beautiful bit of book history:

florid poem by Col. J. J. von Scheler in honor of the 54th birthday [when you're an enlightened despit, it doesn't have to be a round number] of Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg
Small folio from the presses of Court Printer Christoph Friedrich Cotta the elder, Stuttgart

Among the beauties of traditional printing, as book historians know, are the distinctive character and robust materiality.
Note here, the tactile quality of the rag paper (photo 1), the deep impression of type and ornament (2) and the way the border is assembled from individual ornamental pieces (3)

@dbellingradt may appreciate this

@bookhistodons

impression of title letters and title page ornament showing through on second page
small barely perceptible breaks in the ornamental border show how it was assembled from individual pieces of type

Post Canada's and Meta's ban on Canadian news content, sharing journalism on social media has been tough to say the least.

And yet The Tyee has seen much growth here on .

We want to see how far we can go. If you enjoy coming across Tyee stories on your Mastodon feeds, share our profile with your friends, or repost this toot, to help us get to 6,000 followers. 🐘🌟🗞

A pair of hands from the bottom right corner of the frame throws a folded newspaper — which reads "THE TYEE. News. Culture. Solutions. We put readers first!" — onto a beige surface. Another hand in the form of a thumbs-up appears enthusiastically from the left side of the frame.

@thetyee Oce again, you got this wrong. teh government passed a law to provide financial pealties for sites that allow links to news sites. In essence, the Government of Canada wants to reduce traffic that those sites send to news sites. New sites that disallows such links to avoid the financial penalties are merely complying with the law. That Google has agreed to give money to legacy media is just part of lobbying that happened behind closed doors. The law is bad and needs to be repealed

Bill C-18, or the Online News Act, has now come into effect. Between digital giants like Google and Meta, results have been mixed so far.

Tyee social media manager Sarah Krichel looks at how we got here — and what may lie ahead.

@thetyee The article says "with two-thirds (of Google money) to go to written media, such as newspapers", it is a bit misleading. Only content produced for online is eligible, print-content is not.

As the Canadian media landscape evolves with Meta shutting off news in response to the incoming Online News Act, and with increasing fake news on X, we're committed to bridging the gap between publishers and readers. We already partner with @CBC, @globeandmail, @hakaimagazine, Macleans, Daily Hive, @thetyee, Montecristo and more.

One of our Canadian editors, @AileenLalor, wrote how publishers can create a presence on our platform.

Canada's Online News Act (C18), which requires tech giants to pay news outlets, will become law at the end of this year. To circumvent this, Meta and Google have threatened to remove all links to Canadian news from their platforms, and they're already experimenting with selective bans. @thetyee has created this @Flipboard Storyboard with more details.
