I'm not a "Linux Guy" really but I started re-evaluating it lately, and I think it might not just be for the Tech Weirdos anymore. It can absolutely be a daily driver for a lot of game developers now!
Looking forward to setting up my used #thinkpad with #linuxmint next week. Looking for recos for easy syncing, mainly for my #emacs and #orgmode stuff. What have you used that you could recommend? I do have GDrive working well on my Windows machines, so could go that route,, though not familiar with how to do that on linux. Thanks!
@nixCraft
I approve in spirit, but had I dogmatically done this I would have been unable to complete my undergrad and grad work.
Right tools for the job, and do better when you can 🤷
And yes of course, being required to use incredibly expensive proprietary software has no place in academia, but I was unable to fight that for my students even when I was TAing or teaching.
Usage : Steam, astrophoto, internet...
Votre avis, autre #distro à conseiller ?
"During the last two years we [#LinuxMint] didn’t observe significant differences in terms of stability between LTS and HWE series. Both were pretty stable. A growing number of users with new laptops/chipsets relied on EDGE images to be able to install Linux Mint though."
Now is the time for those like I who think MS have jumped the shark, to move to Linux. The Linux OS itself is great, software vendor support is still lacking, i ditched Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop as the hardest.
There are work arounds and some UI time needed but when I occasionally jump onto a Windows install it seems odd already, so adaptation is fairly quick
I had been using Windows since 3.1 upto W10 and MS Dos prior to that.
I'd suggest #LinuxMint or #LMDE as a great place to start. 12 months later I am still there.
#Linux is like a Chinese copy of an #OS with poorly written documentation and badly fitting parts. I'm trying to load #Mozilla#Thunderbird on #Linux_Mint but the instructions are gibberish. e.g. instructions say following libraries or packages are needed:
glibc 2.17 or higher
GTK+ 3.14 or higher
libdbus-glib 0.6.0 or higher
libglib 2.42 or higher
libstdc++ 4.8.1 or higher
libxtst 1.2.3 or higher
X.Org 1.0 or higher
Why isn't there a way to check if my Mint install already has them?
@Yoshi#LinuxMint is (should be) quite user-friendly, and you should be able to do 99% of what you want without needing to use the command line.
In terms of installing software, think of #Linux more like Android than Windows. In Android you don't go to a website to download and install apps; you go to the Play Store. Similarly in Linux, you can install most applications via the distribution's software center.
Your periodic reminder that Stellarium is an amazing planetarium tool. Free, #OpenSource and very easy to use. There are desktop apps, mobile apps and a web version.
Just installed #Whalebird on #LinuxMint and it looks pretty nice. I've only used the web interface previously on my computers. but thought I'd check out a dedicated app or two.
After years of Linux Mint being my primary Distro I have installed Fedora with XFCE desktop on my spare laptop. Here is how it looks after customizing it a little. #linux#fedora#linuxmint 👇👇👇👇
I need a distro that can work right out the box without too much hassle to configure it, which one would you recommend?
Thx in advice.
