Listen, if you’re a white person, and you think you’ve had Szechuan food, you probably haven’t.

Most of the Szechuan restaurants in the USA lack a basic component: spiciness.

I say this because a friend from out of town just went to a Szechuan restaurant in Vancouver, thought it was going to be business as usual, and now he’s doubled over because the spice is too much for him.

He tells me, it’s so bad, that he feels the spice eking out of his pores. 🤣

RufusJCooter ,
@RufusJCooter@mstdn.social avatar

@adnan @atomicpoet Well, the thing is, it's not just that different spices are different.

It's that spices get processed by your system in the context of the other things that it's concurrently processing.

You're (probably?) not eating raw green chilies on their own, w/o any other spices or ingredients alongside? Like, chicken, or rice, or [whatever]?

Listen: Mexican hot is different from Szechuan hot is different from Thai hot is different from NOLA hot is different from [etc.]

OK, @pluralistic 's The Bezzle finally bubbled up to the top of my to-read stack, and hot damn! Such a great read, in turns hilarious and infuriating and heart breaking.

And I had a thought about why I find his writing so compelling - he's something of a 21st century Dickens; his daily threads show you the pieces of the puzzle, much as Dickens' serializations of his work doled out a story in bite-sized chunks. Then, you sit down and read the whole, and it you see the whole, and... damn.

I try not to be this person all the time. But occasionally I like to gently remind people that the causality is backwards. Google’s profits are soaring in part because they’re doing layoffs. That’s why they are doing layoffs. There are always 2 ways to increase profits. Make more revenue or decrease operating expenses. @polotek I don't disagree with any of this!

I note, however, that "now" and "right now" are doing a /lot/ of work in your correct observation.

The comments are off, but please feel free to let me know here if I made an error. I don't hire a proofreader (duh, right?)

A (slightly off-topic) ? for you: did you follow jury selection this past week, and if so, what did you make of it?

@Teri_Kanefield Certainly!

On the other hand, I think that it's also possible for one to hate Trump, /and/ think that it's unseemly for the state to prosecute pols once they're out of power, or think that NY state law is so byzantine & convoluted that everyone has technically broken it at least once, so this is "selective prosecution, or (etc.)

I want to go to with a version of this, but need to let it sit overnight and probably rewrite it. But I also think it's something anyone interested in non-corporate-controlled social media needs to think about, because a fair number of people go "influencers, fuck 'em" and that's... not how I think this needs to be understood. If you don't care about them, fine, but care about their followers who will follow them away.

Because like it or not, if you want to go against corporate-owned social media, you need these people too.
