I've just started reading Kathleen Hanna's autobiography, 'Rebel Girl'. I'm 5% in and it's enthralling, in a few different ways, as you can tell from the quotes.

@bookstodon

I want to tell you how I write songs and produce music. How singing makes me feel connected to a million miracles at once. How being onstage is the one place I feel the most me. But I can’t untangle all of that from the background that is male violence. I wish I could forget the guy who stalked me while I was making my solo record. How he sat on the roof of the building across from mine and looked into my windows with binoculars as I worked. How he told my neighbors he thought I was a prostitute who “needed to be stopped.” I wish I could slice him out of my story as a musician, but I can’t. I also don’t want this book to be a list of traumas, so I’m leaving a lot of that on the cutting room floor. It’s more important to remember that I’ve seen ugly basement rooms transform into warm campfires, dank rock-bro clubs become bright parties where girls and gay kids and misfits danced together in a sea of freedom and joy, art galleries that had only ever showcased white male mediocrity become sites of thrilling feminist collaborations. I also ate gelato on a street in Milan with my bandmates and cried because it tasted THAT FUCKING GOOD. But yeah, there were also rapes and run-ins with assholes who threw water on my shine. I keep trying to make my rapes funny, but I have to stop doing that because they aren’t. I want them to be stories because stories are made up of words, and words can’t hurt me.
I had hair down to my butt in the second grade, but my mom got sick of washing it, took out her sewing shears, and gave me the ugliest short haircut imaginable.
My sister was always in trouble, and not just because she was bullied at school and screamed back at men—but because she had a father who stared at her like she was a Playboy Bunny and not his own daughter. When they fought, which was often, it sounded like cats fighting, if the cats were a teenage girl and a full-grown man. All I wanted to do was escape that sound. I spent a lot of time on our front stoop with my hands over my ears, trying to make a facial expression that was the equivalent of writing “help” in a fogged-up window.

Until high school, Kate Feiffer believed that her mother Judy's novel, "A Hot Property," was about real estate. Then a boyfriend plucked the book from the shelves, started reading passages aloud, and revealed it was a piece of 1970s erotica. From then until just a few years ago, Kate considered "A Hot Property" to be her literary Waterloo — the book she'd hoped to conquer but never been able to. But after her mother's death, she picked up the novel and — between bouts of screaming and cringing — found something more thoughtful and reflective than she was expecting. Here's what she wrote for LitHub.

What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

I'm working on a some materials for a class wherein I'll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we're including a section we're calling "foot guns". Basically it's ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....

Let a narcisist bipolar family member onto my home server for phaseI. For phaseII I granted too much access in sudo because I was busy. Fast forward a year or two and a downswing triggers the victim rage and he attempts to wreck my server after a minor argument -- would have, too, if I wasn't keenly aware of a conversation he had a few weeks before where he detailed "how to fuck with someone horribly" to a peer and I used that recollection to reverse the damage. It was a lucky thing, and 25 years on I have better security and backup processes.

I still regret that. , right?

From 2010 to 2017, there was a thing called that we Aseans started as a grassroots movement. We were all bloggers from across, well, or South-East Asia.

Some of us joined together to produce one of the best multi-authored regional blogs. We talked about our cultures, write about what makes the region awesome. As well as, try to address the oftentimes silly and sometimes heated debates.

It's all gone now. Forgotten. The blogs dead or offline. We all grew up, got busy with our personal lives, and moved on separately. And the important reason? We lost interest in it as we started to see ASEAN was, is, and will never be for the grassroots.

That was the end of what was once a vibrant grassroot ASEAN Citizens effort. We did it all voluntarily. Without a single recognition from the top-down organisation that is ASEAN.

I had friends from , , , , , , , , and yes, even from (). (I'm from the .) It was fun. It was not tiring at all. It was because we saw a bright future for ASEAN, and we believed in it completely.

But today? ASEAN is still a top-down organisation. They kept trying to get the grassroots involved, but they are always failing. Why? Because it is a top-down organisation, as simple as that. They will never understand until they shift their mindset and approach to bottom-up.

Who is ASEAN really for?

(P.S I want to restart this grassroots movement, but I just no longer have the spark. Give me a very good reason why I should give it another chance. Or, at least, guide the new generation.)

@ubi Haha, true! It is 99% impossible to get ASEANs to use the fediverse. We can forget the fediverse, just Threads itself is being ignored even though Instagram is very popular in the region.

It's only Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Plurk, in that particular order. ^_^

The reasons for this are (at least based from experience and observation):

  1. Family connections.
  2. Fandoms + official accounts of their idols
  3. Government accounts.

I am hoping that Threads can make fandoms and those official accounts to create Threads with Fediverse. Theoretically, it can be helpful in getting a huge chunk to move to the Fediverse

(Unfortunately, there is an anti-fandom vocal minority in the Fediverse, who's trying to gatekeep the network. /facepalm)

Another one that's good are government accounts with fediverse enabled.

But, until those happen, those 5 SNS platforms will remain.

As for language, except for the and , English is not an official language in the 8 member Nations (even though English is the official language of the organisation itself). Many can speak English, but it's more natural for them to speak in their local languages.

There are ASEANs in the fediverse network, but in the grand scheme of things… we're still few and a minority.

In America, married people get more than 1,000 legal benefits that single people can't access. Vox's Sigal Samuel asks why people in a platonic partnership can't enjoy the same kind of benefits, and why society values friendships less than familial relationships and marriages. Do you have a "best friend?"

In my teenage years I was often told, if I continue to have antipatriarchal views in life, I'll end up as an old single woman with a cat. I'd get offended with the idea of it & continued to waste my time on such inane debates. Speaking from experience, it's the best thing that can happen to you. If anyone says that to you, thank that person profusely for you've been blessed. Who wouldn't want to spend an eternity with 🐈‍⬛️🐕?? Happiness is being with your furry companions.
