The mobile web is so bad these days, and it's as if every single page is like this now. It almost feels like the advertisers are just memeing on us now. They could sneak an "& Knuckles" on the page somewhere and I probably wouldn't notice.

Roku is really just trying to sabotage their reputation at this point, it seems.

After DEI Cuts, This Sixth-Gen Austinite Is Losing Access to UT ( www.austinchronicle.com )

Nyeka Arnold is a sixth generation Austinite. Before they came to Austin, her family was enslaved just a few miles east of the city, in the cotton farming town of Webberville. It was her great-great-great grandfather, Rev. John Henry Winn, who founded St. John Freedom Colony in Austin in the early 1870s....

I literally just asked a question.

You didn't just ask a question, you also injected your own narrative about "other more-qualified students" being denied positions, which is a gross misrepresentation of what DEI is. You don't get to say you're "just asking questions" when your questions come with baked-in narratives, Tucker.

the overwhelming emotional arguments and lack of any actual facts

"overwhelming emotional arguments"? One guy called you a racist, and wasn't even arguing with you. If that was overwhelmingly emotional for you, maybe you're not really ready to have your question answered.

Chozo ,
Chozo avatar

Also still no one has even attempted to answer the question. Why is that?

Because we recognize a bad-faith argument for what it is and don't want to humor it.

Alternatively, if you are not asking in bad faith and are actually just doing a horrifically poor job of posing your question neutrally, then you seem to lack a critical understanding of the subject at hand that needs to be dealt with before your question could even be addressed. Nobody is obligated to lay down that foundation for you, especially on a subject that has been discussed to death already.

The problem comes from not knowing what the optimal algorithm is for the particular situation beforehand, though. You can only formulate based on factors you already know. That's why AI can train itself and develop its own, new algorithms, and can determine those unknown factors that may have gone unnoticed by humans.

I wonder if maybe it's supposed to be partially your blood in some scenarios, then.

Feels a bit weird pinging the president in Lemmy comments, but come at me, Secret Service.

How do you feel about the galactic war?

I really, really want to like that side of the game. I love the idea of players pooling together their tiny, individual actions towards a greater shared goal and what it can bring in terms of RP and immersion. Having new content gated behind community participation is an awesome idea, and I totally get the idea of simulating a...

Yeah, that part I feel is a very intentional design choice by the devs. Going through the worst hell of your life, barely making it out alive, clawing your way to survival, only to find out that you contributed one thousandth of one percent toward the overall effort. It's meant to be bleak.

Night lights that detect light levels are probably flickering so fast that it just appears to be on

Ok so I got this idea not while showering, but because I'm very high. The story does come from my bathroom though! I have a night light in my bathroom, and I was looking at the night light as I turned off the bathroom light. I'm a big nerd so I remembered that the things that detect light levels are actually diodes wired in...

Chozo ,
Chozo avatar

Modern night lights won't have this happen, as they have a built-in "buffer" to prevent rapid on/off cycles like that.

But I do remember having an old night light when I was younger, probably from the late 80s, that you could make flicker by putting your hand in front of the bulb so that the light reflects back onto the sensor, effectively turning it into a very fast Useless Machine.

It wouldn't work; Tekken doesn't support throwable items, which are an essential part of any legitimate Waffle House fight.

Chozo ,

what's the point of a dedicated piece of hardware that's generally inferior?

Focus/concentration, kinda like how George R R Martin writes on an old DOS computer to eliminate distractions while writing (bad example for expediting work, I know). Still requires you to do a lot of the heavy lifting, which instills knowledge for the future.

There's also an element of trust; schools generally trust Texas Instruments that their products do math correctly (you'd be surprised how many calculators don't), the same cannot be said for MegaPower Graphing Calculator Pro (Ad-Free Premium) off of the Play Store.

I'd say if you have your own domain, that's probably the most preferred route to go. But otherwise, Gmail is probably the best, appearance-wise, of the free mainstream options out there.

It used to be free 1GB of mailbox storage that kept expanding for free. Now there is a hard limit unless you pay.

I don't think anybody expected that to last forever. That said, the free limit is still way more than enough for most people. I've got 20 years of emails in my account, and I'm just barely past my free limit.

Chozo ,

Are you larping as an Automaton or something?

Chozo ,

The point is that your cold, machine-like rhetoric is not only undemocratic, but also not really useful in this situation. OP posted a meme venting about parenthood, and your response comes off as "Too bad, so sad, I have no feeling for your feelings".

Chozo ,
Chozo avatar

Sickle, for sure. If you pace your fire properly, it's got the best ammo economy out of any primary (outside of the Blitzer, maybe). The armor pen leaves a lot to be desired, but aiming in first-person is accurate enough that you can shoot around armor or target small weak points from afar with relative ease in a lot of cases.

Unless it's a hot planet and I'm expecting a lot of engagements, in which case I'll go back to the Slugger. It feels like overkill for most enemies, but damn is it satisfying to use. I especially love the Slugger's sound design, it's got such a satisfying "kachunk"y feel to it.

Chozo ,

I saw some dude making pretty clutch work out of orbital smokes while in quickplay last night. Allowed us to quickly disengage from huge fights and made extraction tolerable against bots. Made me decide to equip smoke grenades for a few missions with him and now I'm kinda seeing the value of smoke in bot missions.

Chozo ,

Even worse when people try to reinforce you in a spot where you can't reach your weapon, can't get to cover, and too far to take out a heavy with your hellpod, so you land in the crossfire and immediately get domed by a rocket.

Seems like a way of bullying community leaders into running their instances how Fedi Garden feels is appropriate. Which is intrinsically against the nature of the Fediverse, in that instances are meant to have their own autonomy.

Fedi Garden's position in this space is to be a directory, not a dictator. This feels like an overstep.

Chozo ,
Chozo avatar

Sure, but Fedi Garden is seen as the de facto "primary" hub for this sort of information. There's a certain power dynamic at play in this sort of situation that is being weaponized.

It's like if LemmyWorld decided "We're exclusively a furry community now", after being the "main" Lemmy instance. Sure, they'd be within their right to do so, but it does a disservice to the Fediverse at large when things that can be seen as critical parts of the Fediverse's social infrastructure are suddenly slanted in any one particular way.

For those unaware, patrols spawn on a timer, and the amount of patrols that spawn on that timer is based on a few factors, one of which being the number of groups (or formations, as I've been referring to them) of Helldivers active on the map. These formations are defined by any groups of players that are within 75m of another player. You don't have to all be within the same 75m radius, but as long as there's fewer than 75m between any two players, they're considered one formation.

There's a LOT more detail in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zp8xuf_dLDw

I try to solo the artillery loading when I see it but I know I inevitably get a patrol coming towards me if I take too long, and I'll find enemies will pop in on my location if I'm traveling alone.

If you wanna solo the SEAF artillery, hunt down all the shells and bring them to the loading area BEFORE interacting with the terminal. Some people say that the terminal doesn't impact spawns, but I'm not sure I believe that based on my own personal observations. I feel like artillery terminals act similarly to geological survey terminals, in that they're a scripted enemy spawn event.

Initial thoughts on the Quasar and heavy machine gun?

What does everyone think of the new weapons? I'm liking the Quasar against bots in particular because it can take out dropships and heavy enemies, though I'm still getting used to the windup time. I haven't tried the heavy machine gun much, but so far it seems fine, if somewhat ammo-hungry.

Chozo ,
Chozo avatar

Quasar has a permanent slot in my strategem loadout now. At least, until it gets nerfed, which I have a very strong feeling that it will.

On the bug side it one-shots Hive Guards through their armor, one-shots Chargers to the face, and two-shots Bile Titans to the face. On the bot side it pretty much one-shots everything if you hit the weak point; I've yet to see anything survive a direct shot to the vents. It even takes out Bot Drops with a single shot to the engine; if you coordinate it with your team and they're paying attention, you can easily nullify an entire bot reinforcement before they even touch the ground.

It also puts in work against structures, too; easily takes out spore towers, turret towers, fabricators, illegal broadcasts, all from insanely safe distances. I haven't tested it against Shrieker nests or bot artillery, but I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't also put in work on these, as well. It works but it's not super useful against bug holes or eggs, but both of those are easily covered by your primary/grenades, anyway.

Chozo ,
Chozo avatar

The new quasar cannon is also pretty good at dealing with fabricators from a distance. I haven't tested it out on bug structures yet, but I imagine it's putting in work there, too.

Except that hasn't really happened anywhere else weed has been legalized, so not sure why you'd think that when there's demonstrable evidence to the contrary.

we discovered that the app gave itself root access to your phone (full administrative privileges), prevented you from fully removing it once it was installed

This is untrue. To the best of my knoweldge, the TikTok app doesn't even check for root access, let alone utilize it. Nor can it receive root access on a non-rooted device in the first place.

I don't like TikTok either, but there's many more things that we can criticize them over which are actually true.

Libraries and food banks have their inventory paid for, though. Neither one of them accepts stolen goods. What are you talking about?

    Chozo ,
    Chozo avatar

Depends on how you define stealing.

Pirates love to use a definition of "theft" that puts the entire definition on the victim, instead of their own actions. They use definitions like "depriving the original owner", instead of "taking what doesn't belong to them".

If you're crashing on PS5, reduce or disable the screen shake effect in your settings. Certain shockwaves that are close enough to you (I notice it mostly with hellpods landing next to me) will shake your screen so hard that the game crashes. At least, that's my theory; I've seen a LOT less crashing since turning down the screen shake.

    Chozo ,
    Chozo avatar

Disable or reduce the screen shake effect in your settings. This was a major source of crashing for me.

Not sure if that one was also addressed in this patch, but teammates causing huge screen shakes (usually by landing a Hellpod right next to me) would cause me to instantly crash, or sometimes be transferred immediately back into my ship by myself if I was lucky enough to not fully crash the game when it happened. I've had far fewer crashes, even with people landing Hellpods next to me, since lowering the shake effect.
