Question for users of &/or

I use :archlinux: :kde: :plasma: 💜 as my Host, but enjoy playing with & learning about numerous alternatives in VMs. In the / space, two of these VMs are Kinoite & Kalpa. Whilst not yet convinced that they would adequately suit my use-case as potential future Host Arch replacements [coz i'm an inveterate tinkerer], i nonetheless find them fascinating.

In my Host i actively shy away from , but have come to accept their necessary role in immutables. However IMO the single project that transforms the potential viability of immutables for me is the magnificent . Using DB in both VMs then allows me to create an container in which i can avail myself of the large range of Arch repo apps, & also once setup in it, all the cornucopia of the goodies. It's a brilliant combo.

That said, my mind now turns to another essential requirement for me. My default browser is :firefox_nightly: . Though it's available in the AUR, i much prefer downloading it direct from the Firefox site, extracting it from the tar, then moving it to /opt/firefoxnightly/. This is elementary in Arch, but checking now in my VMs, i'm somewhat surprised to find that both Kinoite & Kalpa seem to have made their respective /opt directories immutable along with the rest of the root directory. I'd certainly have hoped that considering the usual uses of /opt it would have been exempted.

What then do experienced Kinoiters & Kalpans do here? Do you "fight the system" to force Nightly into opt, or do you merely decide to run it from your Home directory?

MsDropbear425 OP ,
@MsDropbear425@infosec.exchange avatar

@rrahl0 Ta, yeah sure, i know ofc i can do anything i want in my Home, that was why i named it as one of the choices. So, presumably you feel that it's not worth bothering to try to "install" it into the real opt?

Several of my VMs, various other distros, are also affected yet also not [ditto sshd permanently disabled] & anyway said VMs are only for mucking about with & self-learning, not production. Feel pretty aghast though at this huge abrupt workload for all the poor upstream peeps directly impacted.

Good people of the fediverse: the latest versions of mastodon (those that are not yet a tagged release) will not work with older web browsers. I do not know which browser versions started supporting the functionality that Mastodon now relies on, but I believe it’s a few years ago.

If you have issues with mastodon, please ensure you are using an up-to-date browser. As a security person, I will say that mastodon compatibility issues is the least important reason you should be using the latest browser versions.

One final request, because it’s been a persistent problem: if you have difficulties using mastodon and have a thundering herd of script blockers, privacy plugins, etc, try disabling those as a first step. Mastodon does rely on a good bit of in browser scripting and related mechanics and I’ve spent many hours helping people debug connection issues, including some instances where people have misinterpreted the normal functioning of mastodon web sockets causing them to accuse the instance of trying to “hack” them.

Don’t be that person.

There is a noticeable decline in the number of active users on Infosec.exchange lately. Where are the cool kids hanging out these days?

MsDropbear425 ,
@MsDropbear425@infosec.exchange avatar

@jerry I still love my IE account, & continue to opine yours is the best Masto instance of the many i've used in recent years. 👍

That said, as mentioned to you separately some weeks ago, currently my active daily "fediversing" occurs via my account @msdropbear42 . I decided i wanted to see how other, ie non-Masto, clients provide their UI & thus generate their users' UX, predicated on alternative tech. Friendica is very different, in many ways, to Masto, not all of which i like, but my overall UX here is very positive &, dare i say, better than Masto.

I hope you're able to see that i am trying to be very clear here that i chose to try this alternative not because of ANY negatives with you nor your instance [both = still excellent!!], but simply coz i was curious for a different Fediverse UX.

I know you've heaps on your plate, but IMO were you to launch your own Friendica instance, i'd be one of your first sign-ups! 😃

Thought. I have always run warm. I do feel the cold, but not as much as most people. I hate (detest?) overheated department stores. This got worse with the onset of perimenopause, & I was unable to wear jumpers for years, because I couldn’t get them off quickly enough during hot flushes, which threatened spontaneous combustion. This settled somewhat after finally going on HRT.

I’ve noticed a change since going on ADHD meds. I now wear winter pjs on a “cool” summers night, & a nightie on warmer ones & am more likely to don a jacket of an evening.

I’m wondering whether this is a consequence of the meds, & overheating is related to ADHD. @actuallyautistic

Quick tip for anyone who wants more urbanism/urban planning/cycling/public transport posts in their Mastodon feed.

Thanks to the wonders of the Fediverse, you can follow and post to Lemmy groups from Mastodon.

Here are some transport/planning/cycling groups to get you started:

@urbanism

@fuck_cars

@trains

@ukpublictransport

@trains

@melbournetrains

@sydneytrains

@brisbanetrains

@bicycling

@bicycling

@utilitycycling

For those unfamiliar with it, Lemmy is basically a federated version of Reddit, distributed across multiple servers like Mastodon. (For anyone who wants to delve further, lemmy.ml, beehaw.org, and aussie.zone are three popular Lemmy instances.)

From Mastodon, you can follow any Lemmy group by following its handle, exactly the same way that you would follow a Mastodon account. Any new posts to that group will then begin appearing in your Mastodon feed.

Even better, if you start a thread on Mastodon, you can also post it to a relevant Lemmy group just by including its handle in your post. (Please note this only seems to work with the first post of a thread.)
