A Useful heuristic for refuting conspiracy is the scope of logistics.

It's one thing for a single organization to lie about its internal affairs with none of its personnel blowing the whistle, but as a conspiracy grows it takes more organizations and individual personnel keeping mum to keep the secret from being widely known.

Flat earth would take the US government and all universities working in lock step. The globalist agenda takes pretty much every world government and all academia.

In contrast, MK Ultra was essentially done with only members of the CIA in the know, and it was still known about by many before it was declassified.

No TV while being surrounded by the arts gets you cooking.

JayDee ,

I imagine it's a "negative liberty vs positive liberty" conundrum.

American libertarianism seems to consistently skew towards negative liberty, which is complete autonomy to anything but without any power or resources. I believe this predilection came from Ayn Rand and Reaganism, and that It now manifests mostly as anarchocapitalist sentiments.

I'm a bigger fan of positive liberty - possessing the resources and power to do what you desire within a constrained system.

Unfortunately we live in a society which provides neither. The amazing results of constant compromise.

JayDee ,

Yep, you get it pretty clearly that the creator was an edgy centrist.

JayDee ,

Blazing saddles isn't really centrist, more just anti-rightwing from my memory of it.

Let's talk about the chapters shown in the snopes article above.

Chapter 3 is making fun of (an) American Student(s). This was 1969, in the middle of the Vietnam war. He's saying they were idiots and that they shouldn't have been protesting the Vietnam war.

Chapter six - The Yippies. The action they are doing is the fighting against two things. The first would be gentrification which is always an issue driving the poor into homelessness. The other was the bulldozing of entire neighborhoods to make way for the highways from 1957 to 1977, an act which displaced 1 million people.

Chapter seven - the Black Militants. This would include Malcolm X and the Black Panthers along with the Philadelphia organization MOVE. Hell, this was a year after MLK Jr was assassinated, and the white general public probably still saw him as an agitator. These were a movement in opposition to very overtly racist cops supported by a largely pro-apartheid populace. And the Author completely misrepresents every view they had from a brief skim over.

We could talk about the looters but I don't think we're ready for that convo.

JayDee ,

You cared enough to challenge 'centrist' as a bad thing, so I explained why I viewed it as bad.

Comedy is always used as a political tool, and that was the case then too. Being critical of all media, including comedy (even when satirical). We have the

MAD was highly influential back then and no doubt formed in part the current centrist white liberals who are now opposing anything outside the status quo given its large teen audience back then.

So long as that drug use is paired by actually good rehabilitation infrastructure (like Portugal's drug abuse treatment before its unraveling)

JayDee ,

I wanna be rolled over by a tank after reading this.

JayDee ,

In the US? Dudes love glocks here, so fewer guns have anything but a trigger/grip safety.

JayDee ,

I'll continue to live dangerously via Q-tips. Been doing it since I was a child, and no doctor's told me I've irreparably damaged my ears yet.

JayDee ,

Looks like I can avoid plastic by printing some templates and using a band saw. Probably will have to do some redesigning to make it work on my bike since I have shocks up front and a rack in the back.

JayDee ,

If this is the name of the game, it's dumb. It's not like they lined the Devs up along a wall. They'll still be able to serve other companies with their talent since Microsoft just cut their leads.

JayDee ,

Approval voting, STAR voting, Ranked-choice voting- I don't care, just get me out of this first-past-the-pole nightmare!

JayDee ,

I think that the web had great potential to help, but I think that it has had that potential heavily damaged by the profit-oriented web 2.0. The vapid ad-and-clickbait-saturated web we've created is exponentially less knowledge-dense than it was before. We really do need to go back to a web that's built by communities of people rather than profit-crazed tech giants.

I also feel like the bloating of CSS and HTML code, video-sizes, and uses of servers has been a bad idea. It feels like we've done these things for consumerist reasons rather than for genuine benefit.

JayDee ,

Yes, the codecs currently used are a good thing, and yes, I think 4k and 8k should just be left to downloading. I think videogame streaming should have shifted over to demo file formats years ago, so that your gameplay wouldn't be sullied by video compression (very big issue for games like squad and tarkov, where everywhere is covered in woods.

JayDee ,

If you haven't already, folks, switch your default search engine over to a searx. You'll gain back the ability to actually find useful results. It's not so good for shopping, though.

No offense to you, but I definitely don't think this will address quite a few things that therapy can.

If all you are suffering from is a lack of direction in life, then this absolutely will help. You could even see improvements in social anxiety and social aptitude.

Anger problems, though? Alexithymia? Chronic episodes of mental dissociation? I don't think working on the train crew's gonna help

At the same time, It's definitely been conjected that therapy is mostly woman-focused and isn't as effective for men for various reasons. That kind of lines up with a few of my previous therapists, who felt like worthless experiences for me. I have heard of some new therapy styles implemented in certain places, though, that do sound to be genuinely helpful to dudes.

Edit: "social anxiety and social anxiety" woops

JayDee ,

I think most men have not learned to find inner peace and still suffer from closeted issues. The rate of suicide amongst men is still so high. There's definitely a bias we dudes who find hobby communities, where we assume that most dudes have found these spaces. I'd argue most dudes in the US are still suffering from isolation.

I don't think the fact that many therapists are 'woman-focused' is a reason to avoid therapy. You can still find a therapist that really helps. It may just take several tries. As I also mentioned, there are efforts to create methods that are more effective for men, and you can seek out those groups as well.

There is also still a strong stigma against seeking therapy, and I definitely see that argument about therapy being 'woman-focused' being thrown out as an excuse not to try therapy at all.

JayDee ,

I thought this meme was showing someone using an app to fuck with the president's state-issued implant/pacemaker. Not the implant I was thinking.

JayDee ,

That logic they're using should be burned with fire.

With that logic, cars being highjacked for a crime should make the company liable for the crime (Revolutionary actions would also count as crimes). That gives car manufacturers alot more legal reason for adding kill switches to their vehicles' engines, which would most likely be used by cops for whatever the fuck they want.

How about DJI's drones being used to kill individuals in Ukraine? Steam decks are currently also being used by Ukraine to control machine gun turrets remotely, and they're able to be used that way explicitly because they use regular OS's (a major boon to its users.)

This type of regulation would only further lead to anti-consumer products, and a stronger police state.

Obscure screw added so appliance cannot be disassembled ( lemmy.world )

Basic blender went bad (motor ran but spindle wasn't rotating). I wanted to disassemble to see if it could be repaired. Three of the four screws were Phillips head. I had to cut the casing open in order to discover why I couldn't unscrew the fourth. It was a slotted spanner.

JayDee , (edited )

That's a flathead with a bead welded in the middle. Source a local dremel, some earplugs and eye pro, and do some quick converting.

Oh wait I think I understand the image. You had to saw the plastic apart to expose the screw. Yeah fuck those dudes. I guess another option would've been to get a cheap screw driver and modify it with a dremel? Either way, fuck Kenmore.

A quarter is one half of one half. Makes perfect sense.

I don't think it's the phrasing. You would need an entirely different question to not elicit the response we saw. It wasn't that the question that was asked that angered people, it was that women consistently chose the bear. this question would have been a nothing burger otherwise. At the same time, though, the question was pitched because the author already knew what the answer would be. They understood how frequently unknown men pose a threat to women.

What this response from many men the shows is that most dudes are still not ready to talk about just how much more dangerous the world is for women at a baseline measurement - quite explicitly because of predatory dudes.

JayDee ,

I read his comment, and I disagree that it was explicitly ragebait. It was making a point attempting to bring women's safety to the forefront of discussion (it succeeded but enflamed too much to be useful).

JayDee ,

I'm the opposite. Any time I hear the 'Caroline' I get aliitle frustrated.

'Home Alabama' forever and always.

JayDee ,

If you have a solidarity network in your city, join it and help them however you are able.

If you don't have a solidarity network where you are, consider attempting to form one.

The reason this kind of thing can happen unchallenged is because landlords know they can drag legal battles out in court with no other repercussions for a long time. Don't let them think that. Get involved, get organized.

Brain was turned off - I thought this was showing how copper from different countries had slightly different colors.

Bruh drafting up the evac plans is gonna be a nightmare. And you best memorize your floor's plan or you're gonna be running a maze for your life.

It's gonna turn out this whole fucking thing's just a bunch of open floor plans with my luck.

JayDee ,

Listened to the 'If Books Could Kill' episode on 'Going Infinite' by Michael Lewis. Despite Lewis being a blind fan of Sam Bankman-Fried, he makes him sound like an absolute sociopath. I think that sure Sam might've been the fall guy and some other dudes should be in jail too, but I also think that he absolutely has some serious mental problems and probably shouldn't be allowed to run a business ever again.

JayDee ,

The shackles of sexism, racism, and homophobia do not simply fall off when you accept class consciousness. These are still fights for awareness which must continue to be fought. Otherwise, we risk allowing toxic mentalities into our midst, which will only serve to alienate and expel our minority brethren.

The cages built by the state which cordon us off from one another exist in the mind, but they are very real in impact. We must fight by destroying the cages in each of our thoughts, and pass our knowledge to others so they can do the same. That is the only means to stand as one.

Let's also not forget that there are very real shackles placed on many groups - many real cages - which we must work to destroy as well.

JayDee ,

What a pretty old senior pup! look at those eyes, they're like caramel drops.

JayDee OP ,

That's correct. I'm interested in seeing hardware implementations of it.

JayDee ,

There's definitely self-selection happening. A paranoid individual is more likely to feel the need to buy a gun. A person who wants control over others is more likely to feel that same need. A person with malicious or suicidal intent is more likely to feel that same need.

Meanwhile, it's entirely a coin-toss on whether a sane, responsible individual actually feels like they can/should own a firearm. I think as we get into worse civil unrest, we will inevitably see more individuals feel that they have no choice but to arm themselves, but for the time being it's going to the less savory folks rushing to buy.

JayDee ,

These are the same excuses given for the enshittification of American bathroom stalls.

Fuck the companies - give the humans the privacy they like. Many locker rooms I've been in already have stalls, too - the shower stalls.

JayDee ,

The answer seems to be "it depends" and "if you have the right equipment and know-how"

JayDee ,

I personally lean towards "we've done all this work and it's incredibly scary that modern observations actually tell us all the work we've put in is actually wrong and we have to create brand new formulas again."

Where's my crew-served armaments? When do I get to own a cruiser?
