Good Lord.

Every WiFi network access point that has ever been in range of an iPhone has its network name (SSID) and GPS location (taken from the iPhone) stored and used by Apple.

Apple introduced a way to opt out in March 2024 - you must append the string "_nomap" to your SSID.

Is there an issue with the search index on infosec.exchange?

When I search for

from:@fossdev@fosstodon.org

I see no results, even though they've been tooting up a storm.

When I search for

from:@timkmak@journa.host

The latest post I see is from 2023-12-26, though I see his toots on infosec.exchange daily.

Or am I just misunderstanding how indexing/searching works?

The strangest thing you can barely if ever buy on Amazon is usb wall worts for other countries. There are 1 million giant klunky converters with outlets, but not just a cheap usb wall plug for your phone or GAN for your usb-c laptop. With how much stuff is just USB today, that's absolutely wild.

I saw these unusual multicolor images posted on walls that look sort of like qr codes all over the Barcelona subway system, and learned that they are NaviLens codes that provide accessibility for folks with vision impairments.

They're getting a lot of uptake on public transport in the U.S., Europe and UK. They're also used on product packaging in grocery stores. The MTA in New York City is starting to roll them out.

If you notice them in your neighborhood, download the app and give it a try. It's amazingly cool.

How Cambridge bred eugenics

"The term “eugenics” (from the Greek for ‘well born’) was birthed here in Cambridge by Trinity’s own Francis Galton in 1883. Galton was inspired by his cousin Charles Darwin and adapted the idea of natural selection to presuppose that the survival of the fittest had been distorted by social welfare policies."

Basically when the Gaza war stops, Bibi gets voted out, prosecuted, and goes to prison. He's spent years doing deals to stay in power and defer the cases against him. He was always genocidal, sure, but now he's motivated.

My unpopular and slightly weird position is none of this would be happening if Israel had a written constitution, and they don't because they had no way to talk about the Nakba in legal language.

    BradRubenstein ,
    @BradRubenstein@infosec.exchange avatar

I was thinking that, although the U.S. has a constitution, its attempts at talking about its (native american) Nakba in legal language have also been pretty broken.

I'm reading the recently released "The Cost of Free Land: Jews, Lakota, and an American Inheritance" by Rebecca Clarren (disclaimer: a distant cousin), and thinking about our own Jewish ancestors involvement in that other Nakba.

Hey ho! My friend Steven Damron just released his debut novel, Dear Mustafa, on Jan 1.

I found it to be quite a good read, with lots of twists, the events bouncing between '80s San Francisco and '00s New York. It's about activism, art, friendship, mystery, technology, and love. The characters are quirky.

If you are a librarian or are in a book club that might want to get it, let me know. If you're game, please boost for reach, and check it out if you're so inclined.

Whenever someone raised the spectre of being able to edit posts on Twitter, the rapid rebuttal was that this was a bad idea.

People would abuse it, and others would be left having retweeted edited posts with which they no longer wanted to be affiliated.
