Explored the lower 14-mile section of the Deschutes River Trail. My first time hiking in a desert river canyon. I could have used more elevation gain but it was fun. I’ve become obsessed with canoe camping videos over the last couple months so I enjoyed being close to the river. Nothing more than a little light rain and I was dry by the end of the hike.
Ranger Sarah stands in front of a Utah Juniper (Juniperous Osteosperma). The Utah Juniper grows slowly, reaching a height of 20 feet and can live for 650 years. It has blue marble sized berries which are actually cones. These berries are an important food source for a variety of wildlife. Native American would make a medicine by boiling the twigs and berries. They also used the bark to make rope, clothing, diapers, and used it for tender.
My name is Thomas, but some folks call me Gull. I'm in my early thirties, and I live in #Canada , in the #Vancouver area. I'm a major #introvert , and I prefer to keep my life simple, with #minimalism and #anticonsumerism in mind.
I post nice photos or random thoughts. I boost important, interesting, or funny things.
Saw our first hooded merganser of the season on the bay this morning, plus our furry beaver friends and subdued but pleasant sunrise colors. Thrilled about the hoodie, one of my favs. #GetOutside#Hiking#Birding
New instance, new #introduction. I started on mastodon, but moved over to calckey for the extra features. Not wanting to be on one of the giant instances, I went for smaller, but had the bad luck of picking ones that shit down. So a few migrations later, I'm relocating here now.
At any rate, I'm just a guy in the #PNW that likes going on adventures and #travel, #hiking, and #backpacking. I'm also into #Board Games and #ttrpg, specifically #Pathfinder2e / #pf2e. While I've used #linux off and on for the last couple of decades, I recently switched to #PopOS and made that my daily driver. Online, I try to keep up on #privacy and local/national #politics without being overwhelmed or depressed... which is not easy to do.
I've got a black #cat named Nef, and sometimes find time for #baking and #knitting, though not as much anymore.
