Since the war on Gaza began, all of the enclave’s schools have closed, leaving hundreds of thousands of Palestinian children without formal schooling or a safe place to stay.

For children already traumatised by war, losing out on education during key years of their development is another devastating blow.

70 years ago, the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education led to the desegregation of schools. However this also led to thousands of Black teachers losing their jobs. "Prior to 1954, there were about 82,000 Black teachers in the United States," write a team of academics for @TheConversationUS. "A decade later, with hundreds of segregated schools closing, more than 38,000 Black teachers had been fired by white school leaders." Read more about the importance of Black teachers and why 70 years after Brown, school educators are still mostly white.

Courtney Gore, the co-host of a right-wing online talk show, won a seat on a Texas school board on the basis that she would undo leftist indoctrination and get rid of educational materials with inappropriate messages about sexuality and race. Then she took office and actually read the curriculum, finding that the subject matter simply taught children “how to be a good friend, a good human.” The Texas Tribune talked to her about why she ran for office, what she thinks is behind the push to take over school boards, and the backlash she's faced since speaking out against the ultra-right element of the Republican party.

This story must be told

Two schoolgirls stand on the ruins of their school on Feb. 12, 2016, in Dzita, Ghana. The Dzita EP Basic School's four compounds fell victim to coastal erosion during the region's rainy season.

"To me this scene summarises it all: it captures the violence of nature that rebels, the powerlessness of the local communities and the lack of hope and future of the coming generations."

    Scholasticide

Israel had destroyed literally all universities in Gaza and damaged over 400 schools. Lest we forget also Israel's deliberate targeting of university professors and academics.

Human rights groups say Israel could be committing scholasticide.

Dana is excited to be attending lessons after her education was cut short due to the war in Gaza.

"I am a little Palestinian girl, I have a good heart, I have a good spirit, and harm no-one," she sings to her peers, as they clap for her performance.
The class holds extra significance for Dana after she was recently released from hospital following an Israeli air strike.
She was injured in the attack, which also killed her brother.

In Gaza, makeshift schools have been set up for children denied an education due to war

The lessons take place in the sand among the tent camps in the city of Rafah, in southern Gaza.

There are no uniforms, backpacks, desks or lunch boxes.

"Our objective is to provide an escape for those beautiful children who suffer from destruction, bombardments."

"Children of Palestine want to be educated, they need creativity and diversity."

The is just full of smartasses really, they thought that by moving classes in 2020 to August they can minimize the disruption in education brought by .

It did minimize it alright, but only for 2020 and 2021. Eventually we will have to return to face-to-face classes, which we did starting 2022 IIRC. Their hubris in keeping children in classes no matter what didn't make them think that we are a tropical country; that their foresight-less act means there will still be classes in April and May, the hottest months in this climate. They're now forced to move it back to June which they will have to do gradually. This brings more disruption as it means students will only get a one-month long vacation instead of the usual two, and the moving schedules mean planning school events far ahead become less certain.

Very cool DepEd. Truly the brightest and bestest of the country. :kokoro_yes: :reimu_sigh:

In "Never Been Kissed" Drew Barrymore went undercover as a high-school student; hilarity (and romance) ensued. But when 26-year-old San Francisco Chronicle reporter Shann Nix (now Jones) took on an assignment to do the same in 1992, the outcome was a little more complicated. Peter Hartlaub spoke to her editor, fellow kids, school counselor, and Jones, currently a goat farmer in rural Wales, about what happened then, and how they feel now.

As lawmakers around the U.S. ban books, states enact legislation limiting how sexual orientation and gender identity are taught in schools, and companies reduce their DEI efforts, some are going the other way. Washington state's Gov. Jay Inslee, a Democrat, has recently signed a law including a mandate for public schools to teach LGBTQ+ history, joining California, New Jersey, Colorado, Oregon, Nevada and Illinois, which have similar legislation. Here's more from NBC.
