LTS just means Long Term Support in case you weren't aware. It means no new development is happening, but security exploits will be patched as soon as they arise.

If you just want stability, LTS is the way to go. If you want all the cutting edge bells and whistles and are okay with potentially some instability (but probably not much) then use the latest version.

If your device isn't connected to the internet during general use then I wouldn't worry too much about updating anything. Security fixes aren't important if there's no way to connect to your device.

Large scale nuclear power plants take hundreds of millions or billions of dollars of investment and loads of time to build. It's more likely that any nuclear revolution is going to come in the form of smaller scale micro reactors.

Ordinals are largely used for counting and when you're counting you kind of do start a zero, most people just don't say it. When you count 1... 2... 3... it would work just as well to start 0... 1... 2... 3... So programmers can rest easy.

A Void's plot follows a group of individuals looking for a missing companion, Anton Vowl. It is in part a parody of noir and horror fiction, with many stylistic tricks, gags, plot twists, and a grim conclusion. On many occasions it implicitly talks about its own lipogrammatic limitation, highlighting its unusual syntax. A Void's protagonists finally work out which symbol is missing, but find it a hazardous topic to discuss, as any who try to bypass this story's constraint risk fatal injury. Philip Howard, writing a lipogrammatic appraisal of A Void in his column Lost Words, said "This is a story chock-full of plots and sub-plots, of loops within loops, of trails in pursuit of trails, all of which allow its author an opportunity to display his customary virtuosity as an avant-gardist magician, acrobat and clown."

I also find it funny that this paragraph from OP's link also avoids using an individual symbol. I'm also trying to do it in my post, but it's hard to form any thought without it. I don't think that I could draft a full book using this constraint, and notably a book that's so cognizant of it's own imposing limitation and of it's protagonists habit of fourth wall smashing.

I believe there are loads of renewable projects that are ready to connect to the grid but the grid isn't ready for them. A big part of the problem is the aging infrastructure of the electrical grid can't handle all these new projects. It really needs to be updated, ASAP! I remember Obama talking about renewing the power grid in the USA like 10+ years ago but it never went anywhere unfortunately.

By the way, the reason the McDonald's ice cream machine is always down is because one company essentially provides all of the machines. As a result, they control the maintenance of it by having vague error codes and not providing a proper manual so that McDonald's employees wind up having to call their technicians to come and service it. Either that or the employees try running it through a clean cycle to try to fix the error which takes FOUR HOURS to complete and can't be interrupted.

I love the theory that these guys are basically the origins of the Borg. They kept gathering technology that they didn't understand and at one point the technology took over them, then time travel or some non-sense sent one of their ships back in time, boom! Borg born.

Edit: Also the image of them being like "We are smart Borg. Resistance is dumb. You will give us your stuff." is definitely the best part of this theory

ShaunaTheDead ,

Everyone's gonna act like they don't care until scammers are calling your loved ones with your face and your voice and stealing your life savings. Or people are working remote jobs using your voice and face and government ID and you have to pay the taxes for it. Or whatever.

This is a new front of identity theft. The laws that are crafted now are going to decide how awful this new technology will be able to be exploited. You may not care about a voice actor from a video game having her voice stolen, but the impact of decisions surrounding this stuff is going to affect us all at some point very soon.

Original Fallout lead Tim Cain loves the new show, but remains baffled by how 'destructive' fans can act toward 'people who are trying to create things' ( www.pcgamer.com )

Cain appreciated the performances and storytelling, but singled out how the show nailed the Fallout "vibe" as its biggest achievement. "I was just looking at all the props," he said of one scene. "I realized after a few minutes went by that I had not followed the dialogue at all, because I was so engrossed by it visually."...

You're right about the writing, and the moment that sold me that the writing in this show is actually good was when Maximus and The Ghoul are fighting in Filly and instead of showing the entire fight, they cut to the people inside talking. Realizing that the fight adds nothing of substance but showy graphics is usually the indicator to me that the writers are in control of the vision of the show which pretty much always bodes well.

ShaunaTheDead , (edited )

I read a review that said the show was "too woke". I haven't seen anything that's woke except that a non-binary character exists and is referred to as "them", and the shopkeepers in Filly seem to be lesbians but it's not explicitly stated. It's annoying seeing the word "woke" but it's also kind of nice that it's easy to spot the dipshits. Anyone using the word "woke" probably sucks big time.

This is craaaazy astronomical news if true! I'll try to summarize from my limited understanding as I'm not a professional.

First of all, this article is about Dark Energy, at it's basics Dark Energy is an unknown force which is why it's called "dark" and it was named after scientists couldn't explain why the universe (or spacetime specifically) was expanding as quickly as it is. This paper is the first piece of observational evidence that might "shed some light" on where Dark Energy comes from. From what I can gather, it says that through observing lots of supermassive black holes at the center of loads of galaxies, they've determined two things if this observation is correct: black holes don't have a singularity at their cores, and that black holes gain mass by "cosmological coupling" as they put it.

First, a singularity means that math breaks down, it usually means that it tends toward infinity and the equation can't be solved. With black holes, it usually means that spacetime itself collapses down infinitely into a single dimension, which is pretty hard for us to understand and breaks a lot of physical laws like Einstein's equations.

Second, "cosmological coupling" they explain is that as the space expands, the black hole also expands. In very simple terms, lets say the black hole has a diameter 2 LY (light years) in space. If after say a million years space expands enough that 2 LY now is equivalent to 1 LY before then the size of the black hole is essentially 4 LY now when using the old universe's definition of what a LY is.

Edit: I forgot to mention that because the black hole is essentially "absorbing" spacetime it must gain energy because spacetime does have energy even though we consider it "empty".

Because of Einstein's famous equation e=mc^2 we can determine that energy is basically equivalent to mass, and since the black hole is getting extra energy from this "cosmological coupling", it's also gaining mass.

I think the most basic TL;DR I can give then is: black holes are sort of "absorbing" spacetime as it expands and gaining energy while doing so which in turn leads them to gaining mass. This extra mass has now been shown through observation to account for and completely explain the origins of Dark Energy.

With that said... THIS PAPER IS BRAND NEW AND HAS NOT BEEN PEER REVIEWED! This is not a discovery yet, it's way too early to say anything conclusive.

ShaunaTheDead ,

I'm going to take a guess because again I'm not an astronomer or a physicist, just a lay person and an enthusiast.

What Dark Energy does can basically be boiled down to anti-gravity. It's not exactly that, we're not really sure what it is, but that's what effect it has, it's repulsive in the same way that gravity is attractive. The theory is that space is expanding and the more space between things (like galaxies) the faster they will move away from each other. It's also been getting faster since the Big Bang.

We also assumed that black holes didn't gain much mass unless they absorbed a large body of matter or had an accretion disk -- They do gain mass through Hawking Radiation but that's pretty minuscule. So I think this study has to do with the distribution of matter throughout the universe and the amount of matter in galaxies.

If black holes have always been as massive as they are today then we would assume that everything would be much closer together and the super massive black holes at the center of galaxies would have gathered more matter than they currently have. So we made the assumption that there must have been some kind of repulsive force that spread everything out. Instead the black holes had less gravitational force than we assumed and so it explains why they didn't gather more matter into their orbits and everything spread out across the universe in the way we observe it today.

Again, I'm just guessing based on my limited knowledge. If an astronomer wants to jump in here, please do!

I think it's interesting that that line is thought to be misinterpreted by Christians. Jewish people believe, and have quite a bit of evidence to support their ideas, that the line should be "A grown man shall not have sex with a young boy". This is also known as "pederasty".

Here's an article from The Jewish Standard about it that goes into far more detail than I can provide:
https://jewishstandard.timesofisrael.com/redefining-leviticus-2013/

And here's a wikipedia article about pederasty:

One of my favorite facts about what you just described is that "Christ" in Jesus' name isn't his last name but instead essentially means "the annointed". Annointing is a religious practice in which a holy figure puts oil on you. And the name "Jesus" can be translated throughout the ages to basically be equivalent to the name "Joshua" in today's English. So "Jesus Christ" today is basically "Oily Josh" lol

Looks like an article paid for by Epic.

Here's a repost of what I said the last time the Steam vs Epic Games Store "debate" was brought up:

My biggest concern with Epic is their insistence on kernel level anti-cheat which is just ridiculous overkill and probably being used as spyware let's be honest. They have many ties to China's Tencent which has a 40% stake in the company and is known to basically just be an extension of the Chinese government.

There's also the very odd fact that just having the Epic Games Store open in the background will deplete your laptops battery life by up to 20%. Is it just horribly optimized and uses all that battery even when idling, or is it doing something nefarious in the background? We don't know.

As for exclusives, they have bought exclusives that were mostly crowd funded from the start which is quite the kick in the teeth to the early investors that helped get the project off the ground. And there were even some exclusives that were already listed for pre-order through Steam, forcing everyone to need to get a refund.

Plus, any good will that they've purchased so far is just in service of making a good name for themselves. They've been losing around $400 million per year since 2019 just to bring in new users. They're going to suddenly turn around and start being cut-throat as soon as they think they can.

They are not consumer friendly, they want to dictate trends in gaming. Valve is already the king of that throne and they're fairly benevolent and have pushed trends that are good for gaming and consumers overall. I have serious doubt that Epic would be anywhere near as good for gaming as Valve has been if they should actually become profitable, and an industry leader. Especially when it's projected that they won't be profitable until 2027, which means they'll need to recoup their investment of nearly $3.2 billion since 2019.

I imagine that your brain probably goes into sleep mode while your body is trying to recover from something extremely traumatic to try to preserve resources. And if it looks like you're going to die anyway then there's no reason to keep preserving resources and the brain needs to run full-tilt to see if it can come up with a solution quickly.

TIL about the Crackpot Index, a humorous post for people who claim to have disproved Einstein's theory ( math.ucr.edu )

I don't really get the appeal of strongly typed languages. Can't you just use try/catch blocks, and/or use functional programming and return early if the data structure of whatever you're working with isn't what you expected?

I guess it can help older code easier to maintain because the expected data structure is right there, but you could also just include it in a comment above the function.

I personally find TS slows down initial production of a project and raises so many unnecessary errors.

Is there some huge benefit that I'm missing? Because I don't really get the appeal. I mean, I do on some level, but I don't really understand why so many people are absolutely obsessed with TS.

ShaunaTheDead ,

Inertia is the tendency of objects in motion to stay in motion, and objects at rest to stay at rest, unless a force causes its speed or direction to change. from Wikipedia

So they're kind of just saying that once it picks up enough rotational speed.

ShaunaTheDead ,

A bunch of people are going to become related all of a sudden really quick!

Honestly though, my partner and I already use the family sharing extensively, so I hope this is an improvement. It is kind of tedious right now that you have to physically log in to the other person's machine to be able to add them to your family sharing plan, so any kind of improvement on that front is welcome.

ShaunaTheDead ,

There was a pretty big work around for that, as long as only one person is in "online" mode on Steam, you can technically have infinite people playing at once. Of course that only works if most people want to play a single player or local LAN game.

ShaunaTheDead ,

I don't know much about anti-cheat development, but it can't possibly be that hard to at least implement something that checks whether a player even could have done something in a certain amount of time which would eliminate a lot of speed related cheats, and for the rest, why not look at data averages to try to weed out cheaters?

I know combing through the data is probably complicated, but so is installing kernel level anti cheat software that has to monitor every single process running on a person's computer.

ShaunaTheDead ,

Okay, I thought that they were like clams and the picture at the start of the article was showing a row of eyes between the fuzzy/spiky stuff on the side but after looking them up, that shiny part between the fuzzy/spiky stuff in the picture is it's shell. The eyes are tiny specs between all the fuzzy/spiky stuff.

ShaunaTheDead ,

I still don't know WHY they have eyes all over their shells even after reading the article. It's a pretty click baity title, but I guess it worked on me so they won this round.

ShaunaTheDead ,

Look up pictures of chiton (the name of the creature in question). It's nearly impossible to find a picture that looks like the shell itself are the eyes, yet in the article featured front and center is a picture of a chiton with a shell that happens to look like bug eyes.

ShaunaTheDead ,

I'm not super familiar with VLC but I asked a chatbot, does this help at all?

1. Open your video with VLC.
2. Navigate to the scene that you want to capture. You can use VLC’s frame-by-frame feature to access a specific frame in your video.
3. Capture the screenshot by pressing Shift+S (Windows and Linux) or Command+Alt+S (Mac).
4. Alternatively, from VLC’s menu bar, select Video > Take Snapshot.

If you’d like to use advanced controls to capture the screenshot, then from VLC’s menu bar, select View > Advanced Controls to enable those controls. Then, in VLC’s bottom-left corner, click the camera icon to take a snapshot1.

Your screenshot is now captured and saved in a folder on your computer. The default location for the screenshots is as follows:

1. Windows: C:\\Users\\username\\Pictures
2. Mac: Desktop/
3. Linux: ~/Pictures

If you’d like to change where VLC stores your screenshots, or you’d like to change the file format, then select Tools > Preferences from VLC’s menu bar. On the “Simple Preferences” window that opens, select the “Video” tab. To change the default screenshot directory, then in the “Video Snapshots” section, click “Browse” next to “Directory.” Then, choose the new folder that you want to set as the default for your screenshots. If you’d like to use a different image format (the default is PNG) for your snapshots, then click the “Format” drop-down menu and choose a new format. Your options include PNG, JPG, and TIFF. After you’ve made the changes, at the bottom of the “Simple Preferences” window, click “Save” to save your changes.

ShaunaTheDead ,

Oh a time for me to share my specialized expertise! So I was a dog walker for almost a decade and I've learned an amazing trick that has worked on 100% of dogs I've tried it on and is very safe from the human if done correctly.

  1. Get your hand ready, you're going to use your middle finger and your thumb to pince together so get your other fingers out of the way and get just the middle finger and the thumb ready to pince.
  2. Stand kind of behind and to the side of the dog, with the dog on the side of whichever is your dominant hand (right if you're a righty, left if you're a lefty).
  3. Move your ready to pince hand up behind their head and up to their muzzle.
  4. Like an arcade claw machine game you're gonna lower your hand down over their muzzle and slip your thumb and your finger behind their canine teeth MAKE SURE YOU BRING SOME OF THE DOG'S LIP WITH YOUR FINGERS!!!

Side note here: I know this seems like you're going to get bitten by putting your hands in a dog's mouth between their teeth but this is VERY CRUCIAL you MUST grab some of their lip with your fingers and bring their lip down into their teeth with your fingers so that they feel like if they bite down then they're just going to bite themselves. And don't put too much pressure or you'll hurt the dog.

100% of the time as soon as the dog feels their lips slip between their own teeth, their mouths will just open right up. They might start struggling a bit to try to break loose of your grip, but keep your pinced fingers firmly in place while with your other hand you remove the object from their mouths. You might not even have to reach in there because they sometimes drop what they're holding as soon as your slip your fingers in there. And if it feels like the lips are slipping out or the dog is going to break free, just get your fingers out of there and try again when the dog calms down.

Also just don't try this on a dog you're not familiar with, an unfamiliar dog might just turn around and bite you as soon as you get close. If there's some level of trust between you and the dog, there's no chance they'll bite you if done correctly. I've probably done this to like 40 different dogs in my life and it works 100% of the time.

Don't forget that bisexual and pansexual are included. It's very common for basically all women to identify as bisexual at least, because women sure are pretty!

ShaunaTheDead ,

Yeah I'm pretty sure the Borg nanites would just take over the necromorph virus or vice versa and they'd morph into one way worse thing.

ShaunaTheDead ,

Women are obsessed with true crime because we feel vulnerable, and so learning about it helps to hone our instincts to avoid dangerous situations. There's almost always some warning sign that people ignored and they ended up getting murdered. There's nothing wrong with true crime used as a cautionary tale. Are children sick because they read fairy tales about wolves eating grandmothers or witches cooking and eating children? Of course not. It's the same thing.

ShaunaTheDead ,

Is it? Neat! Good show, but it's been awhile since I saw it last.

ShaunaTheDead ,

No, you learn to recognize red flags from real life examples and make the right choices if you're ever in that situation.

They're talking about determining the origin of a sound. They're saying if a sound originates from anywhere on the line of the cone shape it becomes impossible to decipher where it originated accurately. Humans actually have decent vertical echolocation, but just like dogs do when they're trying to vertically echolocate we can also just face the approximate sound origin and tilt our heads to improve echolocation accuracy because our brains use the difference in elevation between our left and right ears to pinpoint the sound's location.
