@kimerwinbc You might want to try an alternative UI for Mastodon that is available on this server, #Phanpy. I prefer the ordering of the posts on Phanpy over the regular UI. https://phanpy.hear-me.social
@Miro_Collas@dilmandila There’s an alternative web frontend for Mastodon called phanpy that has a useful solution. It’s a called „catch up“ and shows you a list of posts from the past x hours that you can sort by number of replies or boosts. I found it useful to read up on posts from other time zones that were written while I was asleep.
The Catch-Up Feed in #Phanpy is brilliant. Looking at screenshots, I was worried it was going to be super confusing...but, it's honestly a lightning-fast way to catch up on everything.
Social media without quoted posts is like liquor without alcohol. It just doesn’t have the same impact on me. I am still mystified about why anyone strenuously defends their absence. It sounded reactionary the first time I heard the objections, and it’s never gotten better since.
@mike@shoq it’s virtually here, in all major 3rd apps, and in #phanpy for web UX….just waiting for the implementation inside Mastodon itself….They seem to be working on something with more permissions on it, but we will see….
After the disruption from the nightly build on Monday, I began experimenting with both @phanpy and @elk, alternate Web interfaces for Mastodon.
While #Elk is quite nice with always-available mouse-based back navigation, it doesn't seem to support either multi-column views or auto-refreshing timelines.
So, #Phanpy is a much better fit for my use case. However, it suffers the same limitation sorting notifications as the current unfixed nightly build, i.e. no quick-access filter bar.
And while #Phanpy allows creating a shortcut/pinned column for most views, including an individual List, for some mind-numbing reason Phanpy does NOT allow the Lists view itself (i.e. the view of all your lists) to be a shortcut/pinned column. 🤦♀️
Why is this important? Because if you have a shitload of lists like I do, then going back and forth from the master Lists view is something you do A LOT. And you don't want to shortcut/pin that many single List views.
With #Phanpy, liking or boosting posts---as you know, something I might do once or twice a day 🙄---requires multiple clicks since Phanpy's timeline post preview tiles don't have affordances for either task. 🤦♀️
You need to right click on a post preview for a context menu or left click to get an enlarged view in order to like or boost. And for boosting you need another click to select between a normal boost and a quote post. This dance is... very inconvenient. 😬
I've changed from using the regular mastodon website on my desktop to using https://phanpy.social/. #phanpy looks better and has a cool boost carousel that makes it easier to identify/skip boosts. Also, boosts and followed hashtags have a subtlety different background color. Very nice. It also works well on my phone.
Wow, this looks really cool!! @phanpy has a new feature called #CatchUp that I only found just now. It shows a really nice-looking overview over the last hours in your timeline. You can filter by original posts, boosts, followed hashtags etc.
And it even gives you the most mentioned links in that time period. I'm pretty sure, that this will now become my go-to feature in the morning to get up to speed.
You can try it out in your browser.
