I don't use any accounts for mail anymore, but I do check an old one occasionally. Today I found an email from Google from a few days ago warning me that they were going to delete an old account of mine. It seems perfectly legit, I haven't used that account in ages, and it was sent to a recovery email address.
And placed in Gmail's spam folder :-)

I remember the days when people were furious Google was scanning their emails to serve ads. Now we’ve reached the point that everything you send and receive is being filtered through its AI model and you’re expected to love it.

Today is the 20th anniversary of the launch of Gmail, Google’s email service that some interpreted as some kind of April Fools’ joke at the time. But it would go on to become a dominant player in the email space. Tech Radar takes a look back at Gmail’s rise that began when we still “demanded a hyphen between ‘e’ and ‘mail.’” https://flip.it/PD4MNI

This is a great step, BUT why did they allow bulk senders to send emails without proper standards until now? 🤔

But not every app developer does that.

@protonmail also suggested that I apply for the partner program, which I did but haven't heard back yet. Hoping to hear back in the next day or two and hoping that I get accepted.

Having two issues with @Tutanota at the moment.

  1. Emails are not being forwarded from my old Gmail account. I have verified it.

and

  1. All emails from @404mediaco go to my spam folder. I have changed spam rules for both the sender address and not 404-media.ghost.io but this hasn't helped. My old Protonmail, however, is receiving them without issue.

There is an ongoing spam attack on the fediverse for the last couple of days. It's more widespread than before, as attackers are targeting smaller servers to create accounts. Before, usually only mastodon.social was targeted and our team could take care of it. For server administrators out there: If you don't need open registrations, switch over to approval mode. If you do, blocking disposable e-mail providers is a massive stopgap to the problem. Mastodon also supports hCaptcha.

@Gargron "disposable e-mail providers"
lol in 2 years I've seen around 20 accounts trying to register on our instance. Gmail-share: 💯%!
It really is an advantage to only manage an instance for German-speaking users: more or less nobody registers with a address - and if a registration comes from , you can easily save yourself the verification work.

Just got an interesting phishing spam I’ve not seen before: mentioning the victims’ email addresses in comments in a google doc (that purported to list bank details for payroll). The interesting part us that the email is generated by and legit comes from Google. Victim clicks the link and, they hope, fills in their info.

lauren ,
@lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org avatar

@mattblaze Unfortunately, this is nothing new. While I believe that Google has taken some steps to limit this kind of Docs-based scam, they in general remain lackadaisical about spam/phishes they generate (as opposed to inbound spam/phishes), especially for , which probably generates about 50% or more of the phishes I see that hit non-Gmail sites.
