#KDE will mentor ten projects in Google Summer of Code (#GSoC) this year, including two projects for #LabPlot, a FREE, open source and cross-platform #DataVisualization and #DataAnalysis software.
LLM audio transcription is like a bulldozer tunneling a straight line into an otherwise inaccessible jungle; sure, stuff gets mangled, but it gives you quick access to biomes too costly to survey on foot.
Hey #journalists if you're going to use an open source project as an example of a hack, can you at least let them know in advance you're about to do something reckless so they can prepare?
Martin Owens is a developer on Inkscape, the free open source vector drawing software. He regularly publishes videos about Inkscape including tutorials, development updates, discussions etc. You can follow at:
Pipe Viewer - pv - is a terminal-based tool for monitoring the progress of data through a Unix pipeline. It can be inserted into any normal pipeline between two processes to give a visual indication of how quickly data is passing through, how long it has taken, how near to completion it is, and an estimate of how long it will be until completion.
This release adds a new SI units feature supplied by Kevin Ruddy, incorporates French translations supplied by Thomas Bertels, and fixes bugs with TMPDIR support and blocking output.
PV uses the resources of the @Codeberg platform for free software development.
If you were considering contributing to a project, but decided not to because the project uses a Contributor License Agreement (CLA), please consider opening an issue to inform them about the dangers of CLAs.
I was thinking about contributing to Jitsi Meet, but I noticed that they use a CLA, which prevents me from contributing to it, so I suggested to retire the CLA in favor of a Developer Certificate of Origin (DCO).

I was thinking specifically of the #xz Utils incident when I wrote this weeks column calling for an #opensource tax credit for developers.
“A 2024 Harvard study valued [open source software] at $8.8 trillion.
A software project may be initially undertaken by a single developer as a hobbyist project, but … maintenance and security updates require long-term commitments, often by an entire community of developers.”
The second maintenance release of the 24.02 series is out with performance optimizations when moving clips in the timeline and across multiple project bins, packaging improvements to macOS and Windows versions and fixes to copy/paste of effects, rotoscoping, Nvidia encoding among others.
Love free/open/libre software and its community? Come join us! We are looking for coordinators and general volunteers to help us keep and improve this great conference.
Has there ever been a concerted effort by the #FLOSS community to support universal basic income or guaranteed minimum income? Cuz if not, then I'd love to see it
if you are an #android user, do yourselves the favor of installing F-Droid, the #FLOSS and anti-surveillance app store. any apps that connect you to upstream surveillance services (like Google Search) are clearly marked as anti-privacy.
I'm doing my best to make my coverage of the xz backdoor accessible to laypeople while also providing the technical details engineers need. I'm also updating as new info becomes available. I hope it's helpful.,
@dangoodin
I think there needs to be more work amongst Linux distros and other libre software projects to identify libraries and other software that are critical (lots of things use xz) but need funding, as I suspect a lack of funding for the developer is at least partially responsible for setting the stage for the events that transpired.
So Serif made it official on Twitter and in e-mails to customers that they've been acquired by Canva, a cloud-based editor with a subscription pricing model.
Given the Affinity community's fervent love for the software came very heavily from its "buy once, own forever" business model in contrast to Adobe's go-fuck-yourself subscriptionware, this acquisition does not bode well for the long-term good will of the company and its products.
Serif says nothing will change. This has basically never been true even once in the history of acquisitions like this.
Enjoy the next year or so tops, before the "hard decisions" start coming out, and they announce they're "excited to transition" to a subscription model to keep number going up.
But hey, cheer up! There is nothing you love in this world that capitalism won't eventually destroy.
@SilverEagle There are points where people WILL start to collectively say “ENOUGH”. Tech is getting close.
There’s a kernel of truth to the “frog in a boiling pot” story, but it’s just that - a kernel. That doesn’t accurately tell the whole story. (And a frog will jump out well before it starts to boil.)
I’ve seen major strides in the past years with #FOSS/#FLOSS software like #Inkscape and #Blender. Looking at it that way, we may just have some good days ahead.
Well, this morning, I had no choice - @opensuse have switched Tumbleweed over to @kde#Plasma6.
What a difference a point-one release makes (main repo has 6.0.1). I did also finally take the plunge and switch to #Wayland end honestly, together they feel smooth, sharp, quick. Under X11, I always had to login with my external displays disconnected. No longer.
it is only if I play it with the build in phones. more often if the battery is low. it is by podcast, by signal audio messages, NewPipe videos… outside, when its cold it is also more often. when I charge it doesen’t happen....
my pixel 4 crashes if I play an audio
