@stgiga@youronlyone@youronlyone & talking about #Fedi history by the way, since the doc itself says it is a living doc, there are a few notable instances not yet mentioned there that were recently developed by high-profile (or at least notable enough for us) Fedi users & might have verifiable links or posts that can give them a place within the doc’s timeline:
• #Fedibird (#Mastodon fork) by @noellabo
• #Sharkey (a very popular #Misskey fork) by @Amelia (& others from the @Sharkey project) since 2023
• maybe #IceShrimp (#Firefish fork?), unsure if it’s notable enough for inclusion or if supported by verifiable links (even I don’t know who created it).
I leave it up to @youronlyone whether certain popular extensions (if not forks per se) like #GlitchSoc (extending Mastodon) & #Soapbox (extending or modifying #Pleroma) can be added to the timeline as well.
Also, I will definitely not suggest for inclusion (or even a footnote mention) a certain #Akkoma fork that was given an obscene name by a fringe group of people (let’s just pretend it never existed, OK?) :ablobcatknitsweats:
A lot of people have talked about the possibility of forking Mastodon to get the many improvements their communities need. Making such an effort successful is another discussion entirely.
@deadsuperhero There are several forks of Mastodon that have been around for years and work well (not only #Hometown) like #Ecko, #Glitchsoc, etc. for years.
They have many more functions such as editable character limit,
editable poll options, local posts, changeable favicon, markdown formatting - and if that's not enough, there is plenty of other software in the Fediverse for micro- and macroblogging
I occasionally log in here to keep it alive because this is historical and memorable for me. During this time, and before Mastodon was released, I was running my own Fediverse instance powered by #Hubzilla.
Back then, the protocol of the fediverse was #OStatus, work on #ActivityPub was still about to be started (IIRC).
Today, we have another federated protocol: #ATproto which is powering the #BlueSky network. (Or, is it ATproto network and BlueSky PDS?)
(PS. Max chars in Aleph.Land is 1024; and using the #GlitchSoc fork since it came out.)
Hello #Glitchsoc! I'm signing up on every fediverse site I can find to try all the different interfaces, features, and wacky combinations the open web has to offer. I'll probably be sharing my findings on WriteFreely or Plume after a while. I apologize in advance for any weirdness that may result from my experiments. 😅
Hello again #Fediverse, I may need your #fedihelp. So, here's a list of the Fediverse software I'm about to make temporary accounts for to test all the features and differences:
So, did I miss anything noteworthy? Does anyone have any tips or recommendations before I choose a server for any one of these? I'll probably be going for the most popular server on each for improved federation and maintenance.
Note: I'm using #Sharkey right now and Misskey forks are already overrepresented, so that's why it's not included.
I feel like this (#bug?) gets worse with every release. I really wish @Mastodon or #Glitchsoc would add a setting to disable "virtual scrolling" or wherever is causing this until it's fixed.
I have a sneaking suspicion that it might be related to long-toot collapsing. I've only noticed it on mobile so far. FWIW my default safari zoom is 75%.
Hallo Fediverse!
Insbesondere Friendica, Firefish und v.a.
Wenn Ihr also Anregungen oder Ergänzungen habt, gerne her damit! Danke!
Anyone know how to fix adding a website to your Home Screen on iOS then making you re login to that site every time instead of saving it? I think I had this problem with a Misskey instance before and I think I solved it but I forget how or if I really did lol. Currently happening with a glitch soc instance. #ios#mastodon#glitchsoc
Anyone using #glitchsoc nightly image builds? I've noticed latest is pretty stale but is that because they have a lot of bugs to work out still? #MastoAdmin
I just found a post where the media description doesn't federate into GlitchSoc. The original post has descriptive text, and it also has text when loaded into FireFish. But on glitch, the image has no alt text. Is this a known bug?
The Feditext iOS client for Mastodon, GotoSocial, Firefish, etc. now has its own account on fedi.software! Please follow us here for official Feditext updates and announcements.
okay, trying this one again. sorry for the double "please boost this post" spam. can you please boost this post so i can help get this server federated? i installed #glitchsoc and deleted my other instance, so that data is gone. would really appreciate it. thank you. :3
** GlitchSoc new features on tech.lgbt ** Oooo ... nice to see that we have a couple of useful new features: any weird looking posts in the next week may be me playing around with:
Comment: I do still love [#Calckey for it's migration of posting history and 'Antennae', but for now at least have realised I'll wait until mobile #Fedilab :android: App supports it fully - which is supposed to be coming. Fedilab is so feature-rich ...]
I've already boosted Jerry's pinned post before here but i want to take a quick moment and just put this out there for anyone interested in infosec / cybersecurity / security.
Infosec.exchange is awesome and @jerry rocks. If you are new here and are looking for a home away from one of the dev's instances, or are considering a change from something else you are on, it's a great instance and it's also running glitch-soc which gives it a bunch of cool features the vanilla Mastodon software most instances use don't have.
Also, if you do migrate, please if you can support this great instance!
Has anyone had any experience moving from mastodon/mastodon to glitch-soc/mastodon? I'm looking to do this as they document changes better, and the tweaks they have made allow for me to keep my instance up-to-date with my own tweaks and customization.
It looks straightforward, but since I have modified mastodon/mastodon, I want to be sure I move and make the same changes to my glitch-soc/mastodon fork as well.
There's an alternative version of Mastodon called "Mastodon Glitch Edition" (aka "glitch-soc" or just "Glitch"). Glitch is totally compatible with normal Mastodon, but adds experimental new features.
For example, Glitch instances let the admin alter the character limit, allow local posting, text formatting and lots of other stuff.
Many features in Glitch have eventually made their way into normal Mastodon after proving themselves stable and useful.
If you run your own Mastodon instance you can switch to Glitch, and switch back again if you don't like it.
(You may be wondering how this post is so long? It's because FediTips is on an instance that uses Glitch, and the instance character limit has been extended to 1000.)
