'Canada's national archives is working to identify, digitize and transfer six million pages of federal Indian day school records to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR), the department head says.'
Meta has begun blocking links to news publishers in Canada, and Google is looking to do the same. Canada's Online News Act requires technology companies to pay the country's news outlets for the use of their online articles. Countries around the world will be watching the standoff between America's Big Tech and Canada's government closely, to see if their domestic outlets could one day benefit from similar legislation.
Thousands of healthcare workers in British Columbia were victims of a cyberattack. Attackers managed to breach a server hosted & managed by the Health Employers Association of British Columbia (HEABC). The HEABC is an association that represents over 200 public health care sector employers & conducts most collective bargaining with healthcare workers in the province.
In its breach notification, HEABC it states that the attackers accessed a server hosting the sites and application forms for Health Match BC, the BC Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry, and the Locums for Rural BC programs. It further states that the impact of this breach varies depending by program & individual. It confirms that the server hosted 240,000 email addresses & other data.
They confirmed that the attackers accessed the server in question on July 13th & they moved to contain the situation. HEABC is currently investigating but warns that the attacker may have had access to "personal email addresses, birthdates, social insurance numbers, passport information, driver’s licences, educational credentials, investigative reports and other information relating to individual dealings with the relevant programs"
As the Metro strike enters its 4th day, the supermarket chain has agreed to donate perishable food to the Daily Bread Food Bank in Toronto.
The food bank said that it has an urgent need for food. It saw 270,000 client visits in June 2023, this is much higher than the 80,000 client visits seen in June 2019 before the pandemic.
Cellphone service is something many Canadians take for granted. But some Indigenous and remote communities, like Bloodvein First Nation in Manitoba, are forced to flee wildfires without this lifeline
Kicking off my (belated) viewing of #Canada vs #Australia - I have such divided feelings on this one.
I always want to see the host country succeed, it's such a benefit to the local soccer league & overall support + culture. And Australian fans deserve a chance to see Sam Kerr play.
OTOH I desperately want to see Christine Sinclair break that 6 goals in 6 world cups record.
The new EG.5.* variant (17%) has been eating into the dominance of XBB.1.5.* "Kraken" (23%). XBB.1.16.* "Arcturus" (20%) and XBB.1.9.* "Hyperion" (19%) are also significant.
The vigorous mix of variants implies increased immediate reinfection risks for those relying on immunity from a prior infection. Every variant is a minority of the recent samples.
The sample volumes seem representative up to July 13.
Does anyone who for example still needs to use an app like instagram as a tool have any advice about wanting to have encrypted conversations with people I’m talking to and how to aim for that? #encryption#instagram#canada#privacy#infosec
Every year Canada gives profitable oil companies (the same ones that gouge you and me at the pump) over 4.8 billion dollars in subsidies.
Think about what that 4.8 billion dollars could do if put to use for health care and education.
If you're a Canadian citizen, please consider signing this petition on the Parliament of Canada e-petition site demanding an end to fossil fuel subsidies:
Canada’s major telecom company wants to trademark #Pantone 301 as “Bell Blue”
As ridiculous as it seems, colours have just recently been allowed to be trademarked in #Canada, so the company is just embracing its rights — even if the public relations upside (and likely legal) is non-existent
So, it's okay to destroy #Indigenous heritage sites, pollute the planet, and appoint corporate lackeys to advisory boards -- but if you protest and cause disruption, you could face arrest?
"In May, after several #ExtinctionRebellion protests, the South Australia government introduced a A$50,000 maximum fine and three months jail for anyone 'recklessly' obstructing public spaces, while laws passed in New South Wales last year created a two-year maximum prison sentence for acts disrupting major roads or facilities.
"#England, #Wales and parts of #Canada and the #USA have also adopted similar laws aimed at blocking disruptive climate activism.
"In Western Australia, climate protesters say they have been 'disabled' by intimidating raids, strict bail conditions and orders which give authorities access to their devices and ban them from communicating with peers.
"According to Ms Grix, these tools were originally intended to deal with gangs and drug dealers.
"'To apply [that]... to climate defenders, who are protesting about environmental concerns, seems to be a massive overreach,' she says."

There is no precedent for what is happening now in Canada. The ongoing forest fires are obliterating all previous records. No matter which chart or graph you look at below, the message they send is shocking and alarming.
Canadian wildfires have burned more than 10 million hectares (24.7 million acres) this year, a record-breaking figure that has surpassed scientists' most pessimistic predictions, government data showed Saturday.
The prior all-time high occurred in 1989, when 7.3 million hectares were burned over the course of an entire year, according to national figures from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC).
The area burned this year, in just six and a half months, is roughly equivalent to the size of Portugal or Iceland.
