Sony and 4 other companies basically own all music. If they can opt out, it gives them a defacto monopoly on any music generators. The AI music is still going to come and artists aren't getting a dime either way except maybe some big names that don't need the money anyways.

There is nothing to be gained from taking Sony's side here. Sony is a pos company that exploits all the artists under it. It will exploit it's data to create more profit through AI, without paying them.

Its either open source AI anyone can run at home or closed source AI that only a few companies can legally run, offered with a hefty subscription fee and censorship.

Grimy ,

Sony is probably working on a music generator as we speak. So it's not like Sony vs AI but Sony AI Monopoly vs Diverse AI ecosystem including FOSS.

I also consider the data stolen in either case, since Sony isn't going to give a dime more to their artists when they either sell the data or come out with their own software. Actually, if everyone owns it and can use it to train, I see it more as sharing tbh.

I guess I might be bias, I hate these fat cat companies trying to strangle new tech so we have to lick their boots while using it.

Slack is now using all content, including DMs, to train LLMs ( mastodon.sdf.org )

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/15741608...

We offer customers a choice around these practices. If you want to exclude your Customer Data from helping to train Slack global models, you can opt out. If you opt out, Customer Data on your workspace will only be used to improve the experience on your own workspace and you will still enjoy all of the benefits of our globally trained Al/ML models without contributing to the underlying models.

If copyrights apply, only you and stack own the data. You can opt out but 99% of users don't. No users get any money. Google or Microsoft buys stack so only they can use the data. We only get subscription based AI, open source dies.

If copyrights don't apply, everyone owns the data. The users still don't get any money but they get free open source AI built off their work instead of closed source AI built off their work.

Having the website have copyright of the content in the context of AI training would be a fucking disaster.

Grimy ,

Each time this pops up, there is a rush of people saying to delete or edit your comments.

They have a database of your comments and all your edits. Its easy to see when you mass delete or edit them. Anything done past a certain point in time, especially all at once, is automatically reverted.

By deleting and editing, you are taking the data away from scrappers making the dataset they are selling actually unique and more valuable.

Grimy , (edited )

I think you need to make a special request to get that level of deletion that comes with gdpr. I'm not certain, I just remember other users specifically talking about how you need to send them an email so they have to comply.

I also wouldn't be surprised if their dataset is mostly stripped of user names to get around GDPR though I'm no expert.

All that to say I'd be very very surprised if they deleted comments in their dataset.

Very valid point of devaluating the user experience thought, especially when you take into account google searches. I'm sure they have already fallen off compared to a year ago where reddit would pop up half the time no matter what you searched.

Google unveils Veo, a high-definition AI video generator that may rival Sora ( arstechnica.com )

On Tuesday at Google I/O 2024, Google announced Veo, a new AI video-synthesis model that can create HD videos from text, image, or video prompts, similar to OpenAI's Sora. It can generate 1080p videos lasting over a minute and edit videos from written instructions, but it has not yet been released for broad use.

Grimy ,

Why not?

I want to have fun generating my own shows and movies eventually. Just for my own fun. You can literally just not use it.

Grimy ,

Tbh, it's going to be a lot cheaper and easier to use computer vision with regular 20$ webcams.

The only advantage I can see is for the elderly as a warning system, since certain changes in body temp are a precursor to health problems.

This is an awesome product outside of home automation though.

How to work with someone that regularly arrives as the wrong answer?

I work with a person that went presented with a problem, works through it and arrives at the wrong solution. When I have them show me the steps they took, it seems like they interpret things incorrectly. This isn't a language barrier, and it's not like they aren't reading what someone wrote....

Grimy ,

They are being difficult, it's quite clear what happened.

Anyways, no matter how vague you are, it isn't normal to think the email is the thing that needs sending when the email chain itself is about sending out a product.

Sounds like he has some form of dyslexia. Best thing to do is be as clear as you can with him and expect him to take things very literally. Its a tough line to walk though since it's easy to come off as patronizing and have him feel insulted.

Grimy ,

What part don't you understand?

Grimy ,

What part needs translating? What is it that you find hard to understand?

Grimy ,

I'm only replying because you were asking me to translate it and talking about variables. You aren't making much sense yourself and I was asking you to specify specifically because I'm not going to rewrite his whole post lol.

Grimy ,

Its the equivalent of putting his hands on his ears and screaming childish babbling to drown you out.

Grimy ,

I'm not saying it's a bad move, but that won't stop drilling.

The effort should be aimed at destroying the oil industry.

Grimy ,

This particular model isn't on there yet but ollama is pretty user friendly if you have a bit of experience using a command line interface.

Lmstudio has a better UI but is quite a bit slower.

Grimy ,

With right-wing leaning people not favoring regulation.

Do you want to explain why you think this? It seems very reductive, basically saying anyone that doesn't agree with you is an idiot.

I'm very left leaning and against regulation because it will only serve big companies by killing the open source scene.

The bigger defining factor seems to be tech literacy and not political alignment.

Grimy ,

That's true and all but this decision is solely about oil barons and their fat fucking profits.

Its no coincidence that they are going after electric cars and solar panels. Chinese workers have had it rough for 30 years but green tech is where we draw the line and not literally everything else, who believes this?

Its not to protect the economy, it's not to protect the Chinese workers.

This is only about oil profits.

Grimy ,

And the government just realized this now and are going to make it clear it isn't okay by fucking up any export out of China that has the word green in it.

Nothing to do with oil money folks, just China got caught red handed and we just weren't looking before. Yes, you can still keep your iPhone but fuck your solar panels and any car that doesn't crave gasoline.

Grimy ,

Every car manufacturer receives massive subsidies no matter where they are located.

This is oil money, nothing more, nothing less.

Grimy , (edited )

They don't want them to, they want you to keep using gas.

Grimy ,

What we call a bear these days isn't a bear.

Because languages change over time and words take on new different meanings.

Grimy ,

It just means there's a bias in the data that is probably being amplified during training.

It answers what's relevant according to its training.

Grimy ,

The EU has restated its readiness to launch a trade war with China over imports of cheap electric cars, steel and cheap solar and wind technology.

Grimy ,

All companies working in the energy and transport sector receive vast subsidies and financial help from whatever country they are located in.

This isn't about unfair practices, since it's literally a common practice. This is to protect oil companies and the car makers who took bribes instead of pivoting and are now feeling that decision.

Grimy ,

Electric cars
Solar panels
Wind tech

Everything else doesn't directly compete with their oil monopoly. They should keep their tariffs for when we aren't on the cusp of an ecological collapse, bunch of corrupt cunts.

Grimy ,

That's fine but like you said, nothing else is being targeted. Out of all the products, they specifically target the ones leading to a greener, less oil dependant society.

You were asking why it's being targeted and it's specifically not because they are ignoring labor rights, worker safety or environmental protections.

Tesla Lays Off Entire Team Behind Brakes ( www.theonion.com )

AUSTIN, TX—In the latest round of layoffs for the company’s struggling automotive division, electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla fired the entire team behind brakes, sources confirmed Wednesday. “As we continue to rightsize the Tesla workforce, we have come to the decision that stopping the car is no longer a critical...

Grimy ,

Capitalism doesn't need to stop, brakes are for commies

Grimy ,

I'd read that novel. I bet you could find a lot of creative uses for all that rapture talk.

Grimy ,

Thats why the money should be used to invest and diversify not help oil baron hoard even more wealth.

Grimy ,

I prefer winter tires but you just never change them.

Grimy ,

Open AI isn't posting news articles.

Is adobe to blame because someone photoshopped trump without hair?

Palestinian released from Israeli prison describes beatings, sexual abuse and torture ( www.haaretz.com )

Among candidates for U.S. sanctions, Israel's Prison Service should be next on the list. This is apparently the realm where all the sadistic instincts of the minister of national security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, find their outlet....

Grimy , (edited )

There's a lot more dead Palestinian children than dead Israeli prisoners. Its also hard to pretend Hamas isnt a direct consequence of decades of oppression, or that half the population of Palestine are children and most never even had a chance in the decision yet they are the ones receiving most of the missles.

Or the difference in fire power. Israel could just pull out if they wanted to, the ratio of deaths between both nations is ridiculous.

Sure Hamas sucks but Israel is literally committing genocide with international help. So ya, one side is worse and ignoring the fact is being willfully ignorant. There is nothing to defend here, abusing prisoners is shit and it's well known that Israel was just grabbing men off the street to toss in jail, so a lot of them probably did nothing to deserve it.

Grimy ,

Nobody likes seeing woman, LGBTQ and freedom of speech rights getting attacked. Its just any sane person likes genocide even less.

Not to mention Israel essentially created Hamas.

Grimy ,

There are way more uses cases to the average person than crypto so that's only natural. There's also a trust issue with crypto that doesn't exist with AI, as well as losing your money when things go wrong.

That being said, I don't approve of this nor adding it randomly to products where it clearly has little use. If people want generative software, they can just choose to install it.

Grimy ,

I meant more a trust issue in the sense that it's hard for people to feel safe putting their money into crypto. A lot of the coins are scammy and even some of the exchanges don't really look legit.

In terms of privacy and collecting data which is what I feel like you are referring too, the general population sadly just doesn't give a shit. Most really don't care about what's being done with their data.

Grimy ,

I highly suggest the good lord bird mini series where John Brown is played by Ethan Hawke to anyone interested.

Grimy ,

"would you love Jesus if he was a worm?"

Grimy ,

That color can be found in a rainbow and would lead to offense. Good Christians only use the white Gatorade, coconut flavor.

ChatGPT provides false information about people, and OpenAI can’t correct it ( noyb.eu )

It’s clear that companies are currently unable to make chatbots like ChatGPT comply with EU law, when processing data about individuals. If a system cannot produce accurate and transparent results, it cannot be used to generate data about individuals. The technology has to follow the legal requirements, not the other way...

Grimy ,

That would get it banned in the US, not the eu.

Grimy ,

Here's a better metaphor because yours completely misses the mark when it comes to the difference between an LLM and an actual encyclopedia.

A painter will spend years honing his craft by studying other paintings as well as photos and real life. If you ask him to paint you a house from memory and try to build it with what he gives you, that just makes you an idiot, it doesn't make him a bad architect.

Chatgpt is not an encyclopedia and any thing it says that is remotely important to your personal or work life should be verified. They explicitly tell you it can and will give false responses.

Grimy ,

I think the fact that we are able to record everything that happens and automatically upload it seriously outweighs what you are saying.

The only reason cops get in trouble is only because people are filming. If it's not caught on camera, it didn't happen in the eyes of the law if it's just our word against a cops.

Grimy ,

Video games and movie generation I think mostly. Llms will probably be running constantly in the background in next gen rpgs so players can have actual conversations with NPCs. Voice cloning isn't necessary but you can get better mannerisms with it currently I'm pretty sure.

I can also see celebrities and voice actors wanting to sell their voice. It doesn't require much work and voice actors are talented enough that they can offer personalized characters with different speech patterns and what not.

Grimy ,

I am acknowledging I made a false claim and I'm asking you to correct me by asking this question. What's your position? All you have told me is what your position isn't.

Grimy ,

By being an unprovable claim, the burden of absolute proof cannot be on either side since that would constitute an appeal to ignorance.

This may vary by region but in mine, saying something is a myth means it's 100% unequivocally false.

So in this context, saying something is false because of some as of yet very very unlikely scenario seems like misrepresentation.

That's basically what my real issue was with all this.

Grimy ,

Its likelier than Zeus being up there with lightning bolts and what not.

I agree there is a possibility but that doesn't make the more likely scenario a myth.

Grimy ,

Nobody that has claimed to have found two seperate identical fingerprints has been able to back that up either. I'm pretty sure most myths are associated with the unlikeliest scenario and not the opposite like you are doing. By their very nature they are usually outlandish, religiously outlandish or old wives tales that turned out to be false.

You're basically saying "it's a myth that spiders don't crawl into our mouths as we sleep". It kind of makes the opposite sound like a regular occurrence and saying "we haven't watched every person sleep throughout history to know if it's 100% always the case" is not a valid reason to say it

Grimy ,

Where is your proof that two fingerprints can be the same?

And before it comes about, the absence of proof isn't proof. "Could ofs" and "maybe exists" don't really cut it. I hope you understand this is why appeals to ignorance don't work and you can't use the fact that we haven't gathered all data especially when all the current data point squarely point one way.

This is why labeling something as false, a myth or a fantasy needs more than just a slight possibility.

We could label physics as a myth by arguing we just haven't found the cases in which it doesn't work yet. These things have happened before and there's always a slight possibility but to bungle about saying it's a myth is a bit silly imo.

Grimy ,

It is a myth because it is not a provable claim

This is what you wrote. Is "Fingerprints aren't all unique" a provable claim? This is why your logic isn't sound, it can be applied to all of it and makes things that clearly aren't myths into myths. And practically nothing is provable beyond a doubt especially when you need all data in all of space and time as you imply.

You basically explained it to yourself with the spider example.

Grimy ,

We have no idea if there has ever been two people with the same fingerprints. It’s never been tested and there’s no way to test it since the majority of people who have existed are now dead.

Do you understand that your logic applies to both and is meaningless. I changed three letters and it still makes perfect sense. You can't label things as myths because edge cases might exist somewhere in the known universe.

But please, if you don't want to interact with me, I invite you to not reply.
