Hey everyone, It's Friday! You know what that means?

If you said, "don't push code to prod", "ladies and gentlemen, the weekend", or "that it's Friday", ...you're right!

But I was specifically referring to (or for short)

So without further ado…

  • @transflowerwitch - is a beautiful person and they're having a rough time right now—show them some love :heart_trans:
  • @catsalad - who I'm so pleased is in my life :ablobcatheart:
  • @AeonCypher - knows a lot about AI (and has been my best friend since childhood) :neocat_hug:
  • @deviantollam - should frequent Mastodon more (oh and he knows security stuff) :neocat_cool_fingerguns:
  • @xyhhx - is super sweet (and you should hire them) 🍜
  • @infobeautiful - because data becomes information when it's made accessible 📊
  • @guardian - so you'll know when they publish more anti-trans bullshit and you can yell at them 🤬
  • @alice_watson - I've heard they're pretty cool 🤷‍♀️
  • @dgar - has puns for days 😉
  • @GottaLaff - has the best commentary on the train wreck that is Trump 🍿

⚠️ It's a trap ⚠️ (please boost for reach)

I was just informed that the Guardian is prepping to do a story on DIY HRT and is looking to interview trans folk, particularly teens.

The story will almost certainly be weaponized by conservatives to argue for removing access to the necessary materials.

Just like with the police, anything you say can and will be used against you by mainstream media.

Be safe out there fam :heart_trans: :Blobhaj_Hug:

It is truly fucked up how little we (but mostly the religious & conservative Right) care about women.

"""
Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women—more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined (and it's only a misdemeanor in a lot of places)
"""
pregnant and postpartum people in states with abortion restrictions had a 75 percent higher rate of homicide than those in states that protected abortion access
...
there was a 98 percent increase in reports of reproductive coercion the year after Dobbs
...
the reality is, coerced abortions are overall quite rare, and it’s far more common for abusers to forcibly get someone pregnant and keep someone pregnant as a way to keep them under their control
"""
In 2022, American women typically earned 82 cents for every dollar earned by men (and had shitty parental leave, and held fewer executive positions)
"""
78.2% of all sexual harassment charges in the workplace are filed by women.
"""

So women have fewer rights than men, are mostly victimized by men, get worse compensation than men, and have to put up with more hostile work environments than men.

Aaand I'll wrap up my rant here for now.

Also, trans women are women—so this same BS applies on top of all the BS they get for being trans.

Sorry for the US bias—it's what I'm most familiar with and many of the English studies are from here.

I would like to vote for both the "End of Democratic party" and the "End of Republican party" on this ballot, but I don't think that's what they had in mind.

alice OP ,
@alice@lgbtqia.space avatar

@breadandcircuses perhaps we could decide on which issues are important, do away with parties, and rank vote candidates based on which way they voted (or pledged to vote) on those issues. Perhaps we allow a specific time and resource budget for all candidates, across networks, so that money doesn't have such a huge role in who gets seen. Perhaps we could hold corporations and billionaires accountable for their roles in trying to influence elections by exercising harsh penalties for tampering.

Or we could just nuke all the primary parties local hangouts and start again with something less intentionally broken.

alice OP ,
@alice@lgbtqia.space avatar

@breadandcircuses I hate to admit it, but years ago I almost voted for Trump, with the sole hope that it would bring about the collapse of the whole system, and that maybe we could rise from the flames with something new and less fucked.

In the end, I came to my senses and voted Democrat. Trump still won, but he didn't even have the competence to burn everything down. I mean, everything was on fire (and still is), but rich white dudes proved less flammable than I'd hoped.

I have to share this. So my partner is on the DEI board for a nonprofit org, which consists of my partner, a gay black woman, a Latina woman, and a straight white guy.

I was working from the other room and overhead some of their meeting.

The guy, (Fred? Doug? Something like that. Let's say Fred), had coopted the meeting for the last hour. He was going on about how he didn't think the org needed a DEI committee...it went something like:

"Race is an outdated social construct."

"I don't see color or gender."

"If everyone was just chill like me, there wouldn't be an issue."

And so on.

I heard my partner trying to gently reign in his monopoly on the discussion:

"Maybe we should hear from one of the other members about their lived experiences?"

He kept going; transitioning into the topic of "handout programs":

"I mean, the opportunities are there. Maybe the story was different in the past, but now they just have to work for it like anyone else."

Note: my partner was (nearly still)born into poverty, abuse, a broken child welfare system, and has multiple chronic conditions.

I could hear the frustration in my partner's voice. No one else spoke up.

My partner got up and left the call for a bit. Fred didn't seem to notice, as I could hear him still talking away in the background.

Eventually the meeting ended.

The other two women said they thought they got a lot out of the meeting, and that Fred brought up some good points (though I must of missed those ones from the other room).

My partner came into my office and recapped the meeting in one looong sentence (they were rather agitated).

So what's the moral of this story?

If you don't know why diversity, equity, and inclusion are necessary, then you're probably the reason.

If you refer to inclusion and social systems as "handout programs" then you have probably lived a priveledged fucking life.

If you're sitting on a DEI board full of LGBTQIA+/BIPOC people and none of those letters apply to you, then you'd better pay close attention to the collective lived experiences and perspectives of those other members.

If all the above apply to you, then you're probably Fred (and feeling pretty called out).

Don't be Fred.

It's the first day of National Women's History Month (in the US)! :neocat_aww: :neocat_heart:

Hey you! :neocat_boop_blush: Take a moment to post something about a woman you were inspired by. I'd love to read about it. :ablobcatheart:

I'll start. :neocat_blep:

I'm going to share a bit about @rebeccawatson and https://skepchick.org/

I've always been a STEM-loving non-believer, and some years ago, in college, I started voraciously reading books and listening podcasts about science, skepticism, secular-humanism, etc. :neocat_cool:

These topics were largely dominated by male voices and perspectives (Hitchens, Dawkins, Harris, Dunning, Shermer, Gould, Stenger, Penn & Teller, Brushwood, and so on). :neocat_shocked:

I can't remember which podcast it was, but Rebecca was a guest that week, and I immediately loved listening to her perspectives on the stories. :neocat_floof_mug:

She was refreshing, entertaining, witty, knowledgeable, roughly my age...and she stood out as one of the only non-male voices I'd heard. :ablobcatheart:

Basically, I looked up to her, and I owe a lot of my own skepticism and knowledge on the topic to her work. So, thank you @rebeccawatson 💜

Edit: Yes, I added cute emoji so people would actually read this post.

alice OP ,
@alice@lgbtqia.space avatar

@AeonCypher @actuallyautistic there needs to be better differentiation between question sets and diagnostic criteria for different subtypes within diagnoses like ASD and ADD/ADHD, especially where they often present differently between genders, cultures, etc.

I believe that we have the issue where a lot of these DSM entries are still going off US-male-centric views and/or outdated research.

How about starting with a collection of the diagnostic "I statements" from the diagnostic tests in my self-dx project (and any other good tests with solid research behind them)?

We can ask people to not only answer the questions, but to also rate how useful they feel that statement is as a differentiator.

We should capture self-reported age-range, gender identity, and self/formal diagnosis status for ASD, AD(H)D, MDD, (G)AD, and possibly OCD. Their traits all have some overlap (and everyone is depressed and anxious).
