Earlier this week, Scarlett Johansson released a statement that said she had been approached by OpenAI’s founder Sam Altman to voice a ChatGPT persona. The actress, who famously voiced an AI assistant in the 2013 film "Her," she said no, but OpenAI went ahead and released "Sky" anyway — a chatbot which Johansson herself stated sounded “eerily similar” to her.

The actress has hired legal counsel and demanded an explanation, but could she take it further and does she have a case? @WIRED has spoken to lawyers to find out how this could all play out in court.

Scarlett Johansson has dealt with deepfakes, robots in her likeness, and now OpenAI mimicking her voice because she wouldn’t license it.

She’s used to fighting these battles. The spotlight she casts on generative AI may finally prompt regulatory action.

they have the ability to take a few clips of anyone's voice, and make us say anything

that's their whole technology. that's their whole reason for being

but instead of using the tech they are so proud of, they hired a voice actress?

but they folded when pushed the issue

    so there is no actress

    they modified scarlett's voice

    (I'm just speculating)

A female computational neuroscience and machine learning expert took to X at the weekend to describe a “dark side” of the startup culture in Silicon Valley.

Sonia Joseph alleged that a culture of sexual coercion has taken hold of San Francisco’s community housing tech scene, with “heavy LSD use” and “sex parties held by mainly male tech and entrepreneurial elites that involve mock-violent role playing with female participants.”

In particular, “early OpenAI employees” were referenced by Joseph, as well as their friends and “adjacent entrepreneurs.” Salon has more.

It’s been a rough week for OpenAI. Ever since the launch of its latest AI language model, GPT-4o, it has been hit by controversy after controversy — perhaps a sign of just how much public visibility the company is starting to get.

@arstechnica runs through a week of bad news, rumors and ridicule for one of AI’s most prominent and influential companies.

    antijingoist OP ,
    @antijingoist@hackers.town avatar

Looking through iTerm source code since I'm tired and the kid got his tooth pulled.

It sends over data to OpenAI when the "Codesierge" tool is opened and you send over a chat, regardless of key validity.

It will then send over the contents of your terminal screen if the "run commands automatically" option is enabled. You can try to reengineer the prompt to remove information about your computer but that setting is ignored.

OMG the thugs at decided they better steal Scarlett Johannson's voice after she declined a contract to get voiced by her.

Two days before launch of she was approached again by Sam Altman, Head of Crooks. And refused again.

To then find her overly uplifting, encouraging, positive sounding voice creating the uncanny valley in these demo's.

When approaching OpenAI by her legal councilors the voice was suddenly pulled.

Pour one out for OpenAI's super alignment team, for it is no more.

Some parting words from the Jan Leike, the team's co-lead, before departing:

"We are long overdue in getting incredibly serious about the implications of AGI.

We must prioritize preparing for them as best we can.

Only then can we ensure AGI benefits all of humanity."

When OpenAI created its “Superalignment” team in summer 2023, the goal was for it to “steer and control future AI systems that could be so powerful they could lead to human extinction,” reports @engadget. “Less than a year later, that team is dead.”

Jan Leike, one of the team’s leaders, who quit earlier this week, posted a scathing statement on X showing the internal tensions between the safety team and the wider company.

“OpenAI is shouldering an enormous responsibility on behalf of all of humanity,” he wrote. “But over the past years, safety culture and processes have taken a backseat to shiny products.” Engadget has more.

OpenAI has announced the launch of GPT-4o, an iteration of its GPT-4 model that powers ChatGPT — and the rollout starts today.

The latest update “is much faster” and improves “capabilities across text, vision, and audio,” according to a livestream announcement by OpenAI CTO Mira Murati. It’ll be free for all users, and paid users will continue to “have up to five times the capacity limits” of free users, reports @theverge.

Casual non-techy coworkers yesterday were talking about using excel reports to analyze data & turns out two of the people use to know how to do something in excel.

So, before this stuff, if you were like, "how do I do X in Excel" in google, you'd get a bunch of hits and then have to wade through the results to see which link was actually what you were looking for, then test out if their solution works.

"Consumer AI is just the new search" anecdote: [3/3]

There are over 1 billion websites with over 30 billion web pages out there on the internet and regular search absolutely sucks now. It's no wonder normies are seeing as magic when it can take 30 billion+ results and give you one answer that's most likely what you are looking for.

    Search 3.0

And whoever wins will be the new Google.
