Tomorrow, Apple will shut down My Photo Stream, after 12 years of service.

I wrote the code that ran the service on iOS devices back in 2010, and it has been faithfully syncing hundreds of millions of photos between iPhones and iPads and their respective macOS Photo libraries for more than a decade. It survived the introduction to iCloud’s Shared Photo Streams (I also wrote its client software), the shutdown of Aperture, and the introduction of iCloud Photo Library. And today, we finally bid it goodbye.

It’s been a good 12 years. 1000 photos, hosted for 30 days, for free, so you can save them on your Mac—those were the days, eh?

I’m daily amazed by just how bad the User Experience (UX) is for Apple’s feature, as a parent or guardian. The whole process of synchronizing Downtime and App Limits across devices for multiple family members is incredibly broken.

I don’t know how they built it, but it acts like every device is broadcasting its current knowledge of limits to every other device. And whichever device broadcasts last, “wins”. And if the device that broadcasts last is out of date? It just overwrites everything newer, whatever limits you just changed.

Wild how we’re having conversations like “Android vs iPhone” or “Apple Maps vs Google Maps” in 2023. I thought this was settled ages ago.

Get what works for you. But for me personally, I’ll never choose a platform whose entire existence is predicated on collecting every ounce of user data it can ascertain. Android and Google Maps both suffer from the same problems: too busy, too impersonal, and too desperate.

I’m happy with my iPhone because it’s just me. I can make it become whatever phone I need in the moment thanks to Focus Modes controlling my Lock Screen and Home Screen. The apps and services I take advantage of show the relevant information I need based on that Focus. And let’s not even start on how polished Apple’s widget system is compared to Android.

I’ll happily argue iPhone and iOS is more personal, more customizable, and more private and secure than Android.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy an Android phone if you want one. 🤷‍♂️

If you own an iPhone and care to share photos with anyone, go ahead and switch off of the lamentably default HEIC image format back to JPEG, in the settings.

Thanks.

Anyone on or or using the Freeform app on a routine basis?

It feels like this should be a great collaborative whiteboarding app.

But I don't know anyone using this, so is this just my bubble not talking about it as much, or is the app lacking in some regard?

products are better but I hate being controlled or forced to pay more (way more) for things offered at a better price by other brands. 😁

Brand prestige doesn't affect me at all. If a shiny brand doesn't give me what I want, it is out of there, no matter how classy it is.

I have jumped ship. I've been using Android phones for the last 8 years or so, decided it was time to jump over to Apple land.

Ain't gonna lie. This iPhone 14 is slick as hell. Like, literally and figuratively. How do people use these things without a friction case?

Still learning the UI differences, but mostly the transition has been smooth.

A few days ago I was complaining about my front camera getting a purple vignette around the edges. I just checked again now and it looks like this 😭 my front camera is well and properly screwed, and I’m not sure if something caused it or it’s just… died.

Silver lining? I guess it matches my latest website design I’m working on. 🧐

When I expressed my concern, the feller behind the counter said, “It’s just like the biometric scanner on your …”

“Um, no, it’s not,” I replied. “Because THAT biometric is on MY device, not yours.”

He shrugged in response.

I don’t advise you to go this route, friends. Not until there are more and safeguards in place to protect .
