Does Weird Al count? Because he is just as talented as any "serious" musician.

Also, The Presidents of the United States of America.

Tangentially related: if you see something that needs to be addressed now, like CSAM or gore, notify an instance admin via Matrix. That tool can send push notifications, so you're more likely to get a prompt response. Some instances also have public Matrix chats you can use.

You can find the Matrix account info for Lemmy users by clicking the "Send Secure Message" button in a user's profile.

[Meta] What do you think of migrating to c/map_enthusiasts@sopuli.xyz?

What do the users in this community think about possibly migrating over to !map_enthusiasts and locking this community? While there's nothing wrong with having multiple communities for a topic, I feel like a consolidated community would be more fun and possibly get more overall engagement. And !mapporn is clearly the quieter of...

Did the premise of an entity approaching you only when it's not being viewed originate with Doctor Who's Weeping Angels?

The Weeping Angels apparently originated with Steven Moffat seeing a statue of a weeping angel in a structure in a cemetery and returning later to find out it was gone. At least according to this RadioTimes article. They first appeared in 2007 in the episode Blink....

I think two issues have caused them to take baby steps here.
First, there was a big lawsuit between the Girl Scout of America and the Boy Scouts of America. The Boy Scouts wanted to open up to girls, and the Girl Scouts felt like their turf was being threatened. That took years to resolve.
Second, scouting has deep personal ties for some folks. People can get irrationally emotional about changes to the program, as if there's some sacred tradition at stake.

Where do the rural homeless near you live?

This seems to be something people don't always give second thought to. When people talk about the homeless, the first things thought about are images of people on busy city streets in rusty clothes waiting around near allies. In there, the answer is quite static, because it can be I guess. But if that's the case, change the...

Mostly in cars. The people that are marginally better-off have old RVs. The people who can't afford wheels will hide a tent in the bushes. Vehicle or not, everyone seeks out similar places where they are unlikely to be noticed or hassled: lightly-used dirt roads on public land, parking areas at trailheads, closed campgrounds, behind abandoned businesses on the edge of town, etc.

As much as I wish I could try an F2000 or AUG, I have no credible first-hand experience and can only parrot complaints that I have read on the Internet:

Ambidextrous use is more difficult when the ejection port is next to the shooter's face. It's not ideal for all your left-handed soldiers to have their weapons setup differently from all your right-handed soldiers. A workaround like the forward ejection on the F2000 is technically impressive, but complex.

All the controls - trigger, safety, bolt release, magazine release - are either operated by longer/more complex mechanisms or are tucked under the shooter's chin, farther away from the normal hand positions.

Putting the chamber close to the shooter's ear is nobody's idea of fun.

Lemmy is also finicky about federating certain actions between instances. If you watch the modlog you will sometimes see a user be banned, unbanned, and then immediately rebanned. That's a mod or admin trying to get content removal to federate out to other instances.

That happened in the case of the spammer here ~3 hours ago. Their content was removed from their home instance but it stayed up in this community. It's gone now, though.

Mantises live solitary lives, and are cannibalistic. I assume it's more out of indifference than hate, but it's close to what you're looking for.

I'm definitely interested in hear other people's opinions. Posting something in the Agora seems like a good idea. If nobody in this thread does it then maybe I'll put something up myself in a few days.

For now, @imaqtpie's suggestion is the way to go: PM one of us admins on a case-by-case basis and we'll help out.

In the long term, maybe we should set some criteria for identifying dead or unmodertaed communities and locking them? Our instance has hundreds communities, many of which are hardly used and likely abandoned by their creators. I made an effort some months ago to find active mods for the busiest communities, and remove communities with no assigned moderator. I'm not sure what to do with the rest of them, if anything. They aren't causing immediate problems. And confirming the activity status of every mod is one of those dull chores that has lingered at the bottom of my to-do list.

Jerry Manders, 5-Year-Old Prodigy Liar, Already Hailed as Future Political Star ( tattletaletimes.com )

There’s a up-and-coming political star that is making waves on the local level, 5-year-old Jerry Manders from Chicago, Illinois, has been identified as a lying prodigy with a skill set so advanced that he is already being hailed as a future star in American politics....

Sure, they have more bodies. They increased the maximum conscription age to 30 last year, and keep calling people up by the hundreds of thousands. But a large army is not necessarily a good army, especially if a substantial portion are conscripts.

These comments remind me of the Occupy Wall Street protests back in 2011. That movement also didn't lead to immediate law or policy changes at the national level, but it seems to have left a more subtle mark that is still with us. Income inequality has remained a hot topic, states have raised minimum wages, and UBI proposals are being discussed more seriously (at least in certain circles).

Anyone else notice a long delay for comments/posts from lemmy.world?

It might not just be lemmy.world, but several times recently I've made posts (usually to !helldivers2.lemmy.ca) that I check throughout the day. Then like 8 hours after I've made the post, I'll see comments appear from people on lemmy.world that are several hours old....

Some of the instance admins have been poking at this lagging federation issue for a few weeks now, trying to figure it out.

The Reddthat admin noticed that Lemmy's federation process can't seem to meet demand in some cases. Reddthat has had trouble staying current with lemmy.world due to the network latency between Europe and Australia: https://sh.itjust.works/comment/9807807. I understand that lemmy.nz has seen this, too.

Another thing that has been noticed is spamming of actions from kbin instances. It looks like some process gets stuck in a loop on the kbin side. https://lemmy.world/comment/8961882

I'm sure there are other contributing problems that still aren't well understood. This software is a work in progress, after all.

It feels like you're asking to go back to the late '90s. I clearly remember juggling plugins for Netscape Navigator and assigning MIME types to various apps. It was a mess. Modern integrated browsers are so much more predictable and user-friendly than the patchwork approach.

Life insurance companies could conceivably do this already. They sometimes ask for blood tests (among other exams) as a precondition of granting overage.

Looking at numbers from Yahoo Finance...
113.48M outstanding shares
DJT shares peaked at $79.38 last week, so $9B market cap.
Shares are at $47.60 right now, so $5.4B market cap.

$3.6B evaporated in a week.
And those valuations are for a company with quarterly revenue of <$1M and dropping.

Gullible "investors" got suckered, and are now losing their shorts. HODL all the way to the bottom.

Though even if it drops further, it's still a lucrative free money con for Trump. He didn't have to pay for the shares he's holding.
