Archaeologist / Graphic Designer / High Functioning Potato / Scavenger / Cheapskate Gardener / Loved by dogs / Tolerated by cats

I live in the Dystopian Disunited Kingdom. I'm here to be informed of corruption, nebulous networks and shady government plans.

Really, I'm just a high-functioning potato, so cut me some slack 😏

FYI, someone just asked me, "Could you please put a CW on those US politics posts?"

I said no sorry,, just mute me.

I don't understand CWing political posts. And that doesn't mean you need to @ me explaining why. I know THEIR reasons, I just disagree with them and won't do it.

I respect CWs for other things, but not politics. Politics is news and people need to be aware of what's happening. It's not gory or violent, it's politics.

Kthxbye.

What if someone took those flying cars from Blade Runner and turned it into an open world sandbox game?

That is Crime Cities. But saying this is similar to Blade Runner doesn't even scratch the surface.

In terms of gameplay, Crime Cities is like a cross between Descent and Grand Theft Auto. You're in a flying car, cruising a crime-infested city, looking for random missions to earn money.

These missions vary considerably. One mission, you make a delivery. On another, you taxi someone to a strip club. Yet on another mission, you act as a bounty hunter and must gun some criminals down.

The story is pretty fantastic too. You're on a literal prison planet, trying to infiltrate a criminal organization, trying to stop a potential terrorists. Or at least, that's what your handlers say. It all gets very murky quickly.

What especially makes this stand out, though, is the aesthetic. Oh yes, you have the art deco stylings of Blade Runner. But because this game came out in 2000, there's lots of Y2K stuff going on too. One of the NPCs is actually called CyberDog (like the Apple web browser), and he's wearing an ocular device similar to the R-Zone.

It just amazes me too that, back in 2000, email was seen as the height of futurism. They really thought that, in terms of communication, things wouldn't get better than receiving electronic text. And perhaps they had a point because email has not been replaced as the primary communications platform for 50 years, so maybe we will be using it in the faraway future. I'm nevertheless impressed.

Techland made this game. They're famous for the Dying Light and Dead Island series. But they also made one of my favourite Western FPS games of all time, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. That company is one of the reasons I watch game development in Poland so much.

If you plan on getting this game, I have some advice. First of all, restart your computer after installing -- otherwise the menus will have excruciating lag. Also, do not run this game with a 16:9 or 16:10 ratio because your HUD will be cut off. Be sure to keep this at 4:3.

Once you get past those hiccups, this is quite fun! Nothing is quite like cruising around a cyberpunk landscape in your flying car. That, right there, makes it worth it.

Currently, GOG.com has this available for a -79% off its regular price of C$4.65. It's selling for C$0.99. If you're looking for a novel experience, this is a killer deal.

Real thought:

What depresses me most about the state of the world at present is that we've stopped caring to live up to the spirit of our ideals.

When we fail them and are pressed, we can rationalize our terrible actions based on technicalities - and large swaths of our culture have normalized doing this very thing.

It is my most sincere hope that we can walk our way back from this. I see some signs of this, but would prefer to see many more.

I think its a form of normalcy bias, a denial that certain things can be happening, that what we face is intolerable...but it can't be, that's simply not allowed.
and some who commit atrocities, that capitalise on this bias.

Free eggs from the uncared for chickens on the allotment. They have started to sleep in my compost because its warm and dry, and I'm currently getting an egg each morning.
Meanwhile Stigg (the owner) is hunting all over the field for eggs and not finding any.
He says the birds don't go in anyone else's area so he can't really ask for the eggs. Anyway, he isn't talking to me so...
He really should take better care of his livestock.
They are my chickens now.

Yesterday I had one person say I'm too so pro-tech pro-capitalist and one person say I was trying to force a leftist ideology, and both were responding to A City on Mars. All I can say is I wish people would stop trying to find the hidden motive and just read the words as plainly written!

Wild strawberry is lovely, but I made the mistake of putting some in the woodland bank in the alley and they took over. No matter how many I dig out there are always more in there. Now, when I remove them, I add the plants to the bits of the alley I'm ok to have covered in wild strawberry plants.

I had a similar thing with Vinted. I put up and advert and they banned me saying they thought it was fraudulent. I provided proof it wasn't and they reinstated me, but with zero apology for their defamation.
Big companies can do whatever they wish when you can't afford a solicitor to stop them.

My day started with a walk in the park. There was an elderly lady walking her little dog, and she decided to play with me. The lady was trying to go home, but the little one wanted to stay with me. Since we knew each other by sight, we agreed that the dog would stay with me all morning while she ran errands. In the late morning, she returned, and the dog happily went back home with her. I had the honor of spending a few hours of pure joy and carefreeness, rediscovering the pleasures of simple things.
Sometimes, in life, we should just take a few hours to stop and see the world through the eyes of a dog.

You can create threads on Mastodon using the traditional method:

  1. Post first part of thread
  2. Reply to first part with second part
  3. Reply to second part with third etc

Some third-party apps and services also have thread creation tools.

It's a good idea to number threads so that people who notice one part will explore the rest.

Also, set first post to "public" visibility but replies to "unlisted", to avoid filling public timelines.

Lots more info on threads at https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-post-a-thread-on-mastodon/

MostlyTato ,
@MostlyTato@mstdn.social avatar

@feditips
I'd definitely emphasise the unlisted thing. I see so many threads that fill my entire timeline because people don't know this. I want to read the entire thread anyway but I don't want it to block out everything else on my timeline.

Yes, it must confuse the feck out of the dog after its gone to all that trouble to mark its territory. Stoopid hoomans.
