Pulizie di primavera sulle istanze poliverso.org e poliversity.it: eliminati quasi tutti gli utenti inattivi a più di un anno. Cos'è successo e perché l'abbiamo fatto? E perché (quasi) nessun altro fa questo tipo di pulizie?
Uno dei grandi problemi del #Fediverso è che solo un 10% degli utenti complessivi si è effettivamente collegato da meno di un mese, intervallo di tempo questo che segna la differenza tra un "utente attivo" e un utente disperso che presenta un'alta probabilità di essere "deceduto".
Nelle scorse settimane abbiamo provveduto a verificare l'esistenza in vita dei nostri account più vecchi per capire se si trattasse di utenti realmente inattivi oppure solo di persone ancora interessate al Fediverso e i risultati hanno confermato le nostre aspettative: solo una minoranza esigua di questi account ha infatti confermato un qualche interesse a lurkare su #Mastodon o su #Friendica in posizione sefalica*.

Il risultato di questa pulizia è stato decisamente significativo:
l'istanza poliverso.org è passata dai 554 utenti complessivi di fine marzo, ai 516 di fine aprile (dati fediverse.observer) e ad oggi viene indicata (dati fedidb.org) con 480 utenti complessivi: 74 utenti in meno pari al 13% del volume complessivo.
l'istanza poliversity.it è passata dai 160 utenti complessivi di fine marzo, ai 138 di fine aprile (dati fediverse.observer) e ad oggi viene indicata (dati fedidb.org) con 116 utenti complessivi: 44 utenti in meno, pari al 27% del volume complessivo.
D'altra parte abbiamo notato un dato in apparente controtendenza:
l'istanza poliverso.org è passata dai 141 utenti complessivi di fine marzo, ai 161 di fine aprile (dati fediverse.observer) e ad oggi viene indicata (dati fedidb.org) con 183 utenti complessivi: 42 utenti attivi in più, ossia un incremento del 30% degli utenti attivi.
l'istanza poliversity.it è passata dai 47 utenti attivi di fine marzo, ai 56 di fine aprile (dati fediverse.observer) e ad oggi viene indicata (dati fedidb.org) con 58 utenti complessivi: 11 utenti attivi in più, ossia un incremento del 23% degli utenti attivi.
Come si spiega questa controtendenza
In realtà, benché alcuni nessi potrebbero essere di carattere contingente, non c'è necessariamente una causalità stretta tra l'eliminazione di utenti inattivi e l'incremento di utenti attivi e il motivo principale è il primo della lista:
quando abbiamo cercato di prendere contatto con gli utenti inattivi, si è avuto un risveglio di alcuni di essi che ha determinato la "resurrezione" dei profili inattivi da più di un mese
è possibile che alcuni utenti che hanno ricevuto l'avviso ma che non erano interessati a recuperare il profilo corrente, abbiano deciso di reiscriversi
è possibile che alcuni profili fossero di bot automatizzati che, una volta risultati eliminati, si sono reiscritti automaticamente
Il risoltato è comunque quello di avere uno scostamento minore tra utenti complessivi e utenti attivi.
Ma perché questo ciclo di pulizia?
Il primo motivo è la privacy dei nostri utenti: se i nostri utenti non utilizzano il nostro social, non c'è motivo che noi continuiamo a trattare i dati personali necessari a gestire il loro account
il secondo motivo è la sIcurezza, intesa come sicurezza di noi amministratori ma anche di tutto il fediverso. Infatti, il fatto di avere in pancia utenti inattivi, non significa né che lo siano davvero, né che non siano utenti pericolosi. Una delle vulnerabilità del Fediverso che nasce dalle istanze a iscrizione libera è che qualche attore malevolo potrebbe far iscrivere utenti fittizi come parte di una botnet da attivare in certi momenti per produrre spam, far aumentare follower, alterare i flussi regolari dei messaggi. Ora, i socal commerciali dispongono di alcuni sistemi di mitigazione del rischio che, sebbene non risolutivi, consentono di sospendere o annullare gli effetti di queste campagne di alterazione della visibilità. Il fediverso invece non dispone di questi strumenti. Ogni utente inattivo è pertanto una piccola potenziale bomba a orologeria, piazzata dentro gli ingranaggi del Fediverso: una botnet dormiente, incistata in tutte le istanze del mondo e pronta a esplodere sarebbe impossibile da fermare in tempi rapidi!
Sebbene abbiamo riscontrato che l'eliminazione di profili inattivi non abbia avuto effetti positivi sul risparmio di risorse da parte del sistema, è chiaro che sul lungo termine, la nostra istanza si risparmierà di visualizzare in timeline quei contenuti che sarebbero stati visibili solo perché prodotti da contatti di secondo livello del nostro utente inattivo.
Ma perché questa pulizia non la fa nessuno?

The third party Android app Fedilab (which lets you use Mastodon, PeerTube, Pixelfed, Friendica etc) is now free on Google Play, and continues to be free on F-Droid too. If you haven't tried it yet, this might be a good time:

Of course, those are only rough numbers. Most of the people following him are on Threads, and many do not even know anything about decentralized social platforms (or care). People outside of Threads that are following him are few (including myself, now*).
But this is more of a symbolic thing. Once other profiles enable the Fediverse integration, we'll be seeing more and more Threads profiles topping the charts. Or maybe not, who knows. I already start to see many profiles on Threads that stopped posting since quite a while, and I'm wondering if they're still active. Many people on other centralized platforms just call Threads dead already, lol.
OTOH, even the overall atmosphere on Threads just seems to be... subpar to say the least. I really don't feel I could learn anything from the people out there, apart from a few dozen interesting profiles that are simply just hard to find - they were hard to find on Insta, they are hard to find there as well. If, for whatever reason, Threads were to simply turn the federation off abruptly, I wouldn't feel anything of value would be lost apart from these profiles, at least for me. I wonder how long it will take until it will be just another enshittified, ad-ridden, useless platform, just like the other two in #Meta's portfolio are, all filled with trolls, bots, scammers and propaganda accounts of the Kremlin-backed modern far-right that spread the lies and nonsense.
If you have a presence on Mastodon, yet you'd also love to try out Threads, you're not missing anything. Really. This place is just way better, and it centers not around advertisers, but around you.

I also have a habit of checking my profile from various servers, and I'm having a hard time seeing even my popular posts. So I can say #Friendica keeps me quite protected from the aforementioned. Plus that Meta doesn't have any ads to serve me around this place.

Not every fediverse user want to connect to Bluesky but for those that do, you can look into using Friendica. The next release will allow you to use your Bluesky account from within Friendica. Interact with Mastodon / Msskey / Pixelfed etc and Bluesky users together on one platform

If you haven't heard, sadly, #ChirpSocial, one of the popular #ActivityPub “groups” platform, is shutting down “probably” on February 29th.
In an email they sent to admins, the owner and developer can no longer support https://chirp.social financially as they failed to find a new job after they were laid off by #Google last year.
This reminds us the importance of having a built-in groups feature, and one where the groups feature actually federates.
Back in 2008, when the #Fediverse was born, we did have a built-in federated groups in #Laconica / #StatusNet (today known as #GNUsocial). We used bang (!) instead of at (@). A built-in groups feature is more stable as established instances can host them.
Today, we have #Friendica and #Hubzilla (as well as #Streams-based instances) to fill in that, as groups is a built-in feature in those software products. It's just a matter of finding an instance that's open to hosting groups for any topic for the ActivityPub protocol.
That said, any Friendica, Hubzilla, Streams-based instances you suggest for groups?

Il progetto Poliverso, da cui nasce lo stesso progetto feddit.it, è stato creato per mettere a disposizione degli utenti italiani un'intera istanza basata su Friendica, che non è solo la più completa alternativa a Facebook, ma è anche il software più potente per l'esplorazione del Fediverso!
Con poliverso.org puoi interagire con tutti i profili delle Fediverso, ma puoi anche collegare il tuo account Bluesky; a differenza di Mastodon puoi scrivere post lunghi con il testo formattato e le immagini in linea, ma puoi anche creare eventi o interagire con gli eventi di Mobilizon, seguire il feed RSS di altri siti web o addirittura di canali telegram e puoi impostarne anche la pubblicazione automatica dal tuo profilo.
Con Friendica è possibile anche creare utenti di servizio gestiti da uno staff di più utenti ognuno con un proprio account.
Infine è possibile creare gruppi del Fediverso, come i gruppi Facebook, ossia degli account che quando vengono menzionati ricondividono automaticamente il post pubblicato, cosicché venga visto da tutti gli utenti (utenti di tutto il fediverso!) che seguono quel gruppo.
Ma il progetto Poliverso non si ferma qui: insieme al blog lealternative.net abbiamo aperto feddit.it, la prima istanza italiana basata su Lemmy, un'alternativa a reddit perfettamente federata con il resto del Fediverso.
Su feddit.it puoi scegliere una delle tante comunità tematiche presenti e aprire un nuovo thread, come su un subreddit, e segnalare o commentare i link di articoli di giornale o di post interessanti, visualizzandoli in un interfaccia che ricorda quella di un forum. Feddit.it non è soltanto uno spazio a disposizione dei suoi utenti, ma tutti coloro che dispongono di un account Mastodon, Friendica, Pleroma, Misskey o Pixelfed [b]possono aprire un nuovo thread (anche dal tuo blog WordPress!) creando un nuovo post e menzionando la comunità di proprio interesse![/b]
Il terzo progetto di Poliverso è costituito da poliversity.it, la prima istanza Mastodon in Italia dedicata al mondo dell'università e della ricerca ma anche a quello del giornalismo. Se sei un ricercatore, uno studente, un giornalista o se semplicemente sei interessato a questi temi, poi iscriverti e partecipare alle discussioni.

Effettivamente per un pò ho utilizzato #soapbox per visualizzare il mio account #friendica in #poliverso per beneficiare di una grafica migliore. Ovviamente con le dovute e tante limitazioni.

Maybe I should start an irregular series of "What Hubzilla is like" posts for people in the Fediverse, Mastodon specifically, who don't know anything about it. Not for those who want to switch, but for those who assume that Hubzilla is just like whatever else they know. Like, for Mastodon users who blindly assume that Hubzilla is just like Mastodon with a different UI and then act accordingly. Thus, it'd mostly focus on how Hubzilla is different from Mastodon.
The difficult part would be to limit these posts to only 500 characters. Minus what I'll need for the hashtags, namely #Hubzilla, #FediTips and #FediverseTips to increase discoverability for those who are interested and #FediMeta, #FediverseMeta, #CWFediMeta and #CWFediverseMeta so that these posts are automatically removed or hidden behind generated content warnings by already existing filters. Because I know for a fact that many Mastodon users won't touch anything that goes even a smidge over 500 characters. And I know that there are Mastodon users for whom any and all Fediverse meta is too nerve-gratingly techy.

Not really. 🤪 I'm on a Mastodon-powered instance.
I used to run a #Philippines#Friendica server. (It was the second #fediverse instance for the Philippines. The first was running Friendika managed by students.)
Then I ran my own #Hubzilla (family & friends). And used to manage the community for an #ASEAN Hubzilla instance (sadly, the sponsor and admin disappeared).
Today, I'm staying away from the backend management. I no longer have the resources to dedicate to it. So, I just search for instances with sane set up (like not abusing site-level blocks because someone told them to).
"True Fediverse citizens" (for lack of a better label) do exist on Mastodon-powered platforms. There are plenty of others beside me. 😃
