Just discovered the concept of "small tech" / "small web" boosted by @laura and @aral :black_bloc_blob:

More interesting than "low tech" or "low web" fashion, powered by and for privacy, interoperability, inclusion with non-colonial nor non-commercial ideas.

Some fights and ideas picked from libre and ethical software movements, cool and mandatory nowadays :blobnomcookie:

How much vertical space does a letter occupy if the text-orientation is upright and the line-height is 1?

It's not 1lh as I would think. 😟

Boosts appreciated. 🙏

I was surprised to discover that the DigitalOcean apps platform, through its use of Cloudflare CDN, injects a JavaScript file into my HTML pages. The script is small and hides email addresses from address-scraping bots, so intentions are good, but I find it unacceptable for a hosting provider to modify my content at their discretion. I guess I'm getting old.

Looks like tiketmaster was mixing up users' accounts during the Yoasobi concert tix sale. I'm guessing it's some kind of session mix up? What web technology can fail that badly?

The last time that I had encountered it was a site using asp.net.

Anyone familiar with the web stack Ticketmaster runs on?

A bit ironic given this is disseminated over the Internet...

The Internet would be far better if giant corporations didn't control platforms & endlessly surveille & profile & do so very unequally--to me that largely is a capitalism, governance & regulatory failure--power & control of infrastructure.

Today I built a silly webpage by hand in a couple of hours. (I’m not going to tell you what it was, except that it was frivolous af.)

I started out by looking for a template, but everything I found was way too involved, so I ended up writing the HTML and CSS from scratch, throwing it in a cloud-hosted directory, and nudging the DNS settings to point there.

This turned out to be a ridiculously nostalgic experience. I built a lot of weird little websites like this when I was about eleven years old, saving the HTML of sites that I liked so that I could access them when the phone line was being used by someone else, and changing pieces around to figure out how it all fit together.

It struck me that:
a) by this measure I’ve been doing web dev for almost a quarter-century now 😳
b) there is nothing stopping me from making websites this way. I can still write HTML and yeet it out there if I want to, no matter what it’s for. Pages load quickly. It’s not fancy. It works. Underneath it all, the web is still there.

If you feel so inclined, I can highly recommend seizing an afternoon, taking a silly webpage idea, and having a play.

The great irony of the net's platformization is that platforms are intermediaries, and the promise of the internet that got so many of us excited was disintermediation - getting rid of the middlemen that act as gatekeepers between community members, creators and audiences, buyers and sellers, etc.
