The EU is getting ready to launch an investigation into Meta over its handling of election-related content, reports @engadget
Full details of the investigation are expected later this week, but concerns have reportedly been raised about “deceptive advertising and political content” on Meta’s platforms. EU officials are also unhappy about Meta’s plan to shut down CrowdTangle in August, a move the researchers and fact checkers who use the tool have called a “direct threat to election integrity efforts around the world.”
#Meta should just offer people in #Europe (& the rest of the planet) a simple option: either opt in to have your personal information sold to advertisers, or pay a fee to use #Facebook, #Instagram, #WhatsApp & #Threads.
It works for #YouTube (I pay them to avoid ads), as well as other news organizations. It’s really that simple.
I love that this is about an Instagram-based fraudster, and the presiding judge's name is Block.
"INSTAGRAM INFLUENCER KNOWN AS “JAY MAZINI” SENTENCED TO
84 MONTHS IN PRISON FOR OVERLAPPING FRAUD SCHEMES
Defendant Capitalized on His Social Media Persona to Commit Fraud, Including a Scheme That Bilked the Muslim Community Out of Over $8 Million
"Earlier today, in federal court in Brooklyn, Jebara Igbara, also known as “Jay Mazini,” was sentenced by United States District Judge Frederic Block to 84 months in prison for wire fraud, wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering arising out of multiple schemes that resulted in millions of dollars in loss to trusting investors. Igbara pleaded guilty to the charges in November 2022. As set forth in the information, up until March 2021, Igbara maintained a popular Instagram account under the name “Jay Mazini,” where he would post videos depicting, among other things, occasions during which he would hand out large amounts of cash to various individuals as gifts. In reality, Igbara was perpetrating overlapping fraud schemes, scamming investors out of at least $8 million. As part of his sentence, Igbara was ordered to pay $10 million in forfeiture. The amount of restitution will be determined at a later date."

«Les plateformes doivent donner aux utilisateurs un véritable choix. Les systèmes que nous voyons aujourd’hui exigent généralement des individus soit qu’ils paient soit qu’ils acceptent l’usage de toutes leurs données»
Instagram will start blurring nude images sent to minors, in a crackdown against teen "sextortion."
As @theverge reports, the new safety measures will be turned on worldwide for users under 18, along with warnings to discourage users from sending them.
TikTok is preparing to launch its own Instagram rival, called TikTok Notes.
A TikTok spokesperson confirmed to @TechCrunch that an app is in the works, after users received pop-up notifications stating the new app was "coming soon".
Every time, you think it couldn't get any worse, a new revelation tops it off. As an author, I wonder how long it will take for the book market to be completely enshittified.

From 2010 to 2017, there was a thing called #AseanCitizen that we Aseans started as a grassroots movement. We were all bloggers from across, well, #ASEAN or South-East Asia.
Some of us joined together to produce one of the best multi-authored regional blogs. We talked about our cultures, write about what makes the region awesome. As well as, try to address the oftentimes silly and sometimes heated debates.
It's all gone now. Forgotten. The blogs dead or offline. We all grew up, got busy with our personal lives, and moved on separately. And the important reason? We lost interest in it as we started to see ASEAN was, is, and will never be for the grassroots.
That was the end of what was once a vibrant grassroot ASEAN Citizens effort. We did it all voluntarily. Without a single recognition from the top-down organisation that is ASEAN.
But today? ASEAN is still a top-down organisation. They kept trying to get the grassroots involved, but they are always failing. Why? Because it is a top-down organisation, as simple as that. They will never understand until they shift their mindset and approach to bottom-up.
(P.S I want to restart this grassroots movement, but I just no longer have the spark. Give me a very good reason why I should give it another chance. Or, at least, guide the new generation.)
@ubi Haha, true! It is 99% impossible to get ASEANs to use the fediverse. We can forget the fediverse, just Threads itself is being ignored even though Instagram is very popular in the region.
It's only Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Plurk, in that particular order. ^_^
The reasons for this are (at least based from experience and observation):
Family connections.
Fandoms + official accounts of their idols
Government accounts.
I am hoping that Threads can make fandoms and those official accounts to create Threads with Fediverse. Theoretically, it can be helpful in getting a huge chunk to move to the Fediverse
(Unfortunately, there is an anti-fandom vocal minority in the Fediverse, who's trying to gatekeep the network. /facepalm)
Another one that's good are government accounts with fediverse enabled.
But, until those happen, those 5 SNS platforms will remain.
As for language, except for the #Philippines and #Singapore, English is not an official language in the 8 member Nations (even though English is the official language of the organisation itself). Many can speak English, but it's more natural for them to speak in their local languages.
There are ASEANs in the fediverse network, but in the grand scheme of things… we're still few and a minority.
WhatsApp goes down in Meta’s second big outage this year.
@TechCrunch reports: "Users are also reporting issues accessing Instagram and Messenger, according to social media posts and crowdsourced reporting sites like Downdector."
I've been doing this side by side Pixelfed vs Instagram thing at the end of each month. I am posting the same content on both platforms, seeing what the differences look like in terms of engagement.
As I have said before, I've been tracking my followers, likes on each post, comments, and other calculated statistics on both my Pixelfed and Instagram account to see what the difference really is between using the two mediums.
The results? Well, we're 3 months into 2024 and I think there's some common trends I'm noticing.
Overall since 2024 began - I am averaging the following:
22 likes per post on Instagram and 9 likes per post on Pixelfed.
Now here's an interesting piece of data - likes per follower.
On Instagram, I'm currently at 0.05 likes for every follower, or about the equivalent to 5% of my followers actually liking my posts. For Pixelfed, it's 0.08 likes per follower or 8% of my followers liking my posts.
It's small, but there's more likes per follower on Pixelfed than Instagram.
Also, I've noted that since the beginning of the year - I've increased my follower count by 61 on Instagram and by 36 on Pixelfed.
That's a 16% increase on Insta and a 41% increase on Pixelfed. It helps that my Pixelfed follower count is are lower. But, also, it makes the reach of my Pixelfed account vs my Instagram account a bit more impressive when your realize I have 3 times as many Instagram followers than I do on Pixelfed.
