I like following accounts from different countries on here. I have not found very many (any really) accounts from Asian or African countries though. Are there not that many on Fedi yet, or am I just not finding the right ones?

Is there any way to moderate comments on a mastodon post? Other than blocking a person? If a commenter attacks another person in your replies, there's no way of preventing that?

I understand the importance of alt text for images. But as I was drafting my image description just now a question occurred to me – in adding alt text to images am I also inadvertently making it easier for the AI bots to scrape my artwork?

NatureMC ,
@NatureMC@mastodon.online avatar

@beach At least in the Fediverse there shouldn't be any for (?) Does anybody know more? @FediTips @feditips ?

Scraping bots don't need ALT-texts for scraping (they have image recognition).

At the moment, the only ways to protect are Glaze and Nightshade, https://glaze.cs.uchicago.edu/index.html and https://nightshade.cs.uchicago.edu/ and banning AI bots on your website in the robot.txt

What does the / (or infosec-adjacent) community think of "establishing" a go-to hashtag for asking infosec-related questions? Something like or ? Personally I think the latter has a better ring to it but curious what others think. I've seen a lot of people in the community ask questions that don't get answered due to classic social reach issues but perhaps a dedicated hashtag could help alleviate some of that. (If you have a catchier tag feel free to comment!)

Hm.

New in the network and it seems to be empty? Try these steps.

(Note: I'm using as an example.)

  1. Create three lists: "CUR: All", "CUR: Flipboard", "CUR: Newsmast".

(CUR = CURated / CURation)

  1. Search for "Flipboard" and "Newsmast" (Flipboard accounts share the same icon, Newsmast accounts share the same icon as well.)

  2. Follow the accounts you're interested in. (It's by topic.)

  3. Add each of those accounts to your "CUR: All" list. And to its respective platform list: "CUR: Flipboard" or "CUR: Newsmast".

  4. Switch your "Home" view to "CUR: All", "CUR: Flipboard", or "CUR: Newsmast".

Another way of doing it is by topic:

  • CUR: Nature
  • CUR: Current Events
  • CUR: Programming

Or, by region:

  • CUR: Local
  • CUR: Asia-Pacific
  • CUR: Africa

Adjust it to your needs.

In the Mastodon family, you can set the list to not show up in your "Home" timeline. This way, you can still see the posts from other people you follow without it being filled with curated content boosts.

Benefits of following curation accounts:

  1. You don't have to follow every single account.

> Usually, accounts share other topics which you probably are not interested in. Curated lists filter these topics for you.

  1. You will discover content and people to follow.

> Both Flipboard and Newsmast boosts/reshares the original post. You see the original source/account and interact with them directly.

> You can then choose who you want to follow directly so you can see more of their content and interests, and build a friendly relationship with them.

It becomes possible to only follow 10 accounts ever, yet consume hundreds of content and information.

This way, you can avoid following hundreds of accounts which will only make your "Home" timeline confusing; and more likely, you'll miss what matters most for you because of so many posts from so many accounts.

I hope it helps you! Welcome to the Fediverse !

P.s. If you're using an awesome Fediverse software or platform besides Mastodon, the steps are similar, if not exactly the same.

So, did I miss anything noteworthy? Does anyone have any tips or recommendations before I choose a server for any one of these? I'll probably be going for the most popular server on each for improved federation and maintenance.

Note: I'm using right now and Misskey forks are already overrepresented, so that's why it's not included.

question: Is there some markup for referring to a specific book, instead of a specific user?

That is to say, if you are commenting on a particular book and want to link to or recommend another book, it would be fairly neat to simply add a markup-link to that other book within the local Bookwyrm library instead of posting an URL.

Hey y’all! Just got hit with an acute case of . My entire team at Okta was laid off (including yours truly), and a few sibling teams were sacked as well; dozens of people I used to work with, gone in a day. Still processing it all.

If you know of a good company looking for a solid Software Engineer (Node, JS/TS, Tailwind, edge, k8s, CI/CD, you name it), please let me know.

1/ One part of the which I think is still criminally underutilized is . I, too, created an account months ago, only to ignore it for a long time. But now I'm finally making strides in indexing my library, and I want to share what I have learned about making this process as smoothly as possible.

First, of course, you will need your own BookWyrm account - the following website can help you with choosing an appropriate instance (as with Mastodon and other Fediverse platforms, there are multiple instances to choose from).
