Some landscape renders made with Bryce 3D come by on Mastodon this week and it reminded me of the first landscape renderer I used: VistaPro.
It was was one of many #DOS programs on the "Virtual Reality Madness" compilation disc from 1993. VistaPro also came out on Amiga and Mac OS, and later Windows.
VistaPro (v1.01) didn't give you much control but the results looked stunning then, if you allowed your computer to render the highest quality image for a few hours that is.

Roku has become just another arrogant tech company, but this stunt -- locking up people's "smart" TVs until they agree to regressive new terms of service -- is disgusting even for this crowd.
Never buy Roku or any company that withholds the use of a product you have purchased
It should be illegal
Car manufacturers have started this too, charging fees to access services that you have already paid for by purchasing the vehicle, such as a monthly “subscription” to actually use your heated seats etc.
"Over the past week or so there has been a serious spam problem hitting mastodon and rest of the fediverse especially misskey over on the japanese side of things and the story behind it is absolutely wild."
I've got the lever issue bandaided for now, but it looks like the onboard video is toast. I can hear it cycling up and POSTing, but no error beeps, no display.
I seem to remember the video being iffy the last time this board was powered up. I'll clean up the board, re-seat connectors and modules, see if that changes it, but otherwise maybe looking for a new video card.
This should boot up on your run of the mill S-100 based system with an 8086. Maybe an 8080 too? Also, it reportedly runs under #simH as a virtual machine. According to some, this is the earliest known version of #86-DOS, not long after replacing #QDOS as its successor....
The 1997 MMO The Realm is back. It was originally published and run by Sierra and the rights have been sold to various companies since then. A new publisher has gained the rights and has launched the game again. The article goes into more detail about how the previous owner mismanaged the license and what the relaunch means for the game. I’ve never played it before but it makes me happy whenever I see a MMO that has kept going even after decades.
DOSember starts next month! DOScember is an event where streamers play tons of DOS games. It’s a fun way to watch people play classic games and the people involved are very lovely.
And to end with some self promotion, the next DOS Games Jam starts next month. Come join if you want to try making a game in a casual, unranked jam. Even if you have no interest in making a game, the page for the jam links to entries from previous jams if you want to discover some new DOS games.
Has any #mastoadmin an idea what is going on with climatejustice.social?
My sidekiq dead jobs is full of failed contacts with them, and the site seems to be totally unresponsive from my home connection as well. #DOS attack or something going on?
I stumbled across this the other day - Old DOS Never dies... ( ia801209.us.archive.org )
