U.S. President Joe Biden is set to give a commencement address this Sunday at Morehouse, a historically Black college in Atlanta that counts Dr. Martin Luther King among its graduates. But the president’s coming speech has sparked consternation from the graduating class. Some students see Biden using Morehouse as a political tool for Black votes in an election year, and others are considering ways to protest his Middle East policies without overshadowing the celebration for their families. There’s a new playbook being written right now when it comes to the future of social media. The early-mover advantage is still in effect, and there’s a lot to figure out. Gone are opaque algorithms and the whims of any single company.

The fediverse represents a chance for quality journalism to shine again.

We talked to two leaders at fedi-forward publications — @TheConversationUS's @BostonAbrams, and @404mediaco's @jasonkoebler — about why they’re investing in the open social web, what they’ve learned so far, and their advice for other publishers just getting started.

Gibraltar residents came out overwhelmingly against leaving the E.U., with 96% of people voting to remain. The vote revived historic tensions between Spain and Britain over the territory, with Madrid calling for Gibraltar’s “decolonization.” Read more from Euronews.

U.S. President Joe Biden and former U.S. President and presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump have agreed to debate in two televised broadcasts. These events are usually organized by the Commission on Presidential Debates, but the Biden and Trump teams directly negotiated the terms of the showdowns. The Biden campaign says the Commission “is out of step with changes in the structure of our elections and the interests of voters.” But there’s some strategic thinking involved in the move, too. A blistering heat wave has been toasting Asia for several weeks, resulting in hundreds of deaths and canceling schools across the region. A scientist for the World Weather Attribution, a meteorological research group, says only human-caused climate change could be responsible for the increased probability of extreme heat in places like the Philippines. “The heat wave exacerbated already precarious conditions faced by internally displaced people, migrants and those in refugee camps and conflict zones across West Asia,” the organization said in a new study. In a new investigative report, AP finds: "In hundreds of deaths where [U.S.] police used force meant to stop someone without killing them, officers violated well-known guidelines for safely restraining and subduing people — not simply once or twice, but multiple times."

"For its investigation, AP catalogued 1,036 deaths over a decade’s time after officers had used force not involving their guns. In about half, medical officials ruled that law enforcement caused or contributed to the deaths, but they usually didn’t mention whether policing best practices were followed."
