I'm going to play scientist here and not knee-jeek call these people names. Is there actually any evidence of viable viral transmission in raw cow's milk? The expression and transmission of viruses in human breast milk is an extremely complex subject. Antibodies are often expressed in breast milk, and active viruses are only sometimes expressed, with highly variable infection rates among infants based on the type of virus. So my genuine question: What evidence is there supporting this warning not to drink raw milk for fear of H5N1 transmission?

protist ,

The possibility of bacterial growth in unpasteurized milk is without question, but this clearly states there is no known evidence that flu virus can be passed through raw milk. So why are there official warnings being issued about this? I want to be clear I don't think drinking raw milk is a good idea, but I also want the public to trust our institutions, and putting out a warning based on zero evidence doesn't foster trust

Hide your cotton, he's looking for a home

protist ,

Though its spread everywhere ... indicates that it might start jumping to humans soon

While this is certainly a possibility, and we should be prepared for it, there isn't any indication to think it will suddenly become transmissible between humans this time. There have been over a thousand confirmed cases of H5N1 in humans over the past 20 years, and all were caught directly from an animal and not spread between humans.

protist ,

The mortality rate is high, but the sample is also heavily skewed toward low income, rural farming populations in developing countries like Indonesia, Egypt, and Cambodia, where outbreaks of 10-30 cases are not uncommon. Survival rates among the few cases in the US and Europe have been 100%, with one death in Canada

protist ,

Because it's been transmitted to humans over a thousands times over the past 20 years, and this upswing isn't particularly worse than previous outbreaks, it's just in the news more because it's happening in the US. There have been massive avian flu outbreaks before in other countries

protist ,

You can absolutely bet this strain is being accounted for in the annual flu vaccine that will be released in the fall

protist ,

It's already been developed, it would just need to be produced. The timeline on mass producing a flu vaccine is a matter of a few months since the infrastructure to produce hundreds of millions of doses each year already exists

protist ,

It feels like you're picking quotes from articles that are lacking context. Yes, the US has a stockpile of several hundred thousand H5N1 vaccines, and no, that wouldn't cover everyone, but the capacity exists to ramp up production quickly and have hundreds of millions of doses available to the US public within 3-4 months.

Yes, producing 4-8 billion doses of any vaccine is going to take time. Obviously the country that develops, tests, and manufactures a new vaccine is going to fund production for its own people first. That "elite" dig is just not necessary.

"My little Johnny was a perfect student until the medical establishment gave him a learning disability!"

This seems to overlap psychologically with the "my child can do no wrong" crowd, the ones who blame teachers, coaches, librarians, video games, sugar, red dye, gluten, participation trophies, or pretty much anyone or anything except themselves for their child's problems. The common thread is a profound lack of self-awareness.

On the anti-vaccination issue, there's also a hefty dose of misinformation from people who are making money from selling the idea to gullible people, but there's definitely a certain psychological profile who falls for it most often.

protist ,

It's not just a data-stealing company, they also exploit tariff exemptions on shipments from China by shipping single orders that stay below the sales amount threshold rather than large shipments of products imported for resale. Using this sales technique they can undercut their competion, while also being even worse ecologically. They've also dumped a ton of money into marketing

As someone who is aging. Late thirties. How can I keep my finger on the pulse of current trends, particularly in music?

As an example. I grew up in hip-hop but at a certain point I stopped listening to new people and realised recently that I’d slept on some bangers. Like Kendrick particularly, but even people like Juice WRLD and Xxxtentacion....

protist ,

"You will be irrelevant" to who? People whose identities are so wrapped up in popular culture they can't conceive of someone liking something from 30, 50, 80 years ago? Lmao

protist ,

And Facebook succumbed to the olds many years ago. I remember in the mid then late 00s when it expanded from just college students to include high school students, and then suddenly my Aunt Joyce was on it too. Seriously, we're talking 15 years ago now

Many of the "founding fathers"/early US leaders were deists. They were super skeptical of organized religion in any form, and most dismissed out of hand the superstition and social control associated with religion. The US revolution happened at the height of the Enlightenment.

Went ahead and sliced it open. This is not a puffball, based on what I'm reading it's probably an earthball. Might be Scleroderma polyrhizum "dead man's hand" or Scleroderma michiganense "potato earthball." Either way, not going to eat this one!

"My ADHD is worse than yours, you no diagnosis-having wannabe!"

protist ,

Not what I took away at all, they're basically saying "your minor problems may be traits of ADHD, but you don't meet the criteria for a full diagnosis." They're specifically criticizing people who say they're "a little ADHD," effectively being the gatekeeper rather than advocating against gatekeeping

The House can pass whatever it wants, the Senate won't even consider it. How long did Republicans in the House stall that military aid bill to Israel because they didn't want Ukraine getting military aid? Doesn't seem like this was very urgent for them even a month ago.

“This directive is a clear violation of free speech,” Giuliani said in his thread. “WABC’s decision comes at a very suspicious time, just months before the 2024 election, and just as John (@JCats2013) and WABC continue to be pressured by Dominion Voting Systems and the Biden regime’s lawyers.”

Bold of Giuliani to continue defaming Dominion. The man is facing destitution and is running out of options. Doubling down on these lies to try to extract financial support from people who believe them is about all he's got left.

There isn't any of the Pacific missing in this projection...you can see right where it starts at the Bering Strait and ends in the exact same place. If this map were centered on the Pacific it would probably seem larger, but there's none missing.

Where's my Ashe juniper? Or how about a goddamn loblolly pine?!

Marco Rubio looks like shit. What happened to that dude

I'm having a hard time believing that's not a troll, and the reaction you're having here, calling someone a "clown feminist," is exactly what they were trying to provoke

The Biden administration has instituted several small-scale pilot programs to spur job growth in distressed places, such as the Build Back Better Regional Challenge, the Tech Hubs program, the Regional Innovation Engines program, the Recompete Pilot Program, and the Reconnecting Communities Pilot program. Some larger Biden administration programs with more general purposes may have also helped distressed places. These include legislation to provide state and local fiscal aid (the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund), infrastructure investment (the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act), and “industrial policy” programs to promote investments in semiconductors and clean energy (the CHIPS and Science Act and Inflation Reduction Act).

What also remains unsaid it "Texas" is not a monolith. In this data, houses in Houston, Dallas, and Austin are lumped in with Lamesa, Beaumont, and Nacogdoches, and I'm going to bet the ratios are wildly different in those places

protist ,

How do you keep him on a good path? You can't. The only person you can control is yourself.

How do you be there for him? First, accept that he may never change and may continue to spiral down. If you've accepted that and think you're in a good enough place to tolerate being around him, then do just that, be around him sometimes. It's paramount you have good boundaries though. He may try to use you for money, shelter, or any number of things you will have to say no to, and you need to feel alright with saying no.

protist ,

Yeah imma need to see the words in the speech surrounding that sentence before I can draw any conclusions. That could be taken wildly out of context for all we're presented with here.

Even in a worst case scenario, why now and not last year?

protist ,

They've been in the news quite a few times, the quoted portion mentioned being the most infamous event so far.

Source for the context that's missing here?

And governments like the UK generally don't do things that could be very easily defeated in a civil court.

I don't agree with that at all. The Tories have been running roughshod over precedent left and right and spinning up all sorts of legal battles

Lemmy's extreme-left news posts are often as bad at telling the truth as Reddit's extreme-right ones.

I don't get how you're relating this to this news story

Meet my 5 year old Tabasco - I already killed her 2 times - just gave her a new chance at live ( lemmy.world )

Grew her 2019 from seed. She flowered a little late so I took her to my office, where I have a perfect nice south facing office. She produced a ton of peppers. Then I "killed" her (cut her of way down, leaving her no leaves at all) and left her. 2 weeks later she came back....

protist ,

You've discovered that peppers are actually perennials, we just treat them like annuals in the US because they die in cold weather. We have wild chiltepin aka birds eye peppers (50K scoville) growing in our yard in Texas and they're particularly frost tolerant, moreso than domesticated varieties, but similarly they die back every year and I chop them low to the ground. They grow back bigger the next year and put off hundreds of peppers every summer. Take care of it and that tabasco will do great!!

The Gates Foundation has been working in education for over two decades, and still is

To be fair, that article's only about one of their education initiatives, and they've had many

When you said "strike against neoliberalism," what you meant to say was "strike against the neoliberal educational reform passed in 2013."

Are you sure this isn't just because it's in St. Louis?

The block on which the long-vacant St. Louis property sits was declared a decaying area by the St. Louis Planning Commission in 2023, the commercial real estate information news outlet mentioned.

Yeah this one's been completely vacant since 2017. This building's got lots of problems and has nothing to do with RTO policies

Unless she took some pills or sliced open her wrists on the way down, the coroner is only going say she died from a fall and plays no role in determining motivation. The daily beast sucks.

Certainly, if I were to eat a cicada, I would choose to eat them when they’re in what we call the teneral state or when they’ve just molted, and they’re still soft," Benson said. "They don’t have the wings fully developed, and I wouldn’t eat a cicada raw; I would cook it.”

    protist ,

"Most certainly" according to what source? Every source I see says there's zero historical evidence he ever existed, and many stories attributed to him have been traced to other actual historical figures.

Responding to your other comment here, I think you're just completely missing the point. Again, I'm not saying no one should appreciate Picasso's art. I'm saying that way back in the before-times, when we were talking about an art installation that challenges gender discrimination, you said Picasso would "heavily protest the discrimination," but based on all available evidence, that's what the French call "horseshit."

And Karen is already in the dictionary. I know some Karens who are lovely people and who could care less about its common usage.

I recommend you read the interview I linked above, she goes into great detail about this and frankly it's amazing
