Ramadan begins for many Muslims Sunday night. But as they savor the traditions of their own diverse communities — from holiday treats to evening diversions — the tribulations faced by fellow Muslims are never far from anyone’s mind. #Muslims in #Canada walking away from Trudeau. Muslim- Americans and Arab-Americans walking away from the #Biden. What to do when all bow down to #Israel?
What about a North American alliance (should include #Mexico) to run candidates & policies aimed at justice for #Palestine and in the MENA?
Today I arrived in #Granada centro just in time for the Big City Parade for "La #Toma" (the Taking). It's essentially a yearly celebration of a Roman #Catholic / #Imperialist ethnic cleansing campaign directed at #Muslims and #Jews.
In some ways I feel very comfortable and at home in #Spain, but as a new #Muslim, there are important ways the shoe does not fit. The omnipresence of #Pork and #Ham, the dog poop all over the sidewalks that makes any wear of street shoes in prayer areas highly sus, the unavailability of prayer spaces on public transit, and so on.
I will note that both #Mosques I frequent here are permitted to make #Adan (calls to prayer) that are audible from the street. That's unusual in the Western world. Certainly better than #France, for example.
Anyway: a UK-based friend and I were sharing thoughts on #Hijra (migration to a Muslim majority country) just this morning. And at that point, I wasn't even thinking about the Toma and what it represents.
In #Revert news, I'm finally learning to figure out dhuhr and asr times from #Sun and shadows, like a grownup #Maliki.
Dhuhr and asr are the periods in which #Muslims make the midday and afternoon prayers. There's some flexibility, but making the prayers earlier in the alloted time periods is recommended.
Here in #Granada we have a more precise calculation available (an actual Muslim mathematician publishes it). But it's best to look at the sun's transit each day yourself, or to rely on the folks at the local #Masjid.
Explanatory video here. Without visuals or being outside with a shaykh, I find text-only explanations impossible to follow. So this video is super helpful.
Banners were also seen saying “Yesterday #Srebrenica, today Gaza,” which refers to the genocide of 8,000 Bosnian #Muslims 28 years ago in the eastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica.
Bias incidents against Muslims, Jews on the rise in the U.S. amid Middle East war, new data shows.
""Both Islamophobia and anti-Arab racism are out of control in ways we have not seen in almost 10 years," said Corey Saylor of CAIR, the nation's largest Muslim civil rights organization.
#CAIRO — After a long journey from #Gaza, more than 100 American citizens and their families have entered #Egypt through the #RafahCrossing. Jonathan Webster, the #USEmbassy in Cairo's consul general, said some of those families are telling him they ran out of food and water during their journeys. #Israel
The religious edict by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) said #Muslims in the country must support the #Palestinians’ struggle against “Israeli aggression”, while also declaring that support for #Israel or its supporters is “#haram”, or against #IslamicLaw. #Fatwas have no legal force and are aimed at encouraging the devout against taking a certain course of action. #Indonesia
American Jews continue to demonstrate moral leadership when it's needed the most. Very proud of my Jewish friends and family.
If this cycle changes in our lifetime it'll be because this generation of #Jews and #Muslims inspire each other and the rest of us with the courage to imagine a future dominated by hope and grace rather than #terror and violence.
‘Urdu Is Written Back To Front’: The ‘Microaggressions’ Indian Muslims Face All The Time
A recent paper revealed many microaggressions—put-downs, insults and jibes—that Indian Muslims face in their daily lives. Even humour is deployed. We spoke with the author, Prerna Bakshi, a lecturer at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, about what a conversation between Hindu and Meo Muslim education officials in Mewat, Haryana, revealed about the 'covert and subtle' ways in which discrimination manifests.
Massoud Hayoun’s “When We Were Arabs” (2019) is described as “A vivid account of Massoud Hayoun's grandparents' lives in #Egypt, #Tunisia, France, #Palestine, and Los Angeles, in which he reclaims his family's Jewish Arab identity".
Two decades after 9/11, #Muslims once again feel like second-class citizens in the West. When they look at the plight of civilians in #Palestine, they cannot help but feel that a Palestinian life is not equal to an #Israeli life. President #Biden’s words of sympathy ring hollow when his actions do not match his words. He cannot genuinely empathize with those killed or wounded at the Al-Ahly hospital
What Arundhati Roy and the secular intelligentsia get wrong about Modi’s India
It is not that violence against minorities is not a serious issue, but that outrage while doing nothing has invisibilised the restructuring of the country, writes Amrita Shah.
"I see and remember the face of Faizan’s mother. I see and remember the horror and the plea for mercy in the eyes of Qutbuddin Ansari from 2002; the tears in the eyes of the lady in Karnataka, who was forced to take off her burqa to enter the school where she had been teaching for years; the faces of the Muslims who have spent their entire youth in prison because of wrongful incarceration; and the pain in the eyes of fellow Muslims, every time I see them raise their hands in supplication." Salik Ahmad writes. (Article from March 2022)
Haryana violence updates: Muslims asked to vacate homes, their shops and shanties set ablaze
Organisers of the Vishva Hindu Parishad rally during which the violence started gave incomplete information about the event, said Deputy CM Dushyant Chautala.
