying existing, open windows).
Thankfully, years ago when I first moved to #Linux full time, I had set up #Timeshift to create a system backup every midnight and every pre-update in case an update goes wrong (like in this case). Never had the need for it, and never bothered to test if the backups it made would work fine, until yesterday. Launched the Timeshift app on my desktop (didn't even need a safe/live environment), selected one of the recent backups, click the restore option and it was done in a second and prompted me to restart. Restarted my PC, and I was then back in my perfectly stable system on Plasma 5.27 like nothing happened <3
So please, for system backup purposes - use Timeshift! For personal file (user home directory) backups, use a #Borg based backup solution such as #Vorta (which I also absolutely love). They absolutely will save your ass someday!
@actuallyautistic I have had a lot of people say the whole "...aren't we all a little autistic?" And I have a hard time explaining that that's not the case. While I don't have a formal diagnosis, I'm pretty certain that my mom is autistic, and if/when I get evaluated, I probably would be too :blobfoxlaugh:
I'm not thrilled by having to update Fedora every six months, especially on other people's systems, and especially since upgrades aren't always painless (particularly if you have Nvidia graphics).
Yeah, #Flatpak is bloated, but I only need it for one package, so it's tolerable.
We're no longer talking about autism, so I'll drop the ActuallyAutistic group next time I reply. Because of the way federation works, that'll reduce my reach, but fair's fair.
