Copse of early fall color trees, New Britain Reservoir, Wolcott, Connecticut. Maples, among others, are early autumn colors standouts.

Standing on the rocky shore of a lake beneath a deep blue October sky. Across a narrow channel, a small island rises a few feet above the lake in its center. Here stands a small grove of mature trees. Many of these are far ahead of most of the forest surrounding the lake in tuning bright fall colors: reds, oranges, golds, yellows and bright greens.

    A deep twilight is descending upon the forest, a silhouetted strip at the very bottom of the picture with a few trees rising slightly higher on the right. The vast majority of the pic is the sky: dark royal blue high above and vivid dark orange along the horizon. Dark gray clouds with a slight tinge of violet are streaming diagonally across the sky from lower left to upper right. They are rather tightly packed along the horizon, but farther apart and slowly dissolving higher up.

    Hiked two trails for the first time this morning on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge. First was Hamilton Mountain. Upper Rodney Falls looked awesome predawn. The trail was very well maintained with lots of bridges and stairs. Made it a loop and came
    back on the Hardy Creek trail.

    One more shot from in near in . I often struggle with foregrounds. That's why I tried to practice it more often.
    This was one of our first hikes there and it was just great. I was indeed a bit sad that everything just started to grow and bloom. But it was the best that could happen! The colors & the mood there were a true and unique . Enjoy!

    Autumn dreams for a long hot summer, New Britain Reservoir, Wolcott, Connecticut. October 12, 2019, 4:13 PM.

    A deep blue October sky with swirls of streaky white clouds, mirrored on the lake below. Standing on a soggy shoreline of leafy green ground cover. Across about 300 feet of water is a small island with a rocky shoreline and a grove of trees on its elevated center. Many of its trees are maples and birch that have already achieved peak autumn colors ahead of most of the rest of the forest encircling the lake. The grove is a splash of yellows, golds, oranges and reds. There are several more splashes of early color on the far shore to our left.

    For those who don't already know: OpenStreetMap.org is an alternative to Google maps.

    It's not a great alternative! For instance, minor spelling changes can stymie its capability to find an address. Like, I was looking for an address where the street name had the word "Brook" in it. But OpenStreetMap had it as "Brk", and I couldn't get results using "Brook". I had to zoom into the area in question to realize that they just had a different spelling.

    It's probably not super accessible either, I don't know.

    But, it's open source and you can sign up to contribute or correct. And if you're into hiking it's going to be a treasure trove for you!

    Oranges and blues of October, New Britain Reservoir, Southington, Connecticut. October 12, 2019, 4:47 PM. Throw in some bright greens as well.

    A very rocky stretch of lakeshore beneath a deep blue October sky with a few small streaks of cloud. The leafy green shrubs growing among the large, rough gray rock outcrops are a bright yellow green. A forest that runs up to the edge of the rocks is sporting vibrant orange, gold and bright green autumn foliage. The late day sun is low in the sky offscreen right, mixing bright sunshine with long dark shadows across the scene.

    Walked from Weil der Stadt to Ehningen today. Wanted to walk further, but was still too tired from yesterday and half the route was on asphalt. And also the distance to the next town was greater than my planned route had shown.

    A very small impression of the first 30 km along the HW5 from Pforzheim to Weil der Stadt. After I left the forested area, I was already too tired and it was too warm to concentrate on taking any photos so I mostly just stumbled along. I hope it’s better tomorrow because the area is very beautiful.

    Spent time this week out escaping the heat and enjoying our beautiful national forests while we still have them. San Gregorio Lake at 9400 ft. elevation. Accessible by foot only.

    Forest as far as the eye can see filled with mostly VERY tall ponderosa pine trees.

    Monday hike — got a view of the Rockies, which still have some snow. 🥾🌾🌞

    The hiking trail crosses the road several times, so here is a view while crossing the road. On the right is a large yellow, diamond-shaped road sign with a symbolized human warning drivers of pedestrians ahead. Behind the sign, the road stretches down the mountain with a white-striped trail crossing in the distance. There are pine trees on either side of the road, a peek of hills way in the distance, and mostly blue skies overhead.
