@EllieK that profile is not the federated one from threads, it is one bridged by bird.makeup from twitter/X. bird.makeup can bring the posts from any account on twitter to the fediverse but tends to have a high delay. It also only works for the time being and twitter has been gradually making its existence harder and harder.
From what I've read your instance mstdn.ca does not block threads.net but it may be that there is a technical issue between them... I think it was also suggested that threads blocks mstdn.ca.
This is a list of over 500 accounts with the most followers from a total of around 2300 that I managed to find and seem to have enabled #fediverse sharing on #threads so far. There's probably more but these are the ones the Mastodon instance I queried knew about.
Is this a high or a low number? At least it's more than the 200-300 @BeAware was understandably disappointed with seeing a day or two ago. For me it seems like a decent start but I'd definitely like to see it keep growing.
@pre the bigger issue with this is that while they are making it seem like BS now fully federates, the PDS is just one piece of the puzzle and the network remains very much centralized until other parts of it are possible to run by anyone.
Have been digging thru and following some great new accounts from @Flipboard lately. Mostly by searching for all profiles with "Flipboard.com" and then following the new accounts now live. Try it!
LMK which cool ones you discover. Will add those to an upcoming #followfriday ...
like @NewsLitProject and @fact-check-ElectionCentral for letting me keep track of the mis/disinformation out there.
Both NewsLitProject and ElectionCentral also have a number of magazines if you need a different focus. I assume the way this works is that the main account has all the posts and the magazine accounts only a subset.
Bluesky has 3 million accounts, invites going away soon
Some news from Bluesky: yesterday the network reached the milestone of 3 million accounts. This milestone comes 2 months after hitting the 2 million mark. While there are no official numbers for Monthly Active Users (MAU), Kuba Suder estimates around 500k MAU, based on the daily and weekly active users. For comparision, Mastodon has between 1 million and 1.5 million MAU, depending on the source.
Bluesky’s growth is far from over, as Bluesky said that that ‘Invite codes are going away soon’. This is different from opening up the network for federation, which is also planned for early 2024.
Bluesky is explicitly positioning itself as a place that is welcoming and suitable for news organisations. Bluesky team member Emily published an explainer how newsrooms can use Bluesky for the upcoming election season. Not everyone is convinced the network is ready yet though, as ændra explains some features that the network needs to be fit for purpose.
Yep, still on that track... Will be interesting to see what dropping the invite requirement means for them but the daily active user numbers have been declining somewhat in recent months.
way back the issue most certainly was that though. There was a time when trying to run games with wine was a frustrating exercise that only resulted in a success in small minority of cases... which meant the answer was almost certainly negative when accounting for the additional restriction of trying to run the games you actually wished to be playing. Not everyone may remember this of course.
The world of social media is changing, and we are embracing this new social web, the Fediverse. Today, we started to federate our platform with a test of 25 partners. You can read more about that on @mike's post here:
Each of the twitter alternatives may simply fail to be compelling enough and reach "critical mass" ... leaving Twitter as the last standing.
Some factors:
competition and fracturing
experimentation with federation etc
I think it'd come down to the idea that Twitter simply meets people's expectations, it's a "known" entity ...
while the rest suffer from expectations, hype, misunderstandings, and disappointment.
@maegul maybe but twitter keeps changing for the worse and digging itself into a deeper hole as time passes. I think most migrations will always look like this and the number one issue is that some of the people are always slow to move so the new platforms fall short of replacing the original, then some people go back, there is fragmentation so it is a long-term issue.
The #IndieWeb service #Bridgy is ready to handle bridge AT protocol and ActivityPub protocol posts and replies once federation is enabled in production (already working in sandbox test server).
The format will be:
To follow a #Fediverse account from BlueSky / AT protocol: <username>.<server_domain>.ap.brid.gy
To follow a BlueSky / AT protocol user: <username>@atproto.brid.gy
Example: @atp.youronly.one@atproto.brid.gy
This allows users from each side to see new posts and to reply to these threads.
What is more interesting is that, if you have IndieWeb support on your website or blog, you will see comments from BlueSky / AT protocol appear as a comment, thanks to #Webmention. It is already possible to do this with Fediverse / ActivityPub. ^_~
@youronlyone what about the other way around, how could a Bluesky user follow someone on the fediverse if federation is enabled and this starts working in production one day?
Recommended follow list for Ukraine war on Mastodon
Here are my recommendations for coverage of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Only accounts active recently and you can easily import them from a file. They are split into two different lists by type.
Ukraine: OSINT & war updates
This list mostly has accounts posting quickly about daily events of the war and doing open source intelligence.
The import file relies on the List import feature recently added to Mastodon. I have noticed the list import results in a few accounts sometimes ending up in their separate list by the same name so you may have to fix that manually afterwards if this happens on your instance. If many people are on an older Mastodon version and want it I can also post a follows file that will work for those.
Import instructions:
Sign into your instance on the web
go to settings (Gear icon)
Choose Import and Export -> Import
For import type choose "Lists" (could also be "Translation missing: en.imports.types.lists" if there is an issue with the localization).
Select "merge" to only add to your current follows/lists so nothing you have gets deleted
